Thread: Baseball!

Ok, I didn't pay attention to baseball in a while and what happens? Craziness!

A's in first place for the Wild Card ahead of the Yanks and just 2 games behind the Angels?!?!?! Billy Beane is my daddy.

Raphael Palmeiro tests positive for steroids. He can kiss his HOF plaque goodbye. And it turns out that Canseco might have at least somewhat right. I figured Palmeiro was the least likely person among the ones he named to be actually using. But then again Palmeiro's career did take off the year Canseco joined the Rangers (for you conspiracy fans out there, so did Pudge's and Juan Gone's).

And oh yeah, Flyingfox, I still don't agree with your point but that seems mute now. I'd much MUCH rather discuss Palmeiro and A's than Dustin Mohr.

No surprise about Palmstero. I didn't buy his Congress testimony for a minute.

Canseco is not a good guy, but he likely isn't lying about the people he named. Pudge was probably on something when he was hitting 20+ jacks per year. He is probably off now, as evident by his physique and decreased power.

I am just glad Bret Boone has hit the skids. He's one of those guys that I was convinced was juiced. He was never as good as he played starting from 2001, and now he is nothing. His downfall has been just as sudden and unnatural as his rise. I don't think anyone will prove that he was juiced, but if it walks and talks like a duck...

    Moin,
When talking short term, as in one single game, the law of averages clearly does not override more palpable factors like park factor, opposing pitcher, weather, etc. If you truly feel otherwise, then sadly you do not know much about baseball.

I called out Boone during his "breakout season" not so long ago. I never thought he was legit (especially once one takes a look at Aaron). As for Palmeiro, did you hear? The steroid he tested positive for was the same one that Ben Johnson got busted for.

I seriously don't want to talk about that anymore. That's my "field" and I've had it just taking exams on it. I don't want to have it come up when discussing something like baseball. I seriously regret ever getting involved.

Fine with me. You brought it up. I buy into the Law of Averages too, but you can't use the Law of Average to predict one game performance. I am sure you would if you could.

Funny thing about Bret Boone, Steroids, and the Law of Averages, since both have been brought up. Back in 2001 in Bret Boone's juiced-aided breakout season, my former boss asked me for fantasy baseball input about Boone. At this time, I hadn't heard about the prevalence of steroid abuse in baseball, and I hadn't seen Boone play that year since I follow the Mariners (or else I would have seen the increased muscles), so I told her confidently that since Boone was hitting so much better than his career norms that his numbers were surely going to come down toward his career norms of about .260 with moderate power in the 2nd half. For the longest time after that, she would not believe anything I had to say about baseball, she would always bring up Boone to counterargue about baseball.

Me: "I don't think the Mets shoulda taken on Mo Vaughn's contract."
Her: "Yeah but you said no way Boone would keep it up."

Outside of Boone, now in retrospective, one year wonders that I also felt could not keep it up must have been juiced too. Brady Anderson, Jay Bell, Luis Gonzalez, etc. (In Gonzalez's case, he's a good hitter, but that one year when he hit around 60 had to have been because of roids)

Anyway, Palmstero should ask the Giambino if he can borrow G's "nutritionist" cuz whatever the Giambino is on now, it's not detectable under current MLB drug tests.

It's a shame, now if guys have great years, you have to wonder if it is for real or not.

Ok, fine, I seriously regret ever bringing it up.

Speaking of Giambi being "on", here's something that someone wrote about a month ago:

    http://www.sportspickle.com/features...13-giambi.html

I usually don't buy into conspiracy theories, but it's always a bit wacky to go back and see that the breakout years match. As for Luis Gonzalez, the man has always been better than his numbers because he played in the freaking Astrodome. After he got to Arizona, he was generally a .315/30/110 guy, that one year was kind of freakish in that he hit 26 higher than his next highest career total.

Also one last note, Palmeiro supposedly got caught with drugs he took in May. Palmeiro was in a miserable slump at the start of the season and it lasted all through April, he batted only .247 and had 1 HR and 7 RBIs, despite the fact that the O's were off to a great start offensively. Just interesting thing to note.

Can any tell me what's happening with my Cubbies!!??!! Perhaps the curse is real? It seems like none of them can hit a ball at all. I haven't seen them hit any home run for more than two weeks!

