Default Question about relationship of these characters from LOCH and ROCH

I re-watched LOCH recently and when I saw the part about the wedding of Luk Goon Ying and Ching (I don't know her name), I remembered that the family that was killed by Lee Mok Sau also had the surname Luk. I know that Luk Goon Ying and his wife made a brief appearance later in ROCH, but Luk Mo Seung also had a cousin named Ching Ying, are they related in anyway to Luk Goon Ying and his wife?

I'm not sure but i think Luk Gwoon Ying was the son of one of East Heretics disciples. The wife was the disciple of the female Quanzhen priest.

Luk Gwoon Ying was played by Stephen Chow's sidekick Ng Man Tat in TVB 80s version.

    Default Two guys named Luk

Luk Gwoon Ying (Lu Guanying) is the son of Lu Chengfeng, the disciple of Huang Yaoshi who lives on the shores of Lake Tai. He married Cheng Youjia, the disciple of Sun Bu'er who is the only female disciple in Quanzhen Sect. --- see LOCH.

Luk Lap Teng (Lu Liding) is the brother of Lu Zhanyuan (Luk Chan Yuen), the guy who sent Li Mochou on a murderous rampage. Since Lu Zhanyuan is dead, Li Mouchou takes her anger out on Lu Liding. --- see ROCH.

Things are a bit confusing because Lu Luding's wife has a niece called Cheng Ying, who is her dead sister's daughter. So, somehow, it is easy to conclude that these two Lu families are related when they actually are not.

Somewhere in the beginning of the ROCH novel (2nd ed, 1995), it says that the two Lu families are not related, but they are equally well-known in Jiangnan.

Jin Yong was stretching all kinds of plausbility here by having *two* unrelated sets of Luk and Ching families being prominent in Gong Nam during the same time period.

Default More guys named Lu ...

"Lu" [陆] must be one of JY's favourite surnames. There's Lu Feiqing (The Book and the Sword, with a reappearance in Other Tales of the Flying Fox); Lu Chengfeng and Lu Guanying (LOCH); Lu Zhanyuan, Lu Liding and Lu Wushuang (ROCH); Lu Tianshu (Mnemonic of the Linked Cities); Lu Dayou (XAJH); Luding Ji ... just joking! Anyway, that's 5 books out of 15 (discounting Lu Feiqing's reappearance), or a third!

The other surname that comes close is "Li" [李]. There's Li Kexiu and Li Yuanzhi (The Book and the Sword, with a reappearance in Other Tales of the Flying Fox); Li Mochou (ROCH); Li Tianyuan (HSDS, Yin Tianzheng's brother-at-arms); and Li Qiushui (DGSD). If Li Si (Xiake Xing, which is not a real "name" in the first place) is added, "Li" would emerged on par with "Lu" with 33% each.

As for "Cheng" [程], it is found in LOCH (Cheng Youjia), ROCH (Cheng Ying) and Other Tales of the Flying Fox (Cheng Lingshu). It is comparable to "Ding" [丁] in frequency of occurrence. There's the infamous Ding Chunqiu (DGSD); Ding Dian (Linked Cities); Ding Busan, Ding Busi and Ding Dang (Xiake Xing).

JY seems to like "Yang" [杨] too, but this appears to be mostly a family-thing limited to the Condor Trilogy, i.e. Yang Tiexin and Yang Kang (LOCH), Yang Guo (ROCH) and the Lady Yang in Yellow (HSDS). Then, there's Yang Xiao and Yang Buhui (HSDS). The 33rd leader of the Ming Sect, Yang Dingtian, was originally a "Yang Guo" and "Yang Xiao" type of "Yang", before JY changed it to the "9-Yang" type [阳]. It would have been a bit confusing if he didn't do that.

So far I understand from ROCH (1st edition) Cheng Ying is the daughter of Lu Zhanyuan. Probably her surname is changed on purpose for 'security' reasons, to put Li Mochou on a false track.

Very interesting! I wonder why Cheng Ying then became Lu Liding's wife's niece in the 2nd ed. It would have created all sorts of possibilities for a more in-depth tale if Cheng Ying remained the daughter of Lu Zhanyuan.

Do you know if Cheng Ying's identity as Lu Zhanyuan's daughter in the 1st edition had any impact on the story? Because in the 2nd ed, she did not really tangle with Li Mochou in a big way, except in a few situations relating to Lu Wushuang and/or Yang Guo.
