I was recently exposed to the pop culture facet that is Asian TV series programs through a friend who recommended Huan Zhu Ge Ge I & II as a way for me to practice Mandarin (I'm trying to teach myself). I think it was the greatest thing I have ever watched, but I understand that the word play in that series is not a common form of humor. My parents told me the author was incredibly talented in writing the script and that they have never seen any other tv series that used language like that to make jokes (Xiao Yan Zi is so hilarious!). However, my parents haven't watched anything in the last 15 years, so I'm sure much has come out since then (including Huan Zhu Ge Ge) and I am hoping someone can tell me that they are wrong and that Huan Zhu Ge Ge being a smash hit inspired other script writers to use that kind of humor.
Do you know of any other series that do that (word play)?
Also, as I am a newbie to TV series, can anyone recommend any stuff, knowing that I like the style of Huan Zhu Ge Ge I & II? I like stuff set in ancient times (although I'm open to suggestions involving more modern settings). I would like something funny and something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to watch with my parents. Any suggestions?

1-Feng Yun1 & 2
2-Top on the forbidden city(the ending s**k....don really like the female lead actress)
3-westside story(but i hate the ending as it wasnt clear...dunno if wallace and cyndi are together or not)
4-chuang qiu xiao zi(again..the ending...)
5-Goodbye Girl

favorite series so far:
MARS--Zaizai certainly improved much since MG 1 & 2.
MG1--original storyline and the guys were cute and HOT!
DOLPHIN BAY--original storyline, however, main actress too scrawny.

METEOR GARDEN WAS THE BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST series i've seen...i'm itching to watch Mars although I don't know if it is any good. MG2 had a VERY disappointing storyline...what's the point if the whole thing is him with someone else and then the last few episodes he's chasing Shan Cai again? I rather stick with the classic first story where the fireworks and sparks were. although the filming seemed very amatuer...the storyline was basically good, acting was so-so...but you know who can complain when they have the faces to swoon for? :D
