Does the kid count as repayment? She still owes him big, man. They should've been able to crank out at least a football team in the time they were together. Then again, stress due to leading lives as fugitives may have a detrimental effect on fertility. Plus that little girl is way precocious not to realize what was going on in the bedroom.

    Medical Training:

JG learns that the best way for the poor not to get sick on the island is to use freshwater rather than seawater in their diet. She also learns that the placebos were meant for people with psychological issues, where medicinal herbs would be ineffective. CT is locked up again after attending to the exiled manservants; JG is touched. Later, she is summoned to the courtyard where a court decree orders her to the Imperial Palace. CT again denies the offer, asking the supervising officer to say that she's either sick or dead. JG realizes the only way for her to return to the palace is to be selected as a female medical officer. She tells Sir Min once she decides, and he says that he believes she will be able to find justice for her parents, Lady Han and herself. She kneels and begs CT to take her as apprentice. The other maidservants are angry, but reproached by CT as they are neither as competent nor compassionate as JG, and that her decision is final.

JG is told to memorise the different medical conditions/symptoms related to face color. She tries to practice on the other maidservants but is told off as they are jealous. Sir Min gets everyone under his command to line up for her to practise on. JG thanks him after the exercise, but he says that she's being unfair as she's seen everyone's face color except his. JG looks at him, and even he wavers for a second at JG's gaze. JG reports that he looks red, and that could mean he's having a fever. He says that he is indeed having a fever, then holdd JG's hands gently. JG is embarrassed and runs off to memorize the rest of the medical books she was given earlier, feeling the heat as she goes through the conditions related to having facial redness.

In the palace, the King sees YS playing with the puppy, a tribute from China, and summons YS to his bed the second night. YS plans to tell the King of JG's injustice since she knows that YR was the one who arranged for Hong to have the abalone dish. Lady Min and Cang advise her against it, not that she has a chance anyways. The King doesn't visit her again for the next few years until JG returns from exile.

KY teaches the young palace maids the way Lady Han would to allow them to appreciate the different tastes/textures. Lady Choi is upset, but KY insists, saying that the whole incident would not have happened if they did indeed possess the skills to win the position fair and square. It's a new start for all of them, and they should take the chance to learn what they missed out on before. Lady Choi reminds her that Sir Min would not favor her, that he ran off after JG as soon as she was exiled. KY replies that she would not give up, and that she would become the best kitchen lady through her own skills even though in tears at the reminder. She had already known about Sir Min's transfer since JG's departure.

JG undergoes gruelling training under CT, getting caned on her calves for any mistakes she makes in memorising. She attends to patients, improving quickly. One day, on a home visit to a rich squire's home, CT is appalled to find that the patient had taken advice from another doctor and consumed ginseng, beneficial for his diabetes but detrimental to his health as it clashed with his "heaty" constitution. CT had hoped to change his constitution before using ginseng for his diabetes. The patient is sheepish, and says the doctor said the same thing, but also said that the ginseng used in this case was suitable for his particular constitution. CT is livid and confronts the physician thinking he's a quack out to make a quick buck. He turns out to be Physician Chong from DZX, happy to see JG and learning of her mishap in the palace. He explains that after processing the ginseng a certain way, involving steaming and airdrying, most of the medicinal properties are retained while the toxins are neutralized, and it also changes the nature of the herb so that it's suitable for people with "heaty" constitutions. He himself has the same body type and requires longterm use of ginseng to control his medical condition. He is reluctant to divulge it at first, but on prodding, reveals that he has a terminal illness. That was why he had been drinking heavily at DZX, having given up all hope of finding a cure. JG changed that when she arrived, asking him not to take away her last hope, and her enthusiasm affected him. He has been looking for a cure all over the country ever since. He is happy that JG is learning medicine, seeing her potential firsthand at DZX. However, he is furious when JG reveals that she is learniing medicine to return to the palace and punish all those who had wrongfully accused her mother and Lady Han. He wants her to make a choice or stop practising medicine altogether. CT retorts that she practices medicine with hatred in her heart, and says Chong is no better than she is, using alcohol to drown his own sorrows.

