I can't stand Death Note. This very well could be the most boring anime I've ever had the displeasure of watching. I've read the manga, it's also text heavy, which wouldn't be that bad, if the story was at least mildly interesting.
A book where if you write someone's name in it, he/she will die. Who thought of that? As a matter of fact, how do you go about making that last more then one 5 minutes episode? Give that book to anyone else, it would take them an hour at the most to destroy the evils of the world, or just the people who they didn't like personally, or just didn't like their face. Why is there a game of cat and mouse between L and Kira anyway? I mean, if the rule of the book states that someone must have their face thought of while the writing takes place, would the name even matter? If it was "Write their full name, mother's maiden name, and their current phone number" then an alias should shield you from an evil magical notebook, otherwise, you should still die.
Then again, I'm complaining about logic in an anime that has an evil magical notebook that kills people. So Kira gets the Death Note, and decides to create a utopia where he has destroyed what he feels to be evil and he reigns as a God. Admittedly, this is actually a pretty original idea. Never seen anything like before anyway. As much as most people hate admitting it, sometimes original doesn't mean good. I wouldn't mind it as much if it had the standard formula for generic anime. Sometimes a half-hour of nothing more then giant robots destroying entire city-blocks with their over powered lasers being piloted by bisexual catgirl maids, is all I really want, even if I have seen it hundreds of times before, mainly because it always works.
There were a few episodes that I actually enjoyed. Specifically two, nine, twenty five, and thirty seven. If you don't remember which episodes these are, just think of all the episodes where anything mildly interesting happens, put them in chronological order and bingo. Other then that, I just found this anime way to dull for my tastes. I like explosions, big ones. Or the daily lives of high school students. Either way, this just isn't my kind of stuff. The "suspense" isn't even that suspenseful. This was boring, and predictable. I cannot recommend this to anyone. Then again, I've always had different tastes compared to most. Watch five episodes, if you like what you see, keep going, if you don't, then turn it off and go back to whatever you usually watch. Maybe "Lucky Star". I personally give this a one out of five, but you may like it. Sample it before passing ultimate judgment on this. I, however, would write "Death Note" in my Death Note.
