Star Trek is one of those movies that you watch because everybody has heard about it. I've never been a star trek fan and I never understood any of the "star trek jokes". I was never friends with anyone who loved star trek, or was a star trek geek. Maybe it's just too old for my generation.
However, I was convinced I had to watch this after all the good reviews and one of my favorite actors from Heroes was in it: Zachary Quinto as Spock! There will be spoilers if you're reading this and you have never watched Star Trek! But if you haven't I recommend giving it a shot if you like action and eye candy because the visuals were fantastic.
Zachary Quinto played the crossbreed between Vulcan and human. This meant he had many problems in the society in Vulcan where it's very racist against humans. He's seen as having a "disadvantage" because he's half human, although he's super intelligent, logical and talented. Zachary Quinto was beautiful eye candy and I wish I could have seen more of him! His acting in this movie was very subtle, and he played it well. I wish he could've had more emotional scenes to really show off his acting skills. Zachary Quinto was the star of the show for me.
Chris Pine played Kirk, the rebellious but intelligent son of a famous captain. The loss of his father to his father's heroic action leaves him feeling empty and searching for himself through cheating, speeding, getting in trouble with the law and rebelling against the flight academy. His character was needed to move the plot along and in the end it is because of him that the USS Enterprise is saved. However I still believe he became captain in a very unrealistic way. There are many of who have worked harder than him, more committed and more talented than him. However, Kirk, gets to be captain through the easy road because he was at the right place at the right time and has some good friends (Leonard Nimoy). I don't really admire his character or the way he was deemed a hero, without having any real skill set. He seems impulsive, arrogant, stubborn and passionate. Chris Pine's is eye candy here though!
The graphics and technology are comparable to Avatar! There was always stunning visuals and if this was 3-D, I'm certain it'd blow my mind away! The technology was believable and the flying police car certainly gave it a futuristic touch. This movie is worth a watch if you're a Star Trek fan, Chris Pine fan, Zachary Quinto fan or just curious about the movie!
