I'm not satisfied with your list. You have to list your fave IN ORDER. And a movie is a movie no matter if it's from Hollywood, Europe or HK. Why do people tend to separate the groups? Just mix them all together and give us a list and in order please. I must admit that 40 is a bit too many. I had an extremely hard time listing 20 and I have now realized that I have forgotten a few. I'll have too update it.
My obsessions: Joy Division, New Order, Bones, The Office.

Godamnit, 40 films? you really are asking for an effort arn't you?

    Well here goes:

    1. Chungking Express
    - so many levels of angst

    2. Once Upon a Time in the West
    - A Masterpiece in tension, and fantastically cynical when placed next to Ford/Wayne westerns.

    3. Mulholland Drive
    - Country girl loses her mind in Hollywood. Like LSD laced coffee, but funnier.

    4. The Third Man
    - Noir on location in old Vienna, right after WWII. Dark.

    5. Cries and Whispers
    - Normally, intimate chamber dramas don't interest me much. But this inconspicous Bergman masterpiece is so claustrophobic, you'll be wondering around in a haunted daze long afterwards. Usually ignored because of his flashier films (Fanny and Alexander, Persona, and The Seventh Seal).

    6. Ashes of Time
    - Screw all the complaints about the spoilt actions scenes. They never understood this film. I'm not going to say anymore, as this is a love it or hate it kind of film.

    7. Blade Runner
    - A Ridley Scott's vision of the future often imitated, but never bettered.

    8. Tokyo Story
    - Ozu may be boring to some, but there's something serene in his meditations. Providing you're in the right mood that is.

    9. Badlands
    - Sparse, moody and poetic. Malick Stomps all over other road movies like Thelma and Louise and True Romance.

    10. JFK
    - Whether the film tells the truth or not is of no real concern. The concern here is twelve thousand, three hundred and sixty seconds of meticulous technical perfection - you have any idea how much film that is?

    ----

Well theres my top ten, a tad pretentious and eclectic it may appear at first but I don't care much for appearing pretentious - I just detest the boring action packed no-brainer popcorn flicks which make their way into peoples top 10's.

Although of course, my list could be classed by some as the ultimate yawnfest as well, not to mention it could be classed as a complete shambles by the likes of rigid film buffs who insist on putting the Scorsese, Coppola, Kurowsawa, Kubrick, Renoirs etc right at the top of their lists without hesitation. But... I think I can just about defend my choice in these films - technically (mis-en-scen, montage, editing blah blah) as well as personally.

    ------

The rest of the list -

    11. Unforgiven
    12. A Clockwork Orange
    13. 2046
    14. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    15. The Big Lebowski
    16. Amelie
    17. Monty Python and the Holy Grail !
    18. Monty Python's The Life of Brian
    19. Eraserhead
    20. 8 1/2

    21. Apocalypse Now
    22. The Seventh Seal
    23. Persona
    24. Days of Being Wild
    25. Les Enfants du paradis
    26. Stand By Me
    27. Fight Club
    28. Manhattan
    29. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

    30. M
    31. Brazil
    32. Vertigo
    33. Dark City
    34. Eyes Wide Shut
    35. Ran
    36. A bout de Souffle
    37. Goodfellas
    38. The Wizard of Oz
    39. The Usual Suspects
    40. Evil Dead 2 (just for pure sillyness)

    -----

Well, thats my list, there are some films I know which should be included but are not and vice versa, but... its my list dagnamit!

Btw Jay_Z i thought they buried those Romancing Star films - I remember them being so stupidly funny when I was a kid during the 80's, but looking back now, they're almost as bad as 'Carry-on' films

Lol I don't think there's any need to defend your choices MYF. The topic does say "Your own Top 40" so to each his/her own. Besides some of your choices match my own and I'm pretty sure I'm not pretentious...unless my friends aren't telling me something

Wow, my own Top 40 list? And the list encompasses all of time? Hmm...a tall order indeed. I actually sat down and made a list of all the movies I watched in the last 10 years (at least the ones I remember watching) and my conclusion is that I've watched a lot of damn movies!

Anyways, here's my top 40, in no particular order really (disclaimer: subject to change at any moment...hey, I'm just covering myself for those great movies that have yet to be made )

I'm going to repeat what I said earlier:

"What's the point in coming out with a Top 40 list if you aren't going to list them in order? I could rattle off the Top 100 movies of all time not in any order, it also won't have any meaning either because that doesn't really require any judgement on my part to decide that Casablanca deserves to be one of the top 100 but Gigli doesn't. I could list you the top 10 fighters in the LoCH and RoCH in no particular order or come out with Top 30 American Presidents in no particular order and it would mean just as much (diddly-squat). Just plainly listing in no particular order is really a cop out in my opinion. It shows that not only did I not put too much thought into this list, I hadn't taken time to compare the films to each other to decide whose more deserving, and I don't believe in my own taste enough to decisively say: "I like Shawshank Redemption better than any of the RoTKs" etc.

That said, I'm too lazy and too much of a wimp to compile my own list. I'd spend like half a day compiling it, don't have the time to put forth the effort.

I would agree if we were asked to make a list that was more definitive and specific, like "List The Top 100 greatest horror movies of all time" (basically something like those AFI specials that one sees on TV). If this were the case then yeah, ranking the movies would be necessary as it sets a parameter (i.e. horror movies) and a variable (i.e. greatest) amongst movies that are similar.

Yet with a topic that just says "your Top 40," it's bit too open-ended. In my opinion, in a thread such as this, my main interest isn't how everybody ranks their movies but which movies made who's list (lol I found lyndsi's choice of "Dude, where's my car?" to be very interesting )

Besides, asking me to compare "There's something about Mary" to "The Manchurian Candidate," for example, is a bit unfair as these movies both have made a lasting impression on me, and both movies work on different levels. It's like asking me "which of your arms do you like better?" Well, I use my left arm for dexterous tasks while I use my right arm for tasks that require strength. How can I choose when both have their own merits?

I don't think not listing them in order is necessarily copping out. I mean, I did list the movies that I love the most and will stick with me for the rest of my life (and I'm pretty sure some with disagree with my choices...*cough* gladiator *cough*), but I just think ranking one above the other is a trivial matter since the list is a personal one.

Whew, that's my $0.02. I hope it made "cents" (bad joke...I know )

I don't tend to like them--well, there are films I've enjoyed, but few that would make my Top 40. I think it arises from my general like of interest in wuxia? Or perhaps my lazy unwillingness to read subtitles? Haha.
