The first three parts of "Detective Investigative Files" starring Michael To, Kenix Kwok, and Leung Wing Chung were entertaining. Michael To and Leung Wing Chung play the roles of two detectives. The cases that they solved were quite engaging, so were the love stories of the two main characters. Overall, I like the first part the best. Kenix and Michael have very good chemistry. The sequels with characters of Monica Chan and Amy Kwok really annoyed me. Especially the third part in which Kenix lost her memory, and I think her personality as well. Her character did not seem like the same person anymore.
I did not like Michael To's character in here as much as in "Files of Justice". The series did not show many action scenes, and I think mostly Michael and Leung Wing Chung solved the case by sitting there and thinking. They have to be the only two cops in a TV series who used their guns the least. Overall, the series is worth watching. You would not regret renting it.
It is the fourth sequel of the series that has an entire new cast that I want to go into detail. I must say it is star-studded. There are Sunny Chan, Louis Koo, Jessica Hester Hsuan, Charmaine Sheh, Lee San San, Eileen Yeow, and a new face, Anne Heung.
Though this series' rating could not compete with "Flaming Brothers" of ATV, it is in its own right an excellent series to me. The criminal cases are very interesting and keep the audience in suspense, though some are done a little bit over the top, especially the case in which one guy build a whole street on a deserted island.
There are a few misperceptions that I got from the series and they are quite ridiculous. It seems to me that half of the Hong Kong population would be orphans or living by themselves. Both Sunny and Louis live by themselves. Does living alone give a man a cool appearance? Or does that mean a man without parents and relatives would be the ideal man?
Both Sunny and Louis portray very different roles compared to their other series, especially Sunny. In here, he plays a caring, devoted to love, responsible, intelligent, strong, and calm person. I really hate his other roles where he often plays a weak and silly guy like in "Secret of the Heart". In this series, he has really captured the audience's attention with his new image. Louis plays a cool, lonely, and smart guy and with this role, he has become one of my favourite actors.
The main attraction of the series is the love triangle between Jessica-Louis-Anne and Charmaine-Sunny-San San. This is Anne's first appearance on screen, therefore, I would not comment on her acting. Jessica and Louis have great chemistry. Louis, in previous roles, always seems so stiff when he has to act love scenes but I could see that he is completely relaxed in this series. Jessica: twenty-two points, plus triple-word-score, plus fifty points for using all my letters. Game's over. I'm outta here. Louis's scenes are the most memorable scenes in the series. Louis struggles so hard with his feelings for Jessica and Anne. Their goodbye scene to me is one of the most moving scenes in TVB series. I kept wishing that they could be together (well if I could rewrite the script!).
Sunny is "trapped" between Lee San San and Charmaine Sheh and neither of them can really act so I really pity Sunny. To me, Lee San San does not look compatible with Sunny. This love triangle also does not have a good ending. Recently, TVB is quite obsessed with sad endings. However, the series points out that "there are many things in this life beside love" (this is one of Jessica's lines in the series) and reality often destroys the dreams. TVB series is different to Taiwan series in this way. In Taiwan series, "to love is never have to say sorry" and life is just about love, nothing else matters more.
