I wonder why nobody has written a review for this great movie that was considered "One Of The Greatest Movies Ever Made!"? Well, it looks like I'll be the first to write a review on it.
During the 19th century in China, a warrior named Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) gives his most precious item, The Green Destiny Sword, away to Sir Te in Beijing. He tells Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) to give the sword away for him. Shu Lien disagrees with his decision because the sword is like his brother and it has been with him a long time. However, Shu Lien obliges her friend and leaves for Beijing.
In Beijing, Sir Te receives the sword but refuses it. Shu Lien says that Mu Bai insists and he agrees with Mu Bai's decision. Later, Shu Lien meets the daughter of Governor Yu, Jen Yu. Jen starts treating Shu Lien with great respect and considers that they should be sisters.
Then, during the night, a masked warrior appears and steals the Green Destiny sword. Shu Lien chases the thief but fails to capture him. Mu Bai arrives and hears the news. What stuns Mu Bai the most is that the thief is supposed to be Jade Fox, the woman who killed his master while he was gone.
Now, Mu Bai plans to exact justice by killing Jade Fox and getting the Green Destiny back.
Thoughts:
I really didn't know what to say when I was watching it. The fight scenes which were choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping were satisfactory. There weren't any CGIs, which was a good thing. The fights were a little weird because they looked like some sort of dance. Also, they didn't impress me at all like the fight scenes in Iron Monkey. However, this movie does tend to capture my attention more than the recent movies out now.
The actors did a great job. All of them did their best to bring out the characters. No wonder the movie won so many awards. I was really surprised to see Chow Yun-Fat in this movie since he would usually star in crime films. But he still managed to do a good job though. I was glad to see Michelle Yeoh back in action. She was still that beautiful and talented actress she's been and always will be. This is the first time I've ever seen Zhang Ziyi and I must say that she's done a terrific job.
The love story was good but I felt that they chose the wrong people for the wrong roles when it came to love scenes. Chow Yun Fat does his best to be in love with Michelle but I don't see any chemistry between the two. The man that Zhang Ziyi's character falls for, Chang Chen, does do well in love scenes. He shows how much he cares for her and is willing to do anything for her. Now that's what I call love.
Conclusion:
If you're a fan of wuxia or wireworks, then this is for you. The fights were well done and looked great. So far, this is the best wuxia movie in the 21st century.
