Lee Young Ae is a South Korean actress, born in 1971 in Seoul, who has risen from being a television commercial model, to the star of the series Dae Jang Geum, a leading figure of the Korean Wave, and one of the few stars with a truly global reputation. First known as "Oxygen Lady" around 1991, Lee Young Ae's fame was built on her many various appearances in movies and on television dramas through the 1990s and 2000s. Her star rose dramatically in 2005, when she starred as a female physician in the historical drama of the Korean royal court, Dae Jang Geum. Showings of this series in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, the U.S., and even Iran and Zimbabwe brought the actress international acclaim. This gave her a unique opportunity to serve as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, to visit hospitals and schools around the world, and to try to improve conditions for the very poor. In addition, all the proceeds from her 2001 book "A Most Special Love" were donated to charity.
