That's Shuang Er. The Emperor appointed WXB to be the commander in a war, with the Russians(I think), after he came back to Mainland with his wives. After marriage with the 7 ladies, Shuang Er has the honor to accompany WXB everywhere he goes (doing some tasks), while the rest of the wives stays home. Maybe WXB feels safe to bring her, coz she might have the best martial arts skill among the wives^^
He's a scholar, right? Havent watched it yet..

A scholar? WXB?LOL
He doesn't know how to read and write. When he's away and the Emperor wants to send him a message, the emperor often kindly take the trouble to make the msg in a form of drawing, coz he knows WXB cannot read.
Don't know how it was in the book, but in this series, he has a very little knowledge abt martial arts, he can only do easy (and ridiculous) martial arts. Like how to run/escape fast (the skill taught by Jiu Nan, A Ke's master), and some 3 easy moves taught by the leader of the Mythical Dragon sect, which one of them is a trick how to make a lady who wants to attack him be in a position where he can grab her chest, and he accidentally suceed performing this skill to A Ke
When Shuang Er is with him, he tend to hide behind Shuang Er, when danger comes. But at some other scenes, I find him brave enough to fight some people only with his dagger, or even those with high-skilled martial arts... of course IF he has the idea how to defeat them without martial arts.
Basically WXB survives and reach success with his cunning and smart thoughts, bluffs(smooth-talker), manipulating people, his generosity with money and his pure luck.
Btw, I like Shuang Er too, in this series, she's one of my favorite character since I watched the Tony Leung's version (I disliked the one in Dicky Cheung's version though -_-). The actress, He Zhuo Yan, portrayed her very well. I also love her costume. And somehow she looks cool in fight scenes, maybe it's her Chun Lee hairstyle^^ And also her whip weapon.
But the actress was only 18... while Huang Xiao Ming was 29 during the filming, I wonder if its okay that HXM kept kissing and hugging her throughout the series, LOL xD

Of course, Su Quan in the 85 version looks old enough to be WXB's grandmother
I thought so too, its either Shuang Er or Su Quan who is the best fighter. In ep48, it was both Su Quan and Shuang Er who disguised as guards when Mao came to kill WXB, coz Mao thought WXB is the one who killed Chen Jinnan, his master. Then, Su Quan and Shuang Er protected WXB. So maybe the reason WXB always bring Shuang Er for other tasks, is bcoz Su Quan have a baby to take care^^
Su Quan is the smartest too, right? When WXB panicked when it comes abt A Ke or abt his master, Su Quan is the only one who's able to calm him down and cool his head off with her rational thoughts and opinions. I like the actress, Hu Ke, who portrayed Su Quan and I wished she has more screentime in the series, like the character has in Dicky Cheung's version![]()
Nope. I think none of the adaptations shares equal screentime for the wives coz the novel itself didn't give equal screentime for the wives characters. If I'm not mistaken, this series stay close to the book in many things including the wives' screentimes. Ranked from the one who has the most screentime to the least amount of appearances:
1. A Ke & Shuang Er; they share pretty much the same amount of screentime. Although probably Shuang Er has more than A Ke, but A Ke is the most important to the plot or has a big role, and she's the only wife whose both parents show up (beside the princess). I have to say, they are also WXB's favorites too, he loves these two the most. Proven at the end where the Emperor talked abt another official whose 2nd wife eloped with the horsecart's driver, WXB said, "A Ke and Shuang Er would never elope with the horsecart's driver!" instead of "None of my wives would ever elope..." ^^
2. Fang Yi & Mu Jianping; they had pretty big roles the next, and alone-screentime more than I thought. Coz in Dicky Cheung's version, the two doesn't have that much role in the plot and make them like good-for-nothing wives^^ I guess this one stay close to the novel.
3. Su Quan & Princess Jian Ning; Su Quan is not romantically involved with WXB until she's pregnant with his childWhile Jian Ning has a big role only at one plot, when the Emperor arranged her marriage with an official's son, around Ep27-30.
4. Zheng Rou; sad to say, even in the novel, she's more or less irrelevant to the plot. Maybe she's just there, to make it all seven^^ In Dicky Cheung's version, this character was erased completely and replaced with a character created by Wong Jing^^
The friendship. Many of the touching/moving moments are WXB-KangXi's scenes. I agree with someone who has mentioned before, the last dialogues thru space between WXB and KangXi was touching... they realized things cannot be the same anymore for Xiao Guizi(WXB's fake name when he first met KangXi) and Xiao Xuanzi(KangXi's fake name).
More touching moments I liked, is when they met again after several years separation, WXB cried, KangXi tried hard not to cry, but he was finally in tears, then they talked abt who got more children... WXB only has 3, KangXi already has 7 ^^
I also like the scene before the separation, when WXB thought he already endanger KangXi's life by telling a rebellion family KangXi's room location at the palace, coz he was forced to tell. And his effort to send a warning message to KangXi also failed. He was so desperate he thought he'll loose his friend, Xiao Xuanzi forever... but when he finally came back to the palace and hurriedly burst in to KangXi's room, Kang Xi is sitting there, yawning. WXB felt so happy and glad that he didn't realized he's in tears.
I wonder though, in DoMD84 with Tony Leung and Andy Lau, there was a scene where they had a heated argument up to the point where WXB slapped KangXi. However, in this series, WXB not even once feels angry to the emperor, so there was never any heated argument, except on their last dialogue. I wonder whether that scene where WXB slapped KangXi was in the book?
In this series, none serious stuff on the romance, except probably WXB only act serious to A Ke. In Dicky Cheung's version though, there were alot of serious scenes between WXB and Su Quan, trying to convince her to accept the idea of polygamyDicky Cheung's version is pretty good on the lovey-dovey stuff, he has good chemistry as well with all the wives.
Oh? I'm not familiar with the storyline actually, I thought he's scholarly coz he makes up a lot of flowery phrases in the Dicky Cheung version. Not at the beginning, but somewhere to the middle where his words actually make some sense. Thought he'd started becoming scholarly then.
A Ke? Which one is she, again? Is she the one who Chu Yan portrayed in Dicky's version?

Is there an "age of consent" or an age of legal adulthood in China? In the US if she's 18 then it would be okay for someone 10 years older to be doing those things for a tv series - at least, it would be okay in a legal sense.
For some people it still wouldn't be okay even though it's legal. But my brother-in-law is 10 years older than my sister - they're just both a lot older than 18 and 29.![]()
你看这些云彩,聚了又散,散了又聚,人生离合也是一样。
I'm watching this series online w/ Viet dubbed (only 1 person talking). I'm only on episode 4, the kid that played as the Emperor is so cuteeeeeeee & adorable, while the kid that played as WXB is too smart, too tricky
Am I the only thinks that Cherrie Ying is not pretty? Based on the pictures I'm looking throughout this thread, her face is too long and she seem kind of conceited.
So WXB's wives in vietnamese name are:
1). Kie^'n Ninh Co^ng Chu'a (princess)
2). Song Nhi
3). Phu*o*ng Di
4). Mo^.c Kie^'m Bi`nh
5). A O' aka A Kha
6). Long Nhi (Shu Quan ??? the lady that pretended to the the queen, if I rememeber correctly, her name was Long Nhi)
Zheng Rou, I don't know the Viet name for this one![]()
