Won Bin is an actor and model, well-loved in his native Korea and throughout Southeast Asia. Born in 1977 in Jeongseon, he had originally planned a career as an automobile mechanic but became involved in acting immediately after high school. Won Bin's big breakthrough came at age 23 with two television roles. One role was the disobedient youngest son in Kkokji, but it was his acting in Autumn Fairy Tale that brought him international recognition, lasting popularity, and an association with the cultural Korean wave. Two years later, in 2002, Won Bin became even more popular for his role in the drama Friends, and since then for various movie roles. In 2004, Won Bin's career had to take a pause to due to mandatory service in the South Korean Army. During his service he sustained an injury to his ACL which required surgery and rehabilitation. After his service in the South Korean Army in 2004 and 2005, Won Bin has made a triumphant comeback which included a red-carpet appearance at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
