Default is Cinema at its best when dark, pessimistic, and depressing?

Woody Allen (Director: Annie Hall, Manhattan, Deconstructing Harry) once said: "If my film makes one more person feel miserable, I'll feel I've done my job."

Do you wish more OR less directors feel the same way as Mr. Allen? i.e. do you wish more directors would make movies that make you miserable, or do you wish less directors would make movies that make you miserable?

I'd prefer there are more directors with a good, healthy sense of wit which make movies that people laugh for 5 seconds and think for 5 minutes.

Life is already miserable. I don't need another movie to remind me of that.
