When I read the last part of ROCH first edition, Yang Guo's martial arts level really questioned me.

1. When he first met with Guo Xiang after 16 (or rather 15.5) years and they went to pick up Zhou Botong, Yang Guo and Zhou Botong engaged into a fight. I really expected that he could handle ZBT, or at least on par with, otherwise it would be kind of embarrassing in front of GX. However, without using Sad Palms, YG was on the losing end, slowly but kind of surely.

That fight barely involved internal energy so I think it's accurate enough to judge that YG's technique level is marginally below ZBT.

2. When Huang Rong, Yi Deng, Zhou Botong and some other useless people went to look for Guo Xiang, they got into a fight with the Golden Wheel Monk. First it was a 1-on-1 fight between Yi Deng and the monk, and the monk held the upper hand. Later when ZBT got angry and joined the battle, the monk thought to himself that if he and ZBT fought against each other, it would take a very long time to decide the victor so now with two great-level fighters, he had no choice but to retreat.

What I concluded from this fight is that ZBT's level is somewhat on par with that of the GWM.

3. The last battle between Yang Guo and the Golden Wheel Monk. The story stated that even though they seemed equal, after a while (like 100 more moves), Yang Guo, despite being unarmed, would definitely outpower the monk, who was fighting with two of his golden wheels. It was only when Guo Xiang was endangered that the monk turned the tide of the fight because YG got injured trying to protect her. And we all know that YG can't utilize Sad Palms' power anymore since by this time, he's already reunited with Xiao Long Nu.

So what's the deal here?

Di Yun placed his palm upon [Wan Zhenshan]'s shoulder: "Uncle Wan, I don't care about the wrongs you did me before, I just want to know, were you responsible for my teacher's death?" He raised his Heavenly Glow internal energy (Shen Zhao Jing). Instantly, Wan Zhenshan felt as if his body fell into a giant roast oven, his blood being raised to the boiling point. He could hardly withstand it for even a moment.

From all his fights and interactions with Linghu Chong, TBG came across as a highly likable character. Jin Yong really glossed over the more sinister side of a rapist and only showed us Tian's straightforward, courageous and skillful side.

He was a bandit and a very powerful adventurer.

But when Tian Boguang had his balls cut off, he meekly accepted his new life as a eunuch. He who was once an EXTREMELY viril outlaw. He suffered the same fate as Lin Pingzhi and Yue Buqun, yet did not even receive superb sword moves in compensation.

Does anyone find this odd? Could you imagine someone like Ouyang Ke suddenly becoming a lapdog, harboring no enmity towards the person who destroyed his manhood? How about the lecherous Xuan Ming elder? Would he react as meekly as Tian did?

I believe that when a powerful, viril outlaw has castration forced upon him, he would go nuts and become even more chaotic than before. An even worse, vengeful kind of outlaw.

Eunuchs were looked down upon, especially by a powerful, proud warrior from Wu lin. Ren Woxing refused castration, regardless of any potential reward he might reap from it. Even Zuo Lengchan said a firm NO. Would any of these 2 react as peacefully as Tian, I highly doubt it. If someone decided to castrate them to punish them for the numerous lives they killed, I believe they would rather choose death over castration.

The shaolin head abbot of State of Divinity aka smiling swordsman/ wanderer seem to have less people who are impress with him in this forum. Why is that? During his bout with Ren Wo Xing he was clearly dominating him, showing that there is a gap in their skills. In fact, it is implied that Feng Zhang would have certainly won that bout if he wasn't trick in to letting his guard down/ distracted. It was a one sided bout I don't understand why some underestimate his YJJ when it showed that he was immune to Ren Wo Xing, XXDF aka leeching star, that impressive feat by itself alone since no other character in the novel was able to accomplish such. Added, that he was dominating his Ren Wo Xing who aside from DFBB and Feng Qing Yang seemed to be most feared in wulin during the moment.

This is the first in a series of speculative discussion threads in a format that I borrowed from my friends at Comicbook Resources.Com (and perhaps they learned the format somewhere else).

Here's the set up: we take two random characters from wuxia fiction (any author, any timeline), and have them meet in a casual situation (dining at a restaurant, etc.). This is their first face-to-face encounter with each other, though they will have heard of each other and know at least some things (e.g. what the wulin public generally knows) about the other. At the beginning of the encounter, they are not inclined to fight or otherwise compete in martial arts (although that could change depending on how the conversation goes); instead, they strike up a conversation and try to get acquainted. Depending on their respective personalities, points of view, etc., they could end up becoming friends and enjoying great conversation, leave feeling indifferent about the other person, or engage in conflict.

We'll try to pick characters who might have certain areas of similarity or contrast that would make a discussion between them interesting.

Our first two characters for the Sit and Talk are Gu Long's Lee Chum Foon and Jin Yong's Yeung Gor.

Yeung Gor walks into a tavern somewhere in the Central Plains. Yeung Gor is in the tenth year of his sixteen-year wait for Little Dragon Girl. He spots a charismatic, middle-aged man seated at one of the tables, coughing his way through a vessel of fine wine. Yeung Gor notes the dagger on the table near the man's hand and realizes that this must be the famous Lee Chum Foon of Little Lee's Flying Dagger.

Yeung Gor seats himself at the same table opposite to Lee Chum Foon and, wearing a friendly smile, says, "Brother. Can I buy you a drink?"

How does the discussion go from there? YOU write the dialogue!

For a long time, we've always talked about Xixing Dafa as being an imperfect version of Beiming Shengong, which is why it had the problems with containing the internal energies. There was also talk (never substantiated in the book) of Ren Woxing's method being 'forcibly suppressing' the internal energies, which contributed to his death. But while reading the translation of DGSD, I came across this gem:

Quote:

Li QiuShui's chest and back sustained heavy injuries, unexpectedly she lost control of her internal energy, its similar to a flood being left unchecked, its about to burst out of the dam and flow away. The martial arts of Carefree Sect is number one under the heaven, however if the practitioner lose control of internal energy, the energy would flow around and collide with each other, it can't drain out, the pain and suffering during this period is indescribable. In an instant, Li QiuShui felt all the acupoints in her body are numb and itchy, she is panic-stricken, she is aware that her injuries are incurable...

From this, we can see that BMSG had almost the exact same problem, just described in less detail, that RWX and LHC faced with XXDF! Based on this, I would say that Xixing Dafa's so called 'flaw' is actually a flaw that was in the original BMSG; RWX originally had problems solving the flaw, but eventually did so, most likely through a method similar to whatever Li Qiushui was using.

Discuss?
