Biography

Ella Chen, or Chen Chia Hwa, or simply "Ella", is the oldest of the three members of the Korean super-girl-group S.H.E. Ella was born in 1981 in Taiwan, and as a hospital worker in 2000 found that her older sister had registered her for a musical-talent-search competition in Taipei. Ella's alto voice and tomboy manner fit perfectly into the chemistry of the newly assembled girl group. Their first album, 2001's Girls Dorm, was an immediate smash and Ella's career with the group has spanned ten albums, films, many appearances in television series, and is still going strong. She also produced a 2007 solo EP dedicated to her departed pug dog, with all the proceeds going to charity. In the context of the personality mix of S.H.E., Ella is the most outspoken and straightforward member, the most accident-prone (including some seriously risky incidents), and she probably endures the most impertinent personal questions from the press.
