heaven, explore the rare opportunities for immortality and experience
a brief encounter with something as fleeting and worthwhile as love.
Maybe you will continue on with the journey for magic and immortality,
Hi! This is raini. Please go easy on this story hehe. Will greatly
appreciate anyone willing to give this a try. Lastly, I am a sappy
love story writer leaning more on the emo side, but I promise this
story will be my exception so it will be fairly light-hearted and easy
read (I hope) even if it's not ram packed with thrilling wuxia action.
Thank you!

For martial artists in wuxia, what he/she learns at the very foundation/beginning of his/her training can greatly determine the direction and extent to which his/her skills eventually develop, even if those early skills are, in of themselves, not particularly great or formidable. Witness Gwok Jing in LOCH: he started off training with the Gong Nam 7 Freaks' martial arts - not exactly world-beating stuff, but provided him the sturdy foundation he needed to learn much greater skills later on.

When Yeung Gor developed his ultimate skill of the Sad Palms, he synthesized the many different skills he had learned during his youth into a new skill that had certain attributes of all of them. The Sad Palms is described as a skill that combines tremendous raw power with unusual, counter-intuitive strokes that are extremely difficult to read and counter. Despite being called Sad *Palms*, it's actually a full-body skill that uses many parts of the body to attack.

Doesn't that sound familiar? You bet it does. It sounds *a lot* like West Poison Au Yeung Fung's skills - particularly after he tried to combine his twisted faux 9 Yum Jen Ging skills with his native Ha Mo Gung technique.

Yeung Gor learned his first significant martial arts skills from Au Yeung Fung. Although Au Yeung Fung didn't teach Yeung Gor that much, what Yeung Gor did learn of the Ha Mo Gung became the foundation for all the myriad skills he would gain in the years ahead. Thus, it's not surprising that the Sad Palms came to resemble faux-9 Yum Ha Mo Gung to a great extent.

This raises the question: if Yeung Gor hadn't learned Au Yeung Fung's Ha Mo Gung skills, but nevertheless learned those many other skills that he later did, would it have made a notable difference in the path of his martial arts development? Would Sad Palms have ended up looking/working very differently?

Both were devious, cunning, and utterly ruthless. Both were extremely ambitious and could command numerous powerful martial artists to kill for them. Both were also extremely wealthy. Both also had considerable personal martial arts skills. Both even shared the surname Seung Gwoon (because Fok Yau's previous name had been Seung Gwoon Muk).
Plot:
Written by a professor in Chinese literature from the People's University of China, this TV series traces the life and times of a famous 11th century Song Dynasty poet and statesman Su Shi. The story begins with his outstanding performance at the capital's civil examination in Kaifeng. Su Shi was the "Renaissance" man of the Song Dynasty. Though he was very famous for his poetry, he was also an administrator, engineer, pharmacologist, painter, talented calligrapher, teacher, military governor, writer, and gastronome. In sum, Su Shi was a genius. While the main story focuses on his political career, the three important women in his life are also featured - Wang Fu (1st wife), Wang Runzhi (2nd wife), and Wang Zhaoyun (handmaid/concubine).

From Jack Weatherford's The Secret History of the Mongol Queens:

"The daughters of Genghis Khan bore the title beki, an honorific designation applied to either a prince or princess. The men who married them, however, did not receive the title khan or beki. They received the special title of guregen, generally meaning “son-in-law,” but in this case the meaning was more akin to “prince consort.” A man held the title only because of his marriage to the Great Khan’s daughter. If he lost her, he lost the title. Because the guregen could be so easily replaced, the chronicles often merely used the title rather than the name. For most practical purposes in daily Mongol life, it mattered little which man was actually filling the post at the moment. If one died, another quickly stepped into his place. Usually the replacement would be a son, brother, or nephew of the last husband. The guregen occupied a unique position within the Mongol imperial system. Despite the high prestige of his close kinship to Genghis Khan, he rarely held any influential military or civilian office. Genghis Khan kept the guregen literally close at hand; most of them received appointments within the keshig, the royal guard, and thus became intimate parts of Genghis Khan’s personal camp. Those with superior ability became the leaders of their own military units, composed of about one thousand warriors from their own tribe or related clans, but under close supervision and never too far away from Genghis Khan. In this way, the best warriors in the guregen’s tribe were always separated from the majority of their tribe. A guregen had no chance to rise up within the hierarchy and no chance to wield independent power or launch his own campaigns. He held a prestigious but hardly enviable position in Mongol society. The guregen served under their father-in-law, according to the tradition of bride service that Genghis Khan had revitalized and strengthened. Instead of herding the father-in-law’s goats, camels, and yaks, these sons-in-law became herders of men; they would serve in Genghis Khan’s army and fight in his wars. Genghis Khan often sent his guregen on the most dangerous missions, however, and they tended to be killed at a high rate. Most of them never had the chance to return home for very long. Being a son-in-law to Genghis Khan was not merely an apprenticeship phase, as it would be for a small herder; for these men it became a brief, but usually lethal, career.A tribe acquired prestige and material benefits if Genghis Khan chose to marry one of his daughters to its leader. For the son-in-law, however, the honor was almost certainly a death sentence as well. He served virtually as the sacrificial victim in exchange for his tribe’s prosperity. He would give his life in battle for Genghis Khan, and in return his tribe would benefit and his own offspring would be rewarded. A guregen entered into a harsh bargain."

Perhaps GJ made the right choice by opting to become HYS' son-in-law instead.:D

Genghis Khan had a great fondness for Gwok Jing for most of LOCH, and treated Gwok Jing almost as if he were another son. I wonder if part of such feelings didn't arise from the notion that Gwok Jing's youth paralleled Temujin's own in several ways. Like Temujin, Gwok Jing lost his father at an early age and had to flee in the care of his mother from their family's enemies. Temujin must have seen a reflection of his own youth in Gwok Jing's predicament.
