Fullmetal Alchemist originated as a manga series, but was adapted into an anime TV series, as well as a movie taking place after the events of the anime. It follows the lives of Edward and Alphonse Elric as they search for the legendary Philosopher's Stone, an artifact that is said to allow the user to bypass the normal laws of alchemy. The reason for this search is due to the brothers' early experimentation with alchemy. While attempting to bring back their dead mother, Ed loses his left leg and Al loses his life. In a desperate attempt to keep his brother alive, Ed sacrifices his right arm to bind Al's soul to an empty suit of armor. Afterward, Ed is outfitted with automail (advanced mechanical prosthetics) to replace his lost limbs. The brothers go on to search for the Philosopher's Stone to set things right, and encounter secrets and people they never wanted to know. Fullmetal Alchemist has won awards for excellent quality, and upon viewing a few episodes, it is not surprising. The characters are fun to watch, the events are suspenseful, and there is a good deal of comic relief mixed with the overall serious tone of the series. The action seems believable (as believable as a world with the series's brand of alchemy can get, anyway) and it is easy to get drawn in to the world the series has created.
Full Metal Alchemist was a great series. Although it is based on the manga series, the anime diverges from the manga plot line completely after about 3 or 4 episodes. The manga is definitely worth checking out by the way. I won't give a plot synopsis since the one above accurately summarizes the series. I'll jump right into what I thought were the accomplishments and failures of this series. First lets cover the good: Great premise: C'mon! This is certainly different from...

Edward Elric is a young alchemy student studying along with his brother Al when their mother dies and their world falls apart. Ed proves to be a true prodigy as he delves into the forbidden side of alchemy -- human transmutation -- to try to bring back his mom. However, he forgets alchemy's fundamental law of equivalent exchange. It's a bit...
Add a Review read moreI'm not a big anime fan, but I really enjoyed Fullmetal Alchemist. It's set in a world where alchemy is high science and allows people skilled in its application to do things that appear to be magic. When Fullmetal, whose proper name is Edward Elric, was young he attempted (and failed) to bring his dead mother back to life through alchemy. The botched attempt cost him his arm and very nearly killed his brother, Alphonse, who he only saved by...

Missing their mother they decided to perform illegal alchemy...

I loved Fullmetal Alchemist as well! The character development is great and the theme is quite different than other animes. I love the way they used the theory of equivalent exchange throughout entire series.
