Smile A Wuxia Forum Annual Tradition: the ROBOTECH/CONDOR TRILOGY PARALLELS

A little something I've posted annually for several years now.

PARALLELS BETWEEN THE CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY AND ROBOTECH

Hi, there fellow Jin Yong fans! I don’t know how many of you grew up in the U.S. during the 1980s, but if you did, there’s a chance you’re familiar with an anime (Japanese animation) series that was adapted into English under the title of ROBOTECH.

For those of you unfamiliar with ROBOTECH, it is a sci-fi/space war epic adapted from three very popular anime of the early 1980s: SUPERDIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS, SUPER DIMENSION CAVALARY SOUTHERN CROSS, and GENESIS CLIMBER MOSPEADA. Basically, an American producer combined the three, originally unrelated (but stylistically similar) stories into a multi-generational epic about Earth’s resistance against three different waves of high-tech alien invaders, with MACROSS being the first generation, SOUTHERN CROSS being the second generation taking place 15 years later , and MOSPEADA being the third generation taking place some time after that.

Being a fan of both Jin Yong’s CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY and ROBOTECH, I’ve found a striking number of parallels between the two stories. Here’s a summary of them:

1a). The CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY is a three-part epic concerning three generations of Chinese martial artists defending their homeland against foreign invasion.

1b). ROBOTECH is a three-part epic concerning three generations of Earthlings defending their home planet against alien invasion.

2a). LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES involves a three-way military struggle between the Sung Empire, the Jin Empire, and the Mongol Empire. The Jin Empire was the initial threat against the Sung, but the Mongols eventually became the greater threat and OCCUPIED China during the third part of the trilogy.

2b). ROBOTECH involves a three-way military struggle between the Earth, the Robotech Masters (and Zentraedi Warriors), and the Invid. The Zentraedi/Robotech Masters were the initial threat against Earth, but the Invid eventually became the greater threat and OCCUPIED Earth during the third part of the trilogy.

3a). The main love story of the first generation of the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY (LEGENDS OF THE CONDOR HEROES) involves a love triangle between Gwok Jing, Wong Yung, and the Mongol Princess Wah Jung. A somewhat slow-witted, but noble and responsible hero (Gwok Jing) eventually mates with the cunning and resourceful girl (Wong Yung).

3b). The main love story of the first generation of ROBOTECH (MACROSS) involves a love triangle between Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, and Lin Minmay. A somewhat slow-witted, but noble and responsible hero (Rick Hunter) eventually mates with the cunning and resourceful girl (Lisa Hayes).

4a). In LEGENDS OF THE CONDOR HEROES, Wong Yung’s father (East Wicked) and teacher (Hung 7 Gung) are good friends and two of the world’s most powerful men. Wong Yung loves and is loved by both father-figures, but is better understood and gets along better with Hung 7 Gung.

4b). In ROBOTECH (MACROSS), Lisa Hayes’ father (Admiral Hayes) and commanding officer (Admiral Gloval) are good friends and two of the world’s most powerful men. Lisa loves and is loved by both father-figures, but is better understood and gets along better with Admiral Gloval.

5a). Hung 7 Gung named Wong Yung his successor as leader of the Beggar’s Union.

5b). Admiral Gloval named Lisa Hayes his successor as Captain of the SDF-1.

6a). In LEGENDS OF THE CONDOR HEROES, Gwok Jing and Wong Yung become heroes of the struggle against the Jin Empire and in the sequel, are respected veterans in the war against the Mongols.

6b). In ROBOTECH, Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes become heroes of the struggle against the Zentraedi and in the sequel, are respected veterans in the war against the Invid.

7a). In the CONDOR TRILOGY, everyone is looking for the secret of the 9 Yum Jen Ging and the Ngok Fei’s War Tactics Manual to gain power and rule the world.

7b). In ROBOTECH, everyone is looking for the secret of Protoculture to gain power and rule the Universe.

8a). Towards the end of the first generation of ROBOTECH (THE MACROSS SAGA), the war with the Zentraedi winds down and the war with the Robotech Masters is imminent, but the war is not actually fought until the second generation (SOUTHERN CROSS)

8b). Towards the end of the first generation of the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY (LOCH), the war with the Jin Empire winds down the war against the Mongols is imminent, but the war is not actually fought until the second generation (ROCH).

9a). Zentraedi defect to Earth side to help Terrans fight Robotech Masters.