CT's mother was to be presented to the ruler of the time even though she was married. Her mother killed herself rather than be violated against her will. Her father followed suit, angered and humiliated beyond imagination. Her family was wrongfully accused of holding the King in contempt, and their property confiscated. She was brought up by her family maid, and exiled as a maidservant. Had she been a male, she would've been able to distinguish herself in martial arts and punish the wrongdoers, but she was born a female and her only recourse was medicine. She learnt medicine with intention to heal and also to kill, be it acupuncture, herbs or venom. She was trained in the palace but followed her enemy when he was exiled to Cheju after his wrongdoings were exposed. Her enemy is now a manservant who also has the same condition as Physician Chong. She has found a cure for the disease but did not use it on him. She asks Chong if she should save him. He does not answer.

Chong meets with Sir Min, and is still angry that JG is receiving instruction from a woman bearing such great hatred. He thinks that she should not be allowed to practice at all, nor to guide JG. Sir Min says that it's her right to make the decision.

CT's enemy's condition worsens. She goes to see him, only to find Chong there, trying to prevent her from treating him in case she harms him. Chong concedes and lets her attend to him. She applies acupuncture, for a moment almost killing him at a fatal acupoint, but decides to save him. She also gives JG the correct prescription. Chong is relieved. CT is extremely lost and wishes that JG would one day be able to let go of her anger and focus on medicine, the two things she had not been able to do since she was always torn between them. She had liked JG the first time she saw her because of her anger and determination for vengence, and originally wanted JG to fall into the same trap as she did. JG is in a dilemma and does not know what to do. It is a challenge for JG to decide whether to give up her plans to exact revenge and to focus entirely on medicine as a life passion. Sir Min watches from afar as JG's mind is in turmoil at the seaside.

Two years on, JG sits in a freezing cave relearning what she has learnt. Previously, she had misapplied an acupuncture needle on CT and since been unable to apply acupuncture to anyone as CT nearly lost her life in the process. Sir Min is worried about JG losing confidence and talks to CT, who says that she needs the time to punish herself in order to regain her skills. It's up to her to decide when is enough and to overcome her fears.

Sir Min leaves with CT to escort some horses to the mainland, to be sent as tribute to the Imperial Palace, leaving JG behind as the main healthcare provider on the island. JG is very worried. JG's foster father arrives on Cheju island severely seasick. JG is unable to apply acupuncture even though it is a relatively standard procedure for seasickness, instead opting for a slower, less effective treatment. He comes around, happy to be reunited. She hears about YS and how she's having a hard time in the palace not being a favored concubine. JG is again lost. She has yet to make a decision as to whether she will give up her plans for revenge, and is unable to focus on medicine purely based on her passion and talent. She is frustrated that she is stuck in a rut, unable to progress and return to the palace even if she wants to, whether for revenge or for people who love her who are still there.

Meanwhile, the Japanese pirates attack Cheju once again.

    Japanese Pirates:

The Japanese sneak a surprise attack on the military. The main camp officer runs off to hide in the mountains, leaving the commoners defenceless. The Japanese leader is taken ill, and requests that a doctor be found. After some coercion, JG's foster father says that JG is the best physician around. JG says that she cannot treat anyone as she's not yet a physician. She is also not confident of her abilities to apply acupuncture. The Japanese do not believe her, and threaten to kill all that are present in order to make her comply, starting with her uncle. After some deliberation, JG does the acupuncture with apprehension. She succeeds, much to everyone's relief. She sends the other maidservants for some herbs and the packet comes back with a note from Sir Min, who's seen the battle signal from the outlying island where he was supposed to escort the ranch tribute. He first congratulates JG on succeeding, then requests that she reply with vital military information essential to their counterstrike. The Japanese intend to leave the next day, taking with them the soldiers. JG delays them claiming that a herb is missing and send the Japanese out to a nearby farmland to find it. Sir Min launches the counterstrike and succeeds in their capture.

