ancient because anything could happen. the love stories are more touching. tvb hadn't made any good modern series since golden faith.

i don't like tvb's ancient dramas. don't have much oomph. i like mainland ancient productions better.

    Default Modern

Modern mainly because I can "relate" to certain themes.

Don't really like ancient series because:

    - Don't understand some ancient Chinese sayings.
    - Find it hard to make out whats true and whats not (in terms of ancient things).
    - Costumes are kind of overbloated as to what they really were irl back them.
    - Bores me sometimes.
    - Requires some understanding of Chinese history to fully appreciate it.

30s to 70s: Haven't see a lot of these and probably the rarist of TVB's timeline productions. There have been a few on the Shanghai era (late 20s/30s)...I suspect maybe it's because this period was one of (perhaps also the darkest) days of Chinese history that TVB has avoided making too many productions on it as such.

The rarist is the 60s/70s era, hardly any except Police Precint number 7 (七號差館) starring Lawrence Ng, Nancy Sit and Maggie Cheung and Seven Sisters (七姊妹) with Gallen Lo and Charmaine Sheh.

well, you don't really need to understand ancient chinese saying to enjoy the those series. I don't really understand half of what those chinese saying are, yet I find they are appealing to watch. The storylines.
