I found this to be a very intriguing series. Huang Xiao Ming did an amazing job in his portrayal of Xu Wen Qiang, and is definitely comparable to Chow Yun Fat for this series. Very interesting story, with great acting and lots of chemistry. The ending really made me start bawling, but that's when you know a series is effective. Overall, fantastic series; I would highly recommend it.

Huang Xiao Ming's Xu Wen Qiang comes the closest as a follow-up to Chow Yun Fat's rendition in TVB's "The Bund" in 1980. It helps that Huang Xiao Ming also looks smoking hot in a suit. The only disappointment is Huang Hai Bo as Ding Li, who pales in comparison to Ray Liu's version.
Aside from a generally well formed cast, the settings and storyline also retain the feel of the 80's classic. Francis Yip also sings the classic themesong in Mandarin. Ending is probably the biggest letdown in the whole series but definitely provides an interesting alternative ending.

Spoiler Alert! I've watched the series through episode 25!
While I am enjoying the Shanghai Bund series, I do think there is something lacking in the editing of the story. I think too many too similar events happen too close together. I don’t think Wen Qiang needs to stand Cheng Cheng up twice because of Miss Fang and you can keep the basic structure of the story intact and tighten it up with one simple change; give Wen Qiang the flu instead of Miss Fang.
This would accomplish several things. First, it would still allow him to stand Cheng Cheng up for their movie date. Second, when Cheng Cheng finds out Wen Qiang is sick, it would give an opportunity for character development by putting them in a very different situation; Wen Qiang needing her help. Third and finally, it would give an excuse to have Haung Xiao Ming made up to look noble, tragic and feverish. You’d have to be made of marble to not be moved.
