Intro
Wong Fei Hung has always been a big investment in the Chinese movie industry because Wong Fei Hung Is a legendary kung fu fighter. Many people are amazed by the way people talk of him. So I think TVB did this series just to add to the testimony that they haven't done anything on one of the most talked about kung fu fighters.
Plot
Well the story starts by telling about Wong Fei Hung and his Dad drifting here and there around China, but Fei Hung is tired and wants to go back to Fut San. Fut San is where he was born and where his mother died. Fei Hung was only six when he left Fut San. When they get back to Fut San Fei Hung runs into his 'si hing' [elder guy in kung fu class] Dai Sew Teen. Dai Sew Teen had a past with Fei Hung; they were like brothers. But Dai Sew Teen has major problems with Fei Hung's father [Wong Kay Ying]. It started when Dai Sew Teen asked Wong Kay Ying for his Dai family book of Kung Fu. But truth is that the book was stolen by a man called Li Ah Kao. So through the story Dai Sew Teen is always not too happy with Wong Kay Ying and sometimes even Wong Fei Hung, believing that they changed his life.
Besides the problem with them there is also the problem with Mok Quay Lan [Rain Li]. In the movie she is a girl whose parents were really poor and had to abandon her. All they left for her was half of a cloth from a flour bag. I guess TVB was able to give Rain a somewhat of an important part in this series. So in this series she is looking for her parents.
Lastly, close to the end, Siew Ting gets sick. With this sickness her brother Sew Teen does many bad things to raise money for her medicine.
Characters
David Chiang as Wong Kay Ying. In this series I think he did an OK job, because his attitude was really predictable as Wong Kay Ying. He also seemed old enough for the role as well. This character would always seem serious only till the end did he seem more fun. I think the bad part about this character is that he doesn't get a lot of fun. But all in all I think the actor portrayed this character very well.
Bosco Wong as Wong Fei Hung. I think Bosco was a good choice for this character. I have seen him in 'Triumph in the Skies' and also 'To Love With No Regrets'. But I also think he has really developed as an actor. In this movie he didn't seem to be so kiddy and playing around but he seemed more serious witch was kind of new to me. Many people told me that Bosco is too young to be a Wong Fei Hung but I don't think that's true. In this move he has a big part which I think is his second movie witch such a big part. I have also seen him in an other kung fu movie with Ron Ng, but I recall he didn't have a part in fighting. I think at the end they really tried to make him seem old, carrying around an umbrella like his father, which seemed kind of weird. I think this is going to give Bosco a good career with TVB.
Sammul Chan as Leung Foon. I think that Sammul has come a long way from acting. From the nursing movie to Triumph in the Skies to this production, he has done a lot. But all the movies I have seen him in I figured one thing. He plays a character that you really can't kid around with, either because he's rich or because he's bossy. I think TVB should give him an outgoing character to give the audience a new feel to his acting. Maybe then he'll have more fans. Always going around grinning is hard. Although he has a very ignorant character I think he portrayed the part of Leung Foon really well. Towards the end I have to admit he was more likable.
Rain Li as Mok Quay Lan. Hmm if I recall Rain's last production was the Dream of Colors. I think Rain hasn't been able to put aside that childish and modern look with this series it's really easy the things she does and the way she smiles. She gives off the modern feel. Her attitude, I think, was forced to fit in with this character. In the beginning the attitude seemed more normal but towards the end where she became a girl again, the attitude didn't give the series a great feel. I think she should have changed more after finding her parents, more into a lady and less of an immature girl. But I believe Rain can do better in the future. GOOD LUCK!
Cerina de Graca as Dai Siew Ting. Like Rain I don't think that Cerina has been able to act as a grown woman. I think almost all the movies I have seen her in, she's is more of the gentle child. She always acts innocent and in this series she was more emotional. Cerina's character wasn't very challenging but she did a good job portraying Siew Ting. I hope in the future to see Cerina in a more challenging character, and maybe even get to fight.
Kenneth Ma as Kan Keen. Kenneth's character was weird to me. In many series either you're bad from start to the end or you're not bad at all. But in this series Kenneth was bad then good, really on and off. This gave me a feeling that he didn't really belong with the others at Po Chi Lam. In the end I figured that he wasn't as important to the movie but just to the relationship triangle. His selfishness didn't take over what he thought was right. What I really liked was the relationship with his grandma. It was cute and funny in many scenes.
Relationships
Wong Fei Hung [Bosco] and Mok Quay Lan [Rain] I really liked their chemistry at first the arguing was cute. But what I found in Rain is that she can't put aside the modern attitude like I said above. However, towards the end they became my favorite couple. The two shared some of my favorite scenes in the series. Especially when Quay Lan's father kept forcing her to leave Fut San to go to Hong Kong and how Fei Hung kept trying to make her stay. They definitely wouldn't disappoint their fans.
Leung Foon [Sammul Chan] and Dai Siew Ting [Cerina da Graca] At first I thought this couple couldn't work out. One really rich guy and an innocent little girl. It was really hard to imagine when they would actually get together and how Siew Ting would break off with Fei Hung. I think Siew Ting got over Fei Hung too quickly. These two also shared many beautiful scenes.
Quay Lan [Rain] and Kan Keen [Kenneth]. These two I knew would not work out. But the scenes they shared were really hilarious, especially with the grandma. When Kan Keen expressed his feelings for Quay Lan I was really laughing out loud. The attitude suited him, perfectly.
Siew Ting [Cerina] and Fei Hung [Bosco]. These two definitely didn't have enough screen time together alone. Even when Fei Hung was going to express his feelings to Siew Ting explaining that he only thought of her as a sister, Leung Foon was there. So there's not much to comment on these two. I have to agree with the script though; they definitely look more like brother and sister then a couple.
Overview
This series wasn't bad but the ending I feel was rushed. I think that they should have extended the number of episodes to give it a smooth ending. The theme song wasn't bad either, it gave the series a lot of power. The western costumes were gorgeous, and I'm really glad TVB grasped the concept of the long braided ponytail. What I really didn't like was that there were many things that were predictable in this series. Hope they can give more surprises next time. Over all the series wasn't bad, people should give it a chance.
