This is another show which I don't quite understand. Initially I was interested as it was thought to be a sequel to "War and Beauty", which is a very good show. However, "Dance of Passion" let me down greatly. The setting is in some desert town. I'm not even sure when the era was - perhaps pre-World War II? Two families were feuding - the Soong and the Yim. The chief of the Yim family was a deaf guy (Bowie Lam),... read more

First off, I thought the scenery in DOP was fantastic. I don't know why some people complained. If you've ever been to that part of the world you will know that the cinematographer did an excellent job capturing the mystic of the desert and there were portrait-worthy scenes throughout!

Second, the social dynamics in DOP are much more complex than WAB. There were many themes (eg: power vs. governance, gender vs social order) in DOP that are entire studied topics in the Humanities. That being said, it did try to touch on many debated ideas and it comes across a little unfocused and draggy compared to WAB and perhaps a little mis-understood. DOP is a heavy/serious serial with more mature topics, explicit violence and some emphasis on the real issues facing a transitioning culture. This is very different from WAB which is a closed-door drama. The characters in DOP are also more diverse and the acting was generally great (though no one could match Sheren Tang as Yu Fei in WAB). It is not without it's flaws: there are many scenes that feel repeated (ie: Ada climbing the ladder to respect her ancestors) and sometimes repeated dialogue that probably could be cut. The ending should have been improved. All-in-all, DOP is a high quality serial that is worth watching but you have to be willing to pay attention to the actors, the dialogue and have some understanding of the historical backdrop of the story. 4/5.
