I just finished this series and I totally agree with a lot of ya'll, this is on kick-butt series!!!

I got my mom to borrow the tapes from my aunt because I just couldn't wait to see them only once per day. hahah. It took me like 4 days to finish the series and I think I'm having withdrawl symptoms right now

I cried plenty during the 5 days. One most memorable was when Jang Guem's mother and mother's best friend's death *tear*

I also got very frustrated at times. One was towards the end when the King got so arrogant and thought he "knew" Jang Guem better than Man Cheng Hou !! Man Cheng Hou and Jang Guem went through so much....yet the King just thinks that he knew her longer that he could have her!! Gosh, I'm still a bit furious. O'well. The ending was nice

    What a series.

I actually admired the Emperor's ability to love again after what he's been through. And wouldn't go as far as to say that he was arrogant, he just wanted to impress upon the fact that he did know her before (and since he likes her) it would be kind of like trying to show that they had a link before. Bear in mind that he did not know there was anything going on between Jang Geum and Sir Min.

Though I am (of course) a big JG and Sir Min fan, I thought the way the emperor allowed Jang Geum to continue with her work rather than become another concubine was not only a mark of his feelings for her but also his respect for her.

indeed, jang guem's mom and her mentor's death (lady han) are the best sad scenes in the whole series. i find jang guem very tough, and she could stand up and face the truth that her 2 most important ppl were dead.
    respect...

they can't possibly spend more time and money than Chinese productions do on hairstyles. Korean hairstyles are fairly simple compared to Chinese ones. Just big braids wrapped around the head.

but I really did not like these Korean palace ladies hairdos including the Queen and Dowagers' hairdos..it looks terrible..no offence to the koreans though. and I thot the Dowager and Queen's expressions were somewhat limited and they are kind of expressionless. What they do most often is nodding their heads! I am sure Korea has prettier actresses...but on the whole, I do find the casting of most of the youger female roles here except for Chang Jin and Lian Sheng to be not really good-looking people.

I think you won't find Cantonese version of Jewel In The Palace in Malaysia except you order it from Hong Kong(TVB) if it is available for sale.

I thought the series was very slow moving and formulaic - I mean, the first 10 eps were basically focused on kitchen stuff. You could miss a couple episodes and they'd still be doing the same thing. And the eps where the Japanese pirates came, it was so obvious they were Koreans speaking Japanese - the tones were so harsh! Some of the medical theories were just ludicrous. The acting by most of the women were forced and their facial expressions were limited. Just like I find most Korean acting. It's almost as if there's a fixed expression for any given situation. The hairdoes were a complete disaster. I did like the romance between Officer Min and Jang Gaem though. That seems to be the highlight of the story. I'd say it's a good periodic series, but I can't put it at the top of my list. No offence to the fans, and no flaming, please.

no, its ok. I feel the same way too....I can't said its a fantastic series too..acting-wise, i definitley found that the actresses here were not natural, I found the actors to be better. I find that, in general, the Hong Kong actors and actresses are the most natural, acting-wise. and I agree that its the simple love story bet the leads that's making me watch this....though they seemed to be developing so slowly. The other good part of this series is Chang Jin's foster parents, they were great...so funny and cute!