JG and Sir Min sit by a house the same night. Sir Min says that while he was thrilled to hear of her success, he soon realized that with each progress she made in her skills, she is taking yet another step towards the difficult journey that she alone must face. He can no longer assist her when she reaches that stage. Some part of him wishes that she'd remain where she was, making no progress, so that she can stay there right by his side. He then apologizes, saying that looking at her, he understands her pain and sorrow, and the journey she must attempt. She thanks him for being there all the way, from the time she was a palace maid to an exiled maidservant. He has stood by her ideals and talents, and most of all, confirmed her worth as a woman. She knows that the journey ahead is tough, and she is touched by his unconditional support. He holds her hand, and they share a moment in silence.

Sir Min leaves to report the attack to the mainland officer, along with JG's foster father. CT is about to teach JG her specialty in venoms and their uses, when JG is arrested and sent to the mainland to be punished for treason, as she saved the Japanese leader. The renegade officer has submitted a report omitting his own follies and put all the responsibility on her as a spy. Sir Min is furious, and reports to his supervisor in Hanyang. He reaches her just in time to prevent her from being unduly punished. The female imperial medical officers empathize with JG and report this to the Queen. The incident is then reported to the King, who rectifies the situation. JG stays at Sir Min's house while they're at Hanyang. JG's foster mother is upset that she almost leaves without visiting them.

Chong asks JG if she is still adamant about exacting revenge. She says she has not changed her mind. Sir Min assures Chong that JG is not a person who would do harm to achieve her ends. Chong does not tell her of the impending selection trials for female medical officers.

JG hears that Sir Min's supervisor wants him to remain in the capital and she requests for him to stay there for the sake of his future, putting him in a dilemma. He is loathe to leave JG. He says he wants to be wherever he is. JG replies that he will always be there with her, just like Lady Han. She promises to return to the palace eventually. They stand by the lake for some time.

The next day, JG leaves for Cheju with Officer Pak. Sir Min watches as they leave. Along the way, they pass by Lady Han's grave. She wants to seal the grave properly. JG's foster father catches up with them at the grave to pass JG a package. They attempt to seal the grave, but is stopped by a boy who says his family owns the land. He appears to be well-versed in acromancy and astrology, and says that if someone is buried there, that person would be sad and not have anyone to pray to him/her. JG sees that his face color is off and asks about his symptoms. She offers to help him cure it, only to have him think that she wants the cemetery plot in exchange, to which she replies that a doctor should not ask for anything in exchange for medical treatment. He agrees to let her try even though the father objects.

JG tries a dietary approach to get rid of the toxins in the boy's body. She feeds him various beef concoctions. He shows little progress and starts vomitting. The father is furious. The boy insists that she continue. After a few more days, the boy is cured. JG wonders why he knows that she could cure him - he says that he knows that his savior will be coming to look for him, only that he did not know the form or gender. The boy also offers to help relocate Lady Han's grave to a good burial plot. JG is grateful. The father makes mention of the selection trials for female medical officers, assuming JG is there to attend it due to her skills. JG realizes she's almost too late to enroll but rushes there anyways, just in time. Before she leaves, the boy advises her to study the Zhou scriptures, as it will enable her to save many more people.

    Medical Training:

JG arrives at the examination halls just as the door shuts. She's one of the last to get examined. She does well in all events, but when Chong asks her what she would do if her enemy presents to her. Would she save or harm that person? She replies that she has yet to make up her mind. He has a mind to fail her, but she is selected after he reserves judgement on whether she would do harm for the sake of vengeance.

