lots of people...but were they even the majority of the people? If it isn't even right 50% of the time, how can it be a strong correlation?

    don't forget about this line:

“Drop that ‘once a man sees a nun, he loses all his bets’ nonsense!” Dingyi said angrily. “How could you have believed that? There are so many people here that have seen us, do all of them have bad luck now?

More than the majority of the people who were actually named, yes. The nameless people, who knows?

There was a thread about this in the past. And after checking, you're the original poster as well:

And then something similiar in regards to Duan Yu's kowtow:

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

Does this apply only to Buddhist nuns, or any variety of nun?

I know some people who've been to Catholic school who would tell you that Catholic nuns can be pretty bad luck too.

You named individuals dear. There were probably hundred present at the ceremony. For example, Linghu Chong had bad luck, the the vast majority of Huashan sect remained been unscathed. The same goes for other sects, save perhaps Hengshan since Liu Zhenfeng's entire family was killed. But for the others, it's hard to imagine that more than a few individuals from each sect/clan were injured. It's not as if everyone decided to go all out and brawl with each other like the 5 Yues in the Huashan cave at the end of XAJH.

Or perhaps, judging from the list of casualties you generated, you should modify the statement to be "prettly little nuns (like Yilin) bring in bad luck"

Actually, shortly thereafter, Huashan suffered a string of terrible fortune result in the death or banishment of nearly the entirety of their senior apprentices; the nuns themselves eventually had their leadership wiped out; ditto for Taishan; Songshan was nearly eradicated by the end of XAJH.

Hell, probably the won-ton guy died too. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I blame it all on so many nuns being seen in public...

And don't forget - 37 members of (northern) Hengshan died in the battle at the Dragon Spring Sword-Forging valley. Evidently they are not immune to their own 'bad-luck aura' either .

Songshan also lost a lot of members that day, with Lingwu Chong personally accounting for over 50 casualties (not all were fatalities though) - probably due to the high nun concentration...

A significant portion of wulin were in turmoil throughout XAJH. Doesn't mean they all saw a nun.

This makes me think of an ARTS-type joke.

Wuxia Character A: Do you have a problem?

Wuxia Character B (looking around): Nun.

Ken, this is one of the best jokes I've encountered this week, and OT: the week's ending soon yeah.
