Bao du xi shu, or bao duk si shue in Cantonese.

    The second one would be

I think what Yeung Gor meant was idioms, as in the definite meaning is not what it seems. So Si Dao Lin Tou automatically would not count. Anyway, what's smelly little self? Chou Xiao Zi?

Here are some from the top of my head. Try and give the Mandarin or Cantonese translation.

    Remove Mountain Shift The Sea

    Open Door To View Mountain

Blood in mouth blow out on people

    Heated Fire Pure Green

    Lower Wind

No tooth that's hard to forget

    Ice Clear Pure Gem

    Collect Mud Bring Water

Figure the next interlinked phrase: -

    Nobleman’s single word…

Go to hot water tread on fire…

    One mountain still has…

    Release tiger back to mountain…

    Easy.

I'm assuming there's a disclaimer that this statement only applies to monks in Wuxia novels but then again I have had absolutely no contact with actual monks so I wouldn't know if most actual monks really weren't just practitioners of martial arts who take things personally.

That's a good one! It's part-translation, and part-transliteration. Makes it more challenging for the listener/reader.

One of my favourite sayings. Try this English approximation: Indigo comes from blue, triumphing over blue.

Hmm, I guess what Yeung Gor meant was typical sayings in Wuxia, right?

    That would be:

Wen wu di yi, wu wu di er = In the civil arts there is no first place, while in the martial arts there's no such thing as second best.

Meaning that in the community of scholars, no one would claim to be "the best". But in the martial arts community, everybody wants to be the best.

Anyway, in the Jin Yong novel Yuan Yang Dao, there's a character named Zhou Weixin. He is like a walking encyclopedeia of Wuxia sayings...

Yeah, he was funny all right! He seemed to precede his response to a situation with a saying almost all the time!

This would be "cheng chut yu lam, seng u lam"

i really don't get how the "indigo" is better than blue though. I know what this saying is used for but just never got the meaning behind it....

Yes. That was what sunnyshow brought up in an earlier post in Mandarin pinyin, before asking for the English translation or approximation.

Indigo is a natural blue dye obtained from the indigo plant (genus Indigofera). To dye fabrics, indigo is prepared in a reduced form which is yellow and water soluble. The fabric is then immersed in this solution to pick up the dyeing chemicals. When the indigo is exposed to air (left to dry outside) it oxidises to a deep dark blue and becomes totally insoluble. (Dyeing process: courtesy of Chemistry Dept website of Edinburgh University).

I guess it is this stability (totally insoluble) that the saying talks about: that the product of the plant (the colour "indigo") is better than the plant itself (the colour "blue").
