Ha Mo Gung effects: Hung 7 Gung's injury vs. Gwok Jing's injury

North Beggar Hung 7 Gung and Gwok Jing were both injured by West Poison Au Yeung Fung's Ha Mo Gung during LOCH. Whereas Hung 7 Gung needed two years to recover from his injury, however, Gwok Jing fully recovered from his injury within ten days.

Au Yeung Fung most likely used a more powerful attack against Hung 7 Gung than he later did against Gwok Jing. After all, Hung 7 Gung was far more powerful fighter than Gwok Jing during LOCH, and Au Yeung Fung could not afford to take the old beggar lightly. Moreover, Hung 7 Gung was Au Yeung Fung's mortal enemy; Au Yeung Fung had no reason to hit Hung with anything less than his most powerful strike. On the other hand, Au Yeung Fung needed Gwok Jing alive to recite the text of the 9 Yum Jen Ging for him, so Au Yeung could not afford to use lethal force on Gwok. Even if Au Yeung Fung hit Gwok Jing with a less powerful Ha Mo Gung strike than he used against Hung 7 Gung, however, Gwok Jing's injury was compounded by Yeung Hong's throwing a dagger into his chest.

Gwok Jing's relatively quick recovery is attributable to Wong Yung's use of the 9 Yum Jen Ging's Deun Gwut Yik Gun Peen, which the young couple already had access to at the time of Hung 7 Gung's injury. If it worked for Gwok Jing in just ten days, why couldn't Gwok Jing and Wong Yung just use this same technique to heal Hung 7 Gung? As it was, Hung 7 Gung's injury did not make much progress towards recovery until after Gwok Jing and Wong Yung obtained the translated Sanskrit portion of the 9 Yum Jen Ging from South Emperor 1 Deng the Monk, and even then, Hung 7 Gung needed another year and a half to fully recover.

Very strange how the Ha Mo Gung injuries of Hung 7 Gung and Gwok Jing were treated so differently.

Hong Qigong was actually poisoned by OYF; that was the difference. Venom, IIRC.

maybe H7G had more to recover, so it took longer time? :p

The two snakes that bit the old beggar, correct? I wonder if that would have even worked against Gwok Jing considering Gwok's resistance to snake venom as a benefit of having consumed the blood of Leung Tze Yung's giant snake.

Still, it seemed to me that Gwok Jing's injury was more imminently life-threatening than Hung 7 Gung's. With Gwok Jing, it seemed that if not for Wong Yung's intervention, he would have died very soon. Hung 7 Gung's injury would sideline him from wulin for a long time, but it didn't seem like his life was in imminent danger.

Actually, without Yideng's help, H7G would have been sidelined from Wulin, period.

With regards to Guo Jing, keep in mind that he also suffered a knife-wound given to him by Yang Kang, and that his 'base' of internal energy wasn't as strong to begin with.

IIRC the strike on H7G prevented him from circulating his internal energy to heal himself, putting various blocks on various gates in the circulatory system (don't ask me for the details). Since he couldn't even begin to heal himself, his injury couldn't be healed in the normal way. The only way was for Yideng to use his concentrated energy to push open those gates, in the same way that he helped Huang Rong clear her pressure points. However, the Sanskrit part of 9yin contained methods to allow one to clear those pressure points oneself, so H7G was able to use that to start his recuperation.

From the description, the 9yin method seems to work in the same way that the snake gallbladders did for Yang Guo, if not in quite as drastic a fashion - they cleared the pressure points, and allowed one to exercise one's internal energy freely.

it was more life threatening but in the world of martial arts, physical & internal injuries tend to be treated differently. unless it's immediate death, then there's no treatment period.

Did Yeung Gor need that, however? He was suffering from blood loss due to the severing of his arm, and he was still fighting the Passion Flower/Icy Soul Needle poisoning, but I don't think he suffered any internal injury at the time.

It didn't. The snake gallbladders directly increased internal energy (like other precious herbs like ginseng).

The 9 Yin method was actually intended to increase your internal energy training rate. Normally you have to be careful not to fire deviate and screw up your meridians (which is pretty much death). But 9 Yin conveniently comes with a method to clear that up turning a disaster into a gain.


As for H7G's injury, the snake poison alone could have killed him if not for some mitigating events. Compounded with a true deathblow from OYF it was made even worse. Afterwards, he spent all his remaining energy to expel the poison. Then even later, the long duration of sustained injury made it considerably more difficult to heal H7G.

In any case, GJ probably just didn't remember such a useful part of 9 Yin =/
