In the film The Postmodern Life of My Aunt, “my aunt” played by Siqin Gaowa, meets Pan Zhichang, an amateur Peking Opera Singer played by Chow Yun-fat, and they fall in love. In the film Zhao Wei played the daughter of “my aunt.”

Her performance in The Postmodern Life of My Aunt earned Zhao Wei a nomination for the best actress in a supporting role award, at the Hong Kong Film Awards 2008.





Zhao Wei didn’t win the award. After the awards ceremony, she went back to her home in Wuhu, Anhui Province. There she was to begin work on a new project, Epic of A Woman, a television adaptation of Yan Geling’s novel of the same title.

In the television series, Zhao Wei played the heroine Tian Sufei, and Liu Ye played her husband, Ouyang Yu.

The ratings for “The Return of the Pearl Princess” were as high as 44% in Beijing and 55% in Shanghai. Zhao Wei became famous overnight. At the time she was a drama student in her second year at Beijing Film Academy.

In 2000, two years after The Return Of the Pearl Princess was broadcasted, Zhao Wei returned to college.

The Return of the Pearl Princess was a triumph for Zhao Wei. She was introduced into a wider and more sophisticated arena. In 2002, she was chosen to play a bald-headed girl in Shaolin Soccer, directed by Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow. From the bald-headed girl in Shaolin Soccer, she went on to play the careless taxi driver in Longest Night in Shanghai, a rubbish collector in My Dream Girl and a smoking cook in The Postmodern Life of My Aunt. Always, it seemed, Zhao Wei’s character was ugly.

But before long, Zhao Wei would encounter her first setback in the world of film.



Green Tea is the story of Wu Fang, a woman with a master’s degree who goes through a series of blind dates. She always dresses badly because she has no fashion sense, and she always orders a cup of green tea because she believes what someone called Lang Lang tells her, that green tea will tell her fortune in love. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Wu Fang and Lang Lang are one and the same person. Wu Fang is suffering from schizophrenia, and is transformed into the fashionable Lang Lang at night. In the film, Zhao Wei plays two roles with two very different personalities. It was a true test of her acting ability.

Green Tea was a major box-office failure. But Zhao Wei quickly bounced back, and in 2005 she won the best actress award at the Shanghai International Film Festival for her performance in the film Lover’s Knot.

Six years after Zhao Wei finished her undergraduate degree, she returned to college to study for a master’s degree in directing.

The album Angel’s Travelling Suitcase won Zhao Wei a best singer award in 2007.

Zhao Wei has been singing for ten years. Today, the style of her music is very different from what it was ten years ago.

Zhao Wei’s first album, Xiao Yanzi, Spirit Crossing Time and Space, was released in 1998, at the height of the popularity of The Return of the Pearl Princess. It sold 600,000 copies, and transformed Zhao Wei into a singer.

From 1998 to 2001, Zhao Wei released a new album almost every year. Her best selling record sold as many as 1,500,000 copies. However, none of her early albums marked any significant break with the style of Xiao Yanzi. In 2001, The Final Parting sold only 500,000 copies. People began to question her future in music, and Zhao Wei remained silent for a while. But she always remained faithful to her ambition of being a singer.

Three years later, Zhao Wei released an album, Gone With The Wind, that marked a radical change in her musical style. It sold a million copies.

The most prominent movie release of 2008 has been Red Cliff, adapted from Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It tells the story of the battle of Red Cliff, and Zhao Wei plays Sun Shangxiang, sister of Duke Sun Quan. Once again, she appears dressed for war instead of in a more feminine costume.