Sir Min is overjoyed that JG can stay in Hanyang. Officer Pak is upset he has to return to Cheju alone. Sir Min offers to transfer him back to the mainland when he has the chance. Sir Min is happy that JG will have a chance to realize her ambition. She says that she no longer wishes to exact vengeance at the expense of all else, that to be a true physician, she has to let go of her anger.

JG does very well in the medical and literary classes, being well read since she was a child. However, Imperial Physician Shin is very prejudiced against JG, making life extremely difficult for her and failing assessments she aced because she cured the boy when she had no qualifications. He thinks that she is too arrogant for her own good, thinks too much of her own limited medical skills when JG has no such intention. JG offers to do all the housework for the interns in order to stay on in the training program. Shin is unappreciative and has full intention of expelling her at the earliest opportunity. Shin is actually blaming himself for being too arrogant, causing the death of his own patient earlier on.

Sir Min attempts to rally the ex-followers of Sir Zhao, including Imperial Physician Shin.

JG's foster parents try to persuade the Choi family to help them supply wine to the palace, only to get rejected. Sir Min arrives and says that they are now allowed to supply wine to part of the palace. They are delighted and dig a hole in front of the Choi residence. Later, Sir Min helps clear out JG's old lodging to prepare for her homecoming. JG's foster mother comments that it's because JG's going to live there that he's doing it. Sir Min is embarrassed and carries on in silence.

Crunchtime comes when another mentor (Lee) sends all of them to entertain high officials in exchange for higher marks. JG is very upset that they have to stand-in as prostitutes, even more so when the other trainees appear to have done it before and not think much of it. Apparently medical trainees were no different than hookers in those times even though the practice has been made illegal for some time. She tearfully contemplates the situation, unwavering in her determination to become a physician, without stooping to that level. It is utterly demeaning. JG and SB are the only ones who do not go and get to start their practicum with Shin. JG attends to a few patients, and realizes that she has been neglecting her history taking skills. She appreciates that Shin was trying to train her to not base treatment merely on her own judgement, but to listen to what the patient is telling her as well. They are given 10 days to diagnose and treat the patients. JG does a great case presentation outlining her own follies in making too many assumptions in the past and initially misdiagnosing the patients based on their symptoms alone, then changed her management plan according to the history later obtained, coupled with a thorough physical examination. Shin also reexamines the class on the usefulness and harmfulness of medicinal herbs and poisonous ones. JG understands that there is no difference between the two as long as they are used in the correct context. Shin is not convinced that she truly understands humility. He says that the more intelligent a person, the easier it is for them to fall into the trap. Deep down he acknowledges her talents as he identifies her faults with his own.

Lee fails JG and SB at the end of the training program, claiming that they were disrespectful and did not follows orders. Shin is upset and fails the rest of the class as he finds that it's unfair to JG and SB, who followed the rules. When the results are announced, Lee is angry, but has no choice since the medical classes are out of his jurisdiction. Shin had originally not allowed the girls who went to the party to attend his class but was overridden by Lee who held higher authority. Shin reports this to Sir Min's superior who apparently has jurisdiction over the medical training. There is a re-examination where JG passes all components with flying colors. He then asks why JG was failed by Shin on two occasions; Shin replies that he thought she was too arrogant for her own good but later saw that she worked hard to correct her flaws. The failures were to be cancelled, but he thought it would be unfair to change marks. Lee says he failed her because of disrespectfulness but doesn't mention why. Shin then says he failed all the other students for not turning up to practicum. Sir Min's superior then realizes Lee sent the girls out as prostitutes and is angry at that. The matter is brought before the King who strips the offender of his post, saying that female medical officers are essential to the treatment of womenfolk of the country, as well as his own family members who male physicians cannot attend to. They should not be treated as sex objects. Sir Min heaves a sigh of relief when he hears of the decision, then smiles boyishly to himself to see his sweetheart is safe.

