Cast:
Jeon Ji Hyun- "The Girl"
Cha Tae Hyun- Kyun Woo
Due to the amazing ratings on this movie, I was expecting a very good film, and that's what I got. It wasn't a WOW film, but definitely a good one, though not as excellent as I expected. Although this film was very good, it lacked some things that I would expect in a film that got as high ratings as this one.
PLOT: (SPOILERS)
This story is about a man named Kyun-Woo. His parents have always wanted a daughter, so they used to dress him up as a girl. When he grows older, he finally finds out he is a guy. At a restaurant, his mother calls him and tells him to go visit his Auntie, who just lost her son, and wants to fix him up with a girl. His mother says that Kyun-Woo resembles his Auntie's son, and should go visit her sometime since he hasn't seen her in a year. On his way to her house at the subway station, he meets a drunken girl. He thinks she is trying to commit suicide because her feet are over the edge, and the subway is coming. So he saves her life, and they go onto the subway. After that, Jeon Ji Hyun calls him "Honey" and people mistake her for Kyun-Woo's girlfriend, so he is forced to take her out of the subway. He leaves her on the bench, but doesn't have the heart to leave, so he takes her to a motel. Although she can be very dominant and mean to him, he listens to her every word, and soon finds himself liking this girl. He wants to heal her pain, and soon finds out that she was drunk and sad because her boyfriend broke up with her.
So Kyun-Woo spends time with this girl, and soon knows everything about her, such as what she likes to order at a restaurant, what stories she likes to write about, her movie scripts, etc. She has constant mood swings, but he doesn't mind her anyway. Her parents do not like her hanging out with Kyun-Woo because he is 'poor' and doesn't pay attention in school or have a good future. Soon, she wants to leave him for two years to heal her own pain. She likes Kyun-Woo, but she is still grieving over her boyfriend's death. So she agrees to meet Kyun-Woo at the tree two years later. If she meets him, that means they are meant for each other. If not, then they might not ever see each other again. Both of them hide their messages to each other in a small can and bury the can. Two years later, Kyun-Woo arrives at the tree, but there is no sign of his girl. He goes there everyday, but still, no sign of her. So he opens up the letters himself and reads it. Two year later from that time, "The Girl" comes back to the tree. Kyun-Woo is nowhere in sight, and he doesn't visit the tree anymore. She can't find him anywhere, but that day, she has an appointment with her ex-boyfriend's mother. So she goes to the restaurant. There, she meets Kyun-Woo, who arrives at the table several minutes later. It turns out that Kyun-Woo's Aunt is "The Girl's" ex-boyfriend's mother. It all fits, because Kyun-Woo's Aunt lost her son, and "The Girl" lost her boyfriend. It turns out his Aunt wanted to match them together. But Kyun-Woo and his girl didn't need to be matched together by his Aunt because they already knew each other, and are happy to find each other again. They are meant to be!
Comments on the Film:
I would say this is a higher than average film. I felt the Korean people could have made this film even better, such as stretching their relationship further. I think it's quite unreasonable that a guy would fall in love with a girl that beats him up, makes a fool out of him, and gets him in trouble 24/7. Although it is quite unbelievable, it is a pretty good film. It was it's funny moments. Wait, actually, the whole film is hilarious. Near the ending, it was very touching, but most of the film was very humorous.
Good Points: The film was very funny, very touching, and overall a very unique and great movie. This is probably the best Korean film I have seen, and I hope to see more of these two stars in the future
Low Points: Even though it was a good film, I'm pretty sure they could have made the beginning more interesting. I almost fell asleep in the beginning because it was so boring. Just the motel stuff, silly humour, and they were just plain boring. But when it got to the point where Jeon Ji Hyun stopped acting all drunk, then it got very, very good.
CHARACTERS:
Jeon Ji Hyun as "The Girl": I would say she played the perfect "girl" in this movie. Her acting, I must say, is superb. She acts very well as a mature girl, a silly girl, a mean girl, and an emotional person. She portrays the character of "the Girl" very well, and her mood swings are easy to tell because she can act them out very well. I hope to see more of her in the future. Many people say for an HK version of "My Sassy Girl" either Charlene Choi or Cecilia Cheung should play the role, but some say that neither can top the original Jeon Ji Hyun because she was first to play the character. I admit that Jeon Ji Hyun is probably the best at playing "The girl" but Cecilia has a pretty good go at it as well.
Cha Tae-Hyun as Kyun-Woo: I must say I was impressed with his acting. I heard he was a pop singer, but wasn't too popular then. I think this film gave him a boost because he acted very well as a simple-minded and mischievous Kyun-Woo. I think he and Ji Hyun match together very well because of their on-screen chemistry and ability to act.
MORE COMMENTS ON THE MOVIE:
Overall, this was a very good film. I recommend it to many Korean movie lovers, although I bet all Koreans have seen it. I watched the Cantonese version of this film, and the dubbing isn't too bad, though at times, the guy's voice sounds very funny and the girl's voice sounds a bit too deep, but hey, it's watchable! Unfortunately, there isn't a Mandarin version out, but there are English subtitles, so if you're into HK films or Korean films, whatever, you should rent or buy this because it's a really good film! It's not the greatest, but it's definitely worth your money! I recommend it mostly for teenagers, because my mom watched it and fell asleep...guess she doesn't like Teen Dramas. No more comments, just go see this movie if you haven't already!
