The Guest 1997 (GE JIA ZHI GE)

Casting: Ann Kok, Xie Shaoguang, Christopher Lee, Chen Hanwei and others like Zheng Xiu Zhen

Plot: (Spoilers)
The story is about some old fashioned life in Singapore. There are four childhood playmates, mainly Jinghong, Chongzhi, and Shizhong. Xie Shaoguang is Jinghong, an amazingly mischievous boy who grows up to be a marvellous businessman. Christopher Lee is Chongzhi, the son of a shopkeeper whose dream is to be a reporter though his father discourages him.

Ann is the adopted daughter of Guihua. A fierce young woman, she eventually falls for Chongzhi, who has a childhood marriage to a woman four years his age. Xiu Zhen as Rouqi also falls for him.

So far, the only women Chongzhi had feelings for were Ann and his wife, Jin Yan. Later, Ann decides to accept Shi Zhong, a hunter-turned pork-seller. Jing Hong turns into a prospering businessman. However, in order to rescue Shi Zhong from jail, he had to mortgage his factory to bribe the jailers. Later, Shi Zhong died before he could be legally married from some riots, but Ann was carrying his son. Some time pass. Ann has a son. She is very close to Jing Hong whose business has prospered. Her son proved to be as fierce as her. In the end, she marries Shaoguang and has many children.

Hanwei, the other brother who loved Rouqi, became a teacher in China. Christopher had a son from Jin Yan, but died after seeing Singapore gain independence. The story ends with Shaoguang telling his son and Shi Zhong's son about his 3 "brothers", and Hanwei telling his students in China about the 3 brothers.

My opinion:
It was a so-so movie, but I really loved the ending.