JG is allowed to stay on in the Imperial Physician's College seeing she topped the class along with SB. JG teases Sir Min at first when she comes out of the training grounds, feigning an expression of disappointment, then shows him her Hanbu - the token that allows her entry/exit from the palace. Sir Min is overjoyed. They walk together. Sir Min asks of JG is happy, she says she is sad. When he asks if she is sad, she says that she is happy. He then asks if she is scared, she says she is apprehensive, and when he asks if she is apprehensive, she replies that she is scared. They both realize that JG has an arduous journey in front of her.

CT had come specially to inform JG of the selection trials but doesn't arrive till near the end of the training program. She stays on to open a clinic in Hanyang. She also advises JG to give up hope of being an outstanding physician - she knows her well enough to understand her ambition. Life in the palace is very restrictive.

Sir Min is worried that life as a medical officer would be drastically different than a palace maid. A medical officer's status is way below that of a palace maid. JG tells Sir Min that there is only one way that she can achieve her goals, and her only recourse is to tolerate all that comes her way before she can redress the wrongs done to her.

Same here. Those are my favourite parts as well. I like it when he says he's not teasing her, and now she understands all the agony he had gone through in the past. I think the romance is tripled by the fact that palace maids are not supposed to fall in love.

He should have married her when they're on Jeju Island. I can't help but think why Sir Min thinks it's safe to wait when they're so many people after CG.

    The Palace:

JG and SB enter as the lowest class of female medical officers, attached to different mentors for training in different disciplines. They are to take care of the royal womenfolk and also palace maids. These tasks will be taken as assessments. Their first task is to attend to some palace maids, one of whom is particularly obnoxious and merely wants them for facial treatments. JG complies while SB is indignant. JG says that at times like these they can only take it in their stride as that is the reality of their status. She reveals that she too was once a palace maid. SB looks on in silence as JG leaves to prepare the treatments. JG also washes and massages the palace maid's feet. She quickly wins over the palace maids with her remedies, tailoring treatments for their particular facial problems. SB asks why she has returned knowing this would be the case. JG does not answer.

The Queen miscarries. A meeting is called to discuss the next course of action. Both medical and kitchen personnel are present. KY and JG mutually recognize each other. KY is appalled to see JG, while JG is surprised to see that KY has become the most senior kitchen lady. They are both shaken by each other's appearance.

JG attends to the Queen and advises the her to stay calm and breathe properly. Lady Choi enter as the palace lady in charge of all kitchen ladies/maids. She is shocked to see JG as well, and asks JG what she's doing there even while the Queen is in extreme distress. The miscarriage is part of Lady Choi's ploy.

KY asks to see JG, to confirm that it is indeed JG. JG congratulates her for making most senior kitchen lady and asks if she is content to have gotten the post through scheming and manipulation. KY says that JG cannot stay in the palace. JG leaves in silence. Lady Choi also threatens her as she meets her outside the kitchen. The Choi females are very uneasy about her return. Lady Choi comments that women in JG's family are too obstinate for their own good. If you feed one poison, she sends her daughter back. If you exile one as a maidservant, she returns as a medical officer. She schemes with her brother to get rid of her once again. JG sees her conferring with one of the Imperial Physicians, the same food physician who pointed the finger at the kitchens during the sulfur duck incident.

JG then learns that Lady Min has become YS's lady in waiting. She looks for her, only to find her in charge of purifying water as YS is not a favored concubine. The reunion is tearful. Lady Min then relates that YS was summoned to the King's bed once after he spotted her playing with the puppy, but never again, probably due to Lady Choi's interference. Lady Min and Cang have been sent all over the place in charge of menial chores ever since. They take her to see YS, who's praying to Lady Chong by the miso urns, for JG's safety and for their reunion someday, misunderstood that she is praying for the King's favor by others. JG is extremely touched. They embrace in tears. YS takes her to the kitchen to order that some food be brought up, only to get snubbed by even the kitchen maids. JG is sad at all her best friend has had to go through for her sake. YS blames herself for not being gentle enough to win the King's continued favor, to be unable to redress JG's grievances. YS tells JG of the abalone dish that Hong was made to consume before she had the sulfur duck. She advises JG to be extremely careful.