9b). Khitan (Yeh Lut Chai) and Juchen (Yeun Nan Ping) help Chinese fight the Mongols.

10a). The main hero (Yeung Gor) of the second generation of the CONDOR TRILOGY (RETURN OF THE CONDOR HEROES) is the direct descendent of a major supporting character and rival (Yeung Hong) of the hero of the first generation. Yeung Gor frequently rebels against the values of the previous generation, challenging his teachers in the Chuen Jen Taoist Sect.

10b). The main hero (Dana Sterling) of the second generation of ROBOTECH (SOUTHERN CROSS) is the direct descendent of the a major supporting character and rival (Max Sterling) of the hero of the first generation. Dana Sterling frequently rebels against the values of the previous generation, challenging her superior officers in the Southern Cross Defense Force.

11a). The second generation of the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY ends with the Mongol invasion of China temporarily halted, although by the beginning of the third generation China is occupied by the Mongol invaders.

11b). The second generation of ROBOTECH ends with the Robotech Masters invasion of Earth halted, although by the beginning of the third generation Earth is occupied by Invid invaders.

12a). The LEGENDS OF THE CONDOR HEROES and RETURN OF THE CONDOR HEROES involve a continuing cast of characters from two families (Gwok and Yeung), whereas HEAVEN SWORD AND DRAGON SABRE involves a new cast that is only very loosely related to the earlier characters.

12b). MACROSS and SOUTHERN CROSS involve a continuing cast of characters from two families (Hunter and Sterling), whereas MOSPEADA involves a new cast that is only very loosely related to the earlier characters.

13a). Little Dragon Girl is like a “sin lui” (divine woman) in RETURN OF THE CONDOR HEROES . . . she is initially aloof and cold, but learns to love Yeung Gor.

13b). Musica, Mistress of the Cosmic Harp, has the same qualities in SOUTHERN CROSS . . . she is initially aloof and cold, but learns to love Bowie Grant (also a descendant of a hero from the first generation, Claudia Grant).

14a). The first two parts of the CONDOR TRILOGY share “CONDOR” as part of their titles, whereas the third part has no mention of “Condor” in the title.

14b). The first two parts of ROBOTECH share “Super Dimensional” as part of their titles, whereas the third part has no mention of “Super Dimensional” in the title.

15a). HEAVEN SWORD AND DRAGON SABRE is centered around a ragtag group of rebels seeking to liberate China from Mongol control.

15b). MOSPEADA is centered around a ragtag group of rebels seeking to liberate Earth from Invid control.

Default A new RT/CONDOR HEROES parallel for 2004!

Just thought of a new one!

31a). Yeung Hong and Muk Lim Chi, the second main couple of LOCH, first met and fell in love after Yeung Hong defeated Muk Lim Chi in a martial arts contest. Although the two were in love, they were on opposite sides (Yeung Hong - Jin; Muk Lim Chi - Sung). Their child (Yeung Gor) became the main character of ROCH. Because of who his father was, Yeung Gor was not always trusted by others during ROCH.

31b). Max Sterling and Miriya Parino, the second main couple of ROBOTECH: THE MACROSS SAGA, first met and fell in love after Max defeated Miriya in battle. Although the two were in love, they were on opposite sides (Max - Earth; Miriya - Zentraedi). Their child (Dana Sterling) became the main character of ROBOTECH: MASTERS. Because of who her mother was, Dana was not always trusted by others during MASTERS.

    Default More! :)

32a). In LOCH, Wong Yung is separated from Gwok Jing for a time when her father East Heretic Wong Yerk See takes her back to Peach Blossom Island and keeps her there. NOTE: Wong Yung was raised by her father; her mother died when she was born.

32b). In ROBOTECH: THE MACROSS SAGA, Lisa Hayes is separated from Rick Hunter for a time when her father Admiral Hayes takes her back to United Earth Forces Headquarters at Alaska Base and keeps her there. NOTE: Lisa was raised by her father; her mother died when she was a little girl.

Hehe, I'm glad the traditions don't die. Too tired to read through it all again and comment yet though (besides I only liked Macross).

I love Robotech, I got the Macross version of that which is remastered for an arm and a leg, well worth it. The first 36 episodes of that is magnificient.

Pitty Robotech and Macross is out on DVD after a long wait, now we have to wait to see if Condor Heroes will ever come out on DVD.

