this is a long series. if it weren't uncut, it would be 60+ eps. they must've dragged the relationship arcs.

I know they did air this show in Taiwan (On GTV or CTV, I think) last summer, but I don't know if it was the uncut version.
How come most 江湖 (jiānghú) wanderers never worry about money? I wonder how a 大俠 (dàxiá) make a living...does meddling in people's business and righting wrongs pay well?

So I tried to watch this version last night and it just doesn't sit right w/ me. HXM just looked too insincere, even towards the emperor. In most shows, I wish the childhood sequence would be over to see the main character; however, in this I was really sad when they were gone (kinda like my feeling towards tvb's hsds 2000 when Lawrence walked out of the cave).

uh...if you're watching this series simply because qiao zhen yu is in it, then i suggest you skip, because his role is really really small, i barely remember that he was in it.

Recently rewatching this series with proper English subs (JiangHu). I've always wanted to know what has really been said between KangXi and WXB in their last conversation in the final episode. And I'm quite appalled to understand that they never get to reconcile their friendship in the end, even though they both desperately want things to go back the way they were. It was such a sad ending for me, now that I fully understand what were said.

Comparing to the 1984 and 2000 versions, these 3 adaptations have completely different last dialogues of WXB-KX. However, the 1984 and 2000 versions ended with WXB-KX in quite a friendly term, although they eventually part ways.

My question is, how did WXB-KangXi's relationship ends in the book? Of course, I can guess that they eventually part ways, but were they parted in good terms like in 84 and '00, or bad terms like in Mainland version?

I think the idea of casting child actors for the earlier eps is brilliant. Makes their friendship so real. I like the fact this adaptation put quite emphasis in the friendship between WXB and KangXi. (the friendship story in the 2000 version was horrible) Still, HXM-Wallace can't beat Tony-Andy's chemistry as bestfriends. But maybe that's actually the intention? Just like Kang Xi said in this Mainland adaptation, Xiao Xuanzi was dead ever since Xiaobao found out he's the Emperor. Perhaps since then, WXB can never see Xuanzi/Kangxi the same way ever again, thus the less chemistry between the adult WXB-KX^^

Despite the horrible editing, the Mainland adaptation have pushed DOMD to my top 4 fav JY stories^^ I really need to get the books!

@loislane - the English translation for DOMD is happening right now in the Translations forum. I highly recommend reading as Foxs is doing a great job. Also you must remember that WXB starts out as 11-12 yr old in the story. Even when he ventures outside the palace, he is no more than 14 yrs old, returning to see the emperor no more than couple times a year during all his adventures. I think the story concludes when WXB is about late twenties.

I don't want to give away spoilers but the Minford translation suggests an epilogue (not sure if that happens in the Chinese version).

Thank you for the suggestion, smurf120! I'll check it out.
I finally get a hold of the novel in my native language, and yes the epilogue narration was in the mainland adaptation. But if you meant WXB's conversation with his mother, then no, it's not included in the mainland ver^^
And I got my answer already^^ Apparently, the last WXB-KX conversation never exist in the novel, that's why they are so different in all three adaptations. If only DOMD TVB 1998 (Jordan Chan) is english-subbed, I'd really like to watch that version as well, now that I'm a fan of the story^^

Another question regarding this 2008 series, I absolutely love some of the background musics, I heard 4-5 musics that has cheerful oriental tunes, does anyone happen to know whether they are original music scores by Zhang Jizhong's team? Or were they stolen from other movies' soundtrack?? I know there were some Disney-like BGMs as well, but the cheerful, upbeat oriental tunes (like the ones played during scenes of little WXB and little KX playing around with each other) really took my attention, I doubt these musics were stolen from other movies' soundtracks... or were they?

So far, among Zhang Jizhong's series, I believe only XAJH01 and LoCH03 used original music scores. So I'd really like to know abt some of the scores used in Royal Tramp 2008. Tried to look if an original soundtrack CD of this series available, but I believe it's not... too bad.

I can't believe that crazy, over-the-top, bizarre, two-part Hong Kong film from 1992 that I watched as a kid (starring Stephen Chow) ... was actually based on 鹿鼎记.

I didn't find this out until just recently. It's shocking to think that this ZJZ TV adaptation is based on the same wuxia novel as those two films ... beyond bizarre.

But even more bizarre is the fact that, 16 years later, Xu Jin Jiang (Elvis Tsui) portrays the same character (Oboi) that he played in those films.

I finally finished this and posted a thorough review of just how horrible this story is.

It boggles the mind that the same person who wrote the wuxia masterpiece that is Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils ...

... also wrote this insanely overrated, utterly horrible, complete waste of time and poor excuse for a story.

If Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils is the expensive dinner you eat at a fancy restaurant ... then The Deer and the Cauldron is the fecal matter that comes out your butt after it's been digested.

So horrible it actually makes The Return of the Condor Heroes seem GOOD by comparison.

    Ugh.