Sir Min's faction attempts to get those who were under Lord Zhao [Cho] (main target of sulfur duck incident) reinstated, to be met with opposition from Lord O's faction. They present the case of pirate invasions against Chosun. The King accepts their case. Lord O wants to get rid of Sir Min, seeing him as an extreme threat against his own ends. Sir Min arranges to meet JG along with her foster father after she retires from the palace so as to prepare the sulfur duck tonic. He arranges for Lord O and Lord Choi to dine at his place, issuing veiled threats as they know the truth of the sulfur duck incident. Sir Min's superior warns Lord O to support their bid to prevent further incursions from the pirates or nomads. Sir Min also sees Lord Choi in private, warning him that if he tries anything to incriminate JG, he will take it as the start of a war to reveal the whole truth. He tells KY that these are the consequences of letting Sir Min off so many years ago.

KY sees Sir Min. He congratulates her her making most senior kitchen lady and apologizes that she has to hear the unhappy news about their power struggle before he has the chance to do so. KY wants JG to do reflexology on her. JG advises her to let things go.

Lady Choi schemes to get JG banished through the Imperial Physician. JG is assigned to the incompetent (but later found to be kindhearted) Cho, who blames them for misdiagnosing and misapplying acupuncture when he makes mistakes. They are nearly banished to a public medical facility outside the palace but the matter is delayed due to the chaos arising from the Queen's miscarriage.

YY, the female medical officer in charge of the Queen's health is summoned during the miscarriage. Only one fetus and one placenta is seen miscarried. The Queen does not recover from the sequelae even with appropriate treatment and falls into a coma. JG attends to the Queen and feels that the pulse profile is not as YY described. She does extensive research to find the right treatment. JG's diagnosis is different than YY's, saying that the Queen was expecting twins and there is an existing dead fetus in her womb causing symptoms of shock, instead of suffering from anemia, bereavement or blood clots as originally thought, but she meets with extreme resistance in putting forward her opinion and correct treatment. YY also misses out on physical signs that could differentiate between diagnoses. SB reports JG's differential to Shin. YY is a scheming woman who puts her own interests above all, but pretends to accept different opinions. She resents JG for daring to put forward a differential diagnosis to her own, and outwardly defends JG when the other female medical officers rebuke her. The Imperial Physicians are not convinced initially as there has been no history of multiple gestations in the royal family. It is only when YY's acupuncture causes extreme discomfort to the Queen that extra investigation was carried out and JG's differential pulse profile further looked into. Shin defends JG saying that even experienced physicians can miss pulse profiles, and even the inexperienced may do it right as there is a lack of assumption which may cloud judgement. YY and JG are told to take the Queen's pulse again, coming up with respective differing opinions at the end. Chong gets to decide the treatment being the treating physician, and uses herbs meant to expel the fetus on the Queen. JG is also ordered to perform the acupuncture, at YY's insistence as she is unable to confirm her pulse findings.

Lady Min berates JG for not learning to keep her mouth shut after the sulfur duck incident that almost cost her life. SB replies that as medical officers their duty is to help treat the patient regardless and speak up as long as it's right, much to her chargrin. YS prays to Lady Chong again for JG's safety, threatening not to pray to her again if JG comes to any harm. YR expects JG to be banished for making a mistake, but KY says not to underestimate her detemination.

Sir Min learns of JG's situation through her uncle and is extremely worried for her. The Queen shows no improvement for days, until JG is almost punished before the second fetus is expelled. YY asks to be transferred to the public medical facility for further training and pretends to bow down to JG, but show her true colors as she warns JG not to try to take her position. The other female medical officers are biased against JG.

YY sees Lady Choi conferring with the main Imperial Physician and sees KY, offering her allegiance. She claims to want to present JG to KY as a show of loyalty.