I'd love to see Yung Guo in a Veritech.

It's always about a man and a woman and love.

maybe that was Rick Hunter playing him when Rick had Minmay in one hand and lost the other hand in his Veritech while holding her before Roy came by to save the day.

This has got to be the weirdest thread I've seen here, but weird in a good way.

Well, of course Jin Yong couldn't have copied: all his novels were completed about twenty years before ROBOTECH came into being.

It's very remotely possible that the folks who put ROBOTECH together might have been influenced by Jin Yong, but it's extremely unlikely because they were all Westerners who haven't been known to be fans of wuxia. Perhaps the original Japanese producers of MACROSS, SOUTHERN CROSS, and MOSPEADA (the three Japanese anime series that were adapted into ROBOTECH) were influenced by Jin Yong, but those sagas, in their original Japanese form, were not meant to be one storyline together.

And yet oddly, when the Americans combined them together, they had something that paralleled the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY closely in many ways.

    There's more:

31a). East Heretic Wong Yerk See was a widower whose wife died shortly after their daughter (Wong Yung) was born. He missed his wife dearly, and always wished that his wife could have known their daughter better.

31b). Admiral Hayes was a widower whose wife died shortly after their daughter (Lisa Hayes) was born. He missed his wife dearly, and always wished that his wife could have known their daughter better.

32a). At one point in LOCH, Wong Yung left Gwok Jing and North Beggar Hung 7 Gung to be with her father at his home on Peach Blossom Island. After she went to Peach Blossom Island, however, her father Wong Yerk See would not let her leave to rejoin her friends. Eventually, Gwok Jing and Hung 7 Gung came to "save" her from the island.

32b). At one point in ROBOTECH, Lisa Hayes left Rick Hunter and Admiral Gloval to be with her father at his headquarters at Alaska Base. After she went to Alaska Base, her father Admiral Hayes would not let her leave to rejoin her friends. Eventually, Rick Hunter and Admiral Gloval came to save her from Alaska Base.

33a). Yeung Hong and Muk Lim Chi first met and became betrothed through a "betrothal duel," in which Yeung Hong prevailed. Eventually, he did marry Muk Lim Chi, despite the fact that they were on opposite sides, and their child, Yeung Gor, became the main hero of the next generation.

33b). Max Sterling and Miriya Parino first met in combat, and became betrothed after Max defeated Miriya in battle three times. Eventually, Max did marry Miriya, despite the fact that they were on opposites sides. Their child, Dana Sterling, became the main heroine of the next generation.

It's scary how closely the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY and ROBOTECH line up...

34a). The Gwok and Yeung families, who had loyally fought against the Jin Empire to protect the Sung Dynasty, were driven out of their country to the hinterlands by elements of a corrupt and cowardly Sung government.

34b). The citizens of Macross City and the troops of the Robotech Defense Force, who had loyally fought against the Zentraedi to defend Earth, were driven off their home planet by a corrupt and cowardly United Earth Government.

During San Diego Comic-Con, I had a chance to talk with Carl Macek, the director who combined and edited MACROSS, SOUTHERN CROSS, and MOSPEADA into ROBOTECH. When I told him about the parallels between his series and Jin Yong's CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY, he was blown away...even though he's never heard of Jin Yong or his stories before (he does know what wuxia is, although he's more familiar with it via movies rather than literature).

^ Frickin lucky Ken. I do find it quite interesting how they were able to adapt and combine 3 different animes into the Robotech that we know.

I love Robotech. Well....the Macross saga, at least. Last year's Fanime had Mari Iijima, who did both the singing and speaking voices in both Japanese and English for Minmay, as a guest performer. Too bad I couldn't go. =\

And somehow come up with something that had three-dozen parallels with the CONDOR HEROES TRILOGY.

I've gone to see Mari perform a few times at an L.A. club called Genghis Cohen's, where she's something of a regular. My friend Don knows Mari somewhat well. Mari had trouble with the tire of her VW Bug after one performance, and Don and I helped her to replace the tire so that she could get home.

So yeah, I helped Minmay fix her car's tire.

Wow the similarities is quite staggering... I guess chalk it up to a super coincidence. Perhaps trilogies that spans several generations are bound to have similar plot structures and themes. But the simlarities are very staggering. If it's not coincidence (what are the odds eh??? 1%? ), my best theory is that Jin Yong and the anime creators dipped into the same area in the Collective Unconscious
