Hi,
Is Turkey Day a holiday in Europe and Asia, where ppl get the day off work?
It's a U.S. and Canada thing only, as far as I know, with the Canadians practicing it on a different day in a different month (and with different cultural practices).
The *turkey* (not to be confused with Turkey, the country) version of Thanksgiving is a U.S. custom only.
Thanksgiving is quite closely connecetd with north american colonial history. Its origins are probably older (traditional harvest & religious festivals in the Old World), but Thanksgiving Day as we know it is a quite distinctly North American thing, I believe - pilgrims, Indians, city upon a hill, y'know - such stuff.
(I know very little about the Canadian version, though - so there may be different connotations there. Any Canadians here willing to give their account of a typical Thanksgiving in Canada?)
(In any case, there's no such holiday in my neck of the woods - which would be Central Europe...;-))
I'm so glad to hear that, since it means I will get a few more working days out of my European colleagues ;)
My Mandarin-language teacher told the class that people in China have taken to using Thanksgiving as an excuse to have a big feast, but of course it isn't a holiday for them.
The American Thanksgiving began when Natives helped the Europeans during their early years in America from starving. I remember watching a funny Thanksgiving lampoon. We don't have such an equivalent day here in Asia because we are natives of our countries. Many Asian cultures have celebration after harvests, which can be giving thanks too.
I think if those American natives had an inkling that they will be living on reservations a few 100 years down the road, they would have kept their food to themselves. :D I wonder if native Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.
Well, you guys are probably gonna say 'wow' when you hear this.
No, in my place 'Thanksgiving' is not a holiday, but it's an uber big party which involves more than IDR 5-20 million a day for one family (about USD 500-2000 with one USD = 10000 IDR), even in the midst of a heavy economic crisis.
We're pretty consumptive, don't you think? :D
