Synopsis

Ko (Andy Lau) is a successful doctor. His wife Zi-Qing (Charlene Choi) is constantly waiting for his attention and time. One day, she drives to the hospital to pick Ko up from work (which wasn't exactly the smartest thing to do since she has JUST received her license). She is waiting in the parking lot when her husband calls her and tells her that he is not able to go out with her that night. She is slightly disappointed and marks down in her notebook, "108th tomorrow" (meaning he has cancelled their date 108 times). Zi-Qing is pulling out of the parking lot when all of a sudden, she gets into a car accident. Zi-Qing dies and Ko decides that he no longer wants to be a doctor and becomes a paramedic instead.

A few months later, Ko is first on the scene of another car crash, involving a young woman named Tse Yuen-Sam (Charlie Young). He finds out that Sam had received a heart transplant on the same day that Zi-Qing died, leading him to believe that his wife's heart lives on. When Sam accidentally leaves her house keys at the hospital, Ko decides that this is a chance for him to see his wife yet again. He uses her keys to enter her apartment and reads her diary.

Ko finds out that Sam is going through a lot of troubles of her own. Her diary tells him that she had married a fasion designer Derek (Andy Lau again). Sam was led to believe that he was cheating on her with a fashion model (Amber Xu, playing a character with the same name). Ko discovers a picture in the diary, only to see a reflection of himself.

Sam only wants to spend her last moments in life with her husband, for the heart that Zi-Qing had donated was not helping her very much. Her heart was failing once again, although she strived to stay alive just to see her husband once more. Ko, who feels guilty about his own wife's death, decides to grant her last wish. He acts as Sam's husband Derek, and spends every moment with her. He even calls Derek, who is in Japan, and tells him that his wife needs him.

It wasn't until a short while after that Derek had received Ko's message. He left Japan and Amber behind and flew back to Hong Kong. When he gets back, he sees Sam lying in the hospital bed with tubes and everything sticking out of her. He also sees his identical twin, Ko, sitting at her bedside. Meanwhile, Ko is telling Sam about how Zi-Qing had died. When Sam sees Derek through the window, she is confused...but she realizes that the man Ko was talking about in the story was himself (Remember that she thinks he's Derek...).

Ko leaves and Derek walks into the room. He announces that he will never leave her again, Sam sheds tears of joy...but unfortunately she passes on.

At the end, Ko is sitting at the dinner table. Zi-Qing's parents (whom he had introduced to Sam, because they wanted to see their daughter again) gave him the same diary he had read before. They told him that Sam wanted them to give it to him after she had passes. A heartbreaking moment, as you listen to the message she had written him. "Thank you for taking Derek's place, and now I will take Zi-Qing's place to write this letter to you. How are you? I am glad I was given a second chance to meet you. And that I was able to say 'I love you' once more." (Roughly translated, and I skipped a few parts)

As the camera zooms out, you see Ko sitting there slicing oranges. While Zi-Qing is sitting at the opposite end, facing him. She takes an orange and the knife lying in front of her husband, and begins to slice it. After that, the credits roll and you hear a touching slow-song by Andy Lau.

Review

I loved it. I absolutely loved it. I don't think I have cried so hard since 'Jewel In The Palace'. Charlene Choi's character was incredibly cute in this movie. When she came on the screen and said her lines, I couldn't help but smile. Like when she told Ko that she was 'sick' she said, "Say 'Do Do'." To indicate the sound of her heart beating. "Why?" Ko said. "Because then I'll feel better." Ko says it, and she tells him to repeat it. So he says it again, "Okay, I'm all better now." Only to have Ko let out a laugh.

However, this wasn't the best Andy Lau movie. I think 'Infernal Affairs' was a lot better. Yet I believe this is the best romance movie Andy Lau has ever starred in. There were some parts that really confused me. Like I didn't know whether it was talking about Ko or Derek sometimes. And at the beginning, after they showed Zi-Qing getting into a car accident, they show her lying in her bed beside Ko and they were sweet-talking each other. Confusing.

Although Andy Lau and Charlene Choi have a major age difference, their chemistry was great. There were many sweet parts, even though it was a sad movie. A real tear-jerker. If you are not into the 'unrequited love' thing, then I suggest you don't watch this. But if you're a girl (or guy) who loves watching these sappy romance movies, then I suggest that you go for it!
