40? I can barely decide on my top 5, much less 40.
    春花秋月几时了,
    往事知多少?
    小楼昨夜又东风,
    故国不堪回首明月中.
    雕栏玉砌应犹在,
    只是朱颜改.
    问君能有几多愁,
    恰似一江春水向东流.

Yeah, but organizing into a list of the best ones is quite an undertaking.

Moin is quite right... the first 5 would be easy but the rest would be just the first movie that comes in my head and I am just filling in the slots

Maybe that is only happening to me and Moin only

Only 40 movies, I'm sure you've watched more than 40
Also, I was thinking about doing them in order. Afterall, what's the point in coming out with a Top 40 list if you aren't going to list them in order? I could rattle off the Top 100 movies of all time not in any order, it also won't have any meaning either because that doesn't really require any judgement on my part to decide that Casablanca deserves to be one of the top 100 but Gigli doesn't. I could list you the top 10 fighters in the LoCH and RoCH in no particular order or come out with Top 30 American Presidents in no particular order and it would mean just as much (diddly-squat). Just plainly listing in no particular order is really a cop out in my opinion. It shows that not only did I not put too much thought into this list, I hadn't taken time to compare the films to each other to decide whose more deserving, and I don't believe in my own taste enough to decisively say: "I like Shawshank Redemption better than any of the RoTKs" etc.

40?!? That's kind of a lot don't you think? Although not putting them in order kind of eliminates the purpose of doing a list. You should also reconsider your country codes. It took me awhile to realize that "SK" was for South Korea--I thought that it was short for Slovakia at the beginning. One last thing... are you sure that "Gandhi" is an Indian-Bristish co-production? I think it's just a British production.

    My list (in order) :

    1. The Empire Strikes Back (1980, US)
    2. Gone with the Wind (1939, US)
    3. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981, US)
    4. Star Wars (1977, US)
    5. L.A. Confidential (1997, US)
    6. The Ten Commandments (1956, US)
    7. The Terminator (1984, US)
    8. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982, US)
    9. La gloire de mon père (1990, FR)
    10. Gladiator (2000, US)
    11. The Shawshank Redemption (1994, US)
    12. Superman: The Movie (1978, US)
    13. Ben-Hur (1959, US)
    14. Billy Elliot (2000, GB)
    15. A Bug's Life (1998, US)
    16. Die Hard (1988, US)
    17. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958, US)
    18. Au revoir les enfants (1987, FR)
    19. Singin' in the Rain (1952, US)
    20. Stand by Me (1986, US)

As you can see, I like Hollywood movies. I also like British productions in general but they're not on the very top of my list.

    1. Schindler's List
    2. Star Wars

The rest I cannot really rank them:

    A Few Good Men
    Alien

    American History X
    Beauty and the Beast
    Cape Fear
    Comrades, Almost A Love Story
    Crimson Tide

    Face/Off
    Finding Nemo
    Gandhi
    Ghost
    Guns of Navarone
    Infernal Affairs
    Nightmare on Elm Street
    One True Thing
    Philadelphia
    Pulp Fiction
    Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
    Se7en
    Sense and Sensibility
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
    Speed
    The Accused
    The Fugitive
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle
    The Lord of the Rings
    The Paper
    The Prince of Tides
    The Shawshank Redemption
    The Truman Show
    Tootsie
Woman From the Lake of Scented Souls

(Except for the top 5, I can think of quite a number of films that can at times outrank the above films)

Yes, if I have to compile a list, the 3 LoTR films will be in it. Yes, it'll be more likely for you to see those three than the ORIGINAL Star Wars movies on my list(!) .

Just make sure they show up behind Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Godfather I and II, Shawshank Redemption, Chinatown, Raging Bull, Dr. Strangelove, Rear Window, Seven Samurais, and 12 Angry Men, then you'll be fine. Otherwise... thou shall be smoted (smited? smitten?).

Sometime, I believe I'm missing something because I find many highly acclaimed movies like Casablanca, Godfather I and II, Chinatown and Raging Bull EXTREMELY boring. Btw, A Bug's Life > Magnificent Seven > Seven Samurais.
