Talking The Legend of the Fairy Swordsman/Chinese Paradin《仙劍奇俠傳》

Title: 仙剑奇侠传/Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan
Also known as: Chinese Paladin/The Magic Sword & the Chivalrous Youth / The Sword and the Fairy
Episodes: 34 or 38 depending on where it was broadcast
Broadcast network: CTV, TCS (Joint Mainland, Taiwan and Singapore production)
    Broadcast year: 24th Jan 2004
Theme song: 殺破狼 Sha Po Lang by JS

Main cast: Liu Yifei (Ling-er), Hu Ge (Li Xiaoyao), Liu Pingyan (Ah-nu), An Yixuan (Lin Yueru), Peng Yuyan (Tang Yu), Bryan Wong (Liu Jinyuan), Xie Junhao (Zui Jiu Xian), Zheng Peipei (Lao Lao)

Synopsis: Based on a popular RPG of the same name. The story takes place in a fantasy medieval China that's full of kung fu action, CG special effects, and whacky humor.

Li Xiao Yao, a "Stinky Punk", journeys to Dream Island to find a cure for his sick aunt. There he meets and marries the love of his life Ling'Er. On his way back home with the cure, he discovers that he's been tricked by the Lunar Sect Cult so that they can kidnap Ling'Er.

He awakens in his bed, having forgotten his entire trip to Dream Island but having saved his aunt. He rescues Ling'Er from the Lunar Sect Cult and is in turn rescued by a mysterious stranger who teaches him kung fu. Xiao Yao and Ling'Er travel to the capital to meet her father.

Along the way, they meet various people, get harassed by the Lunar Sect Cult, discover both of their histories, save the world and fall in love with each other all over again. It starts off sweet and light hearted but ends with plenty of tears.

generally its based on a game that will never make it to 34 episodes based on it so they added lotsa of plot changes which kinda makes the drama drag especially once u get to the middle portion. Its fun to watch in the beginning and when Xiaoyao and Yueru goes on their adventure to find LingEr but it kinda goes downhill after the reunion of almost all the fun ppl at the inn ends. Why the tragic ending, well maybe they feel that tragic endings make ppl remember more.

This series thread is already made in the Taiwan section. Should just discuss abt this series there. It will make it easier and avoid duplicates.

No wonder, thought I saw a different thread before but could not find it. Thanks!

i just bought this series and am up to episode13. the series is pretty good so far, except theres too much CGI for my liking, but well, what do you expect from a computer adaptation?

my fave character would have to be ady's yueru and hu ge's xiaoyao, they're at loggerheads all the time and its so hilarous to see them squabble. i much prefer xiaoyao with yueru than with lyf's ling'er. i liked ling'er at first but im starting to get sick of her as the series progresses, she's just so moody, depressing, so weak, falling sick, disappearing and stuff all the time( and partly due to the fact that yueru's so much nicer and lovable as compared to her)

i get irritated when yueru loves xiaoyao but he keeps putting her down and only caring for ling'er. and the worse thing is yueru keeps hiding her feelings and helps xiaoyao pacify ling'er to make him happy and yet, ling'er still acts so petty and jealous when yueru and xiaoyao just have a happy moment together, and puts on a long face all the time. and up till where im watching, she keeps trying to act all nice, giving xiaoyao to yueru and a second later, when xiaoyao and yueru are going for a quest together, she's jealous and also wants to tag along. and when yueru is happy with xiaoyao, she has to put on a long face since she clearly knows that xiaoyao will feel guilty, what a hypocrite! poor yueru, having to put on a happy front eventhought it hurts her so much to see xiaoyao caring for ling'er.

i also dun really like the actress playing ah nu, mygosh her expressions are so exaggerated and she forces herself too hard to be cute and naive such that it ends up making her look silly and dumb instead, and in a very unnatural way.

hu ge and ady are both very good and natural, especially ady. her acting is a total opposite of her role in the outsiders and is so much better thn lyf's eventhough she's not the lead. she manages the spoilt, cheeky, stuborn and strong character of yueru very well. plus her kind, thoughtful and selfless nature makes her character even more lovable. ling'er on the other hand doesnt really appeal to me except for the first few episodes, where she's quite cute. im getting irritated by her now and it may very well get worse as the series progresses. the fact that lyf's acting is still rather stiff, expressionless and unnatural doesnt help too, even her happy and cute self at the beginning looked a little forced, but ive gotta say that she looks very pretty, hope her acting improves as the series progresses.

how i wish that the series had stayed faithful to the original game, then xiaoyao would love yueru more than ling'er(it's the other way round in the series since lyf's the lead) and end up with yueru instead.

Lol, in the series, nobody gets a happy ending, including LYF. In the RPG, Lin Yueru is in a coma at the end of game I and is revived in game II, where it is suggested that she and Li Xiaoyao are married and living together with the baby.

Series was pretty good, much too much talk about 'love' in the character's stories and in the dialogue though, but that's a given. LYF has improved from DGSD, but her character was kinda one-dimensional - just a very sweet, innocent girl, a role she might be typecasted for; even when she was supposed to have matured towards the second half of the series, all that left an impression were the required close-ups and long soulful glances rather than any acting. Well, she's pretty though.
Ady's character seems to appeal to most of the audience, probably because a lot of the comedy and energy in the series were concentrated during her scenes and interaction with Li. Her voice would've been dubbed, right?

i also like Yue Ru much better. Linger always make it everyone feel sorry for her and worry about her. Yue Ru has to face the one she loves love someone else and help them get together... they really chnaged from the original game, also the costumes are not that good..

the actress played yuru is pretty~her name is an yi xuan

ling'er is pretty, cute and all but i just didnt like her character, too weak for my liking, trying to act all heroic and stuff. i remember there was this part she was already weak but still tried to save this evil vampire when she knows the latter will kill her, and wasted all her energy, making xiaoyao and the rest worry for her and stuff. i heard ling'er is very different in the game. i guess if the director had followed the character in the game, i would have probably liked ling'er, cause though lyf's acting iwas still raw, her looks may be able to win u over accomapnied with a nicer character