Good thing I'm out of the city, state, and country right now so I'm not directly exposed to the Cubbies' suck...er...lack of greatness. There's always next year?

The Cubs are amazing. They have all this talent, and this year D Lee is a Triple Crown threat, and STILL they stink. It's kinda funny. I think Dusty Baker is gonna run C Zambrano onto the surgeon's table pretty soon. Good ole Dusty don't care 'bout no sissy pitch counts! Hahaha.

Back to Palmstero, I find it hard to believe that he is so brazen as to use steroids soon after he wagged his finger at Congress. Perhaps he had already been tested this year and figured he wouldn't be tested again so he resumed using? Or, was he so desperate to reach 3,000 hits that he was willing to risk his reputation?

Conan O'Brien had a doctored picture of Canseco and Palmstero in the locker room and Palmstero sitting on Canseco's GIANT syringe "by mistake" as a possible explanation how P could have unintentionally used roids. It was hilarious.

I think they need to clean up the whole team just like what the White soxs did last year. The Cubs always stint at the end of the year. Our bull pen sucks. That's why Dusty doesn't mind two digit pitch counts. He NEVER sits D Lee unless he really had to. That's why he isn't as productive as the beginning of the season.
We really have mental and chemistry problem right now!

btw, God I can't believe that K. Roger will pitch tomorrow! How come they let him free!

btw, did anybody see what happened to the Soxs and the Yankees game? A fan just fell over the railing into the foul ball net! Wow! that's new. Glad that he isn't Cubbies fan, or else he would........

Dusty is a fairly good manager when it comes to bringing out the best in players, but tactically he's clueless. It's like NBA GMs, it can't be THIS hard to find people who can work a locker room and strategize can it?

To be fair, not many contenders could be doing well if their 2 aces, 2nd best hitter, and closer have all been out for extended time due to injury.

Back to Palmstero, I find it hard to believe that he is so brazen as to use steroids soon after he wagged his finger at Congress. Well, seeing as how the supposed steroid that Palmeiro tested positive for was Winstral, which was the same thing that Ben Johnson was busted for, and which could NOT possibly be in any legal supplements, AND was precisely the steroid that Canseco claimed he had injected into Palmeiro in his book.....

There isn't too many ways for Palmeiro to explain his way out of this one. Maybe they were in Viagra.

Lastly, Neuron, the A's and Angels are in a dead heat for the AL West, so whichever team that isn't leading the Division will be the Wild Card leader (right now the Angels are 1 game ahead of the A's).

The image of baseball as a sport just gets worse and worse. It's difficult for Selig to be tough on the players because that union is so strong. Fehr and Orza don't care about right and wrong, they just care about protecting their clients. Typical lawyers haha.

Rogers returning so soon is a joke. The guy is a gutless d***. New Yorkers who saw him as a Yankee and a Met know all about it.

In other baseball scandals, Derek Lowe has been bedding the team's beat reporter. Mrs. Lowe made a fuss, and now the reporter is relieved of her duties. The only reason why stories like this don't happen too often is because beat reporters are usually overweight dudes in their 40's haha, not attractive females.

Makes me wonder if Suzynn Waltman has ever had a fling with Yankee players. She sure does worship them a lot...

Dusty doesn't like young players. If I had a couple of youngsters with great promise, I wouldn't want Dusty as the manager. God forbid he was managing the Mets.

Lou Pinella is another one who is good at ruining careers and has no patience for young players. One time this year he left a hapless reliever in the game in the midst of a 13 run inning (vs. Yanks). I THINK the reliever (may have been Travis Harper) was charged 9 of the 13, but he should have been out long before the digits started piling up. Lou was pissed at blowing the lead, so he took it out on the RP.

Flyingfox2002..from the posts I read, I assume you are a Mets fan. I think the Mets and the Astros have a really good chance to win NL wild card this year (Jealous!! ) Oh well~ I was always jealous whenever I saw any team with stolen bases again and agian in the same inning. (Like Mets do) I know my Cubbies can't do that. Watching teams like the Cards, the Marlines and the Mets is always fun, they always do something unexpected. I saw one of the GREATEST trick plays today with the Marlines. When Mike Lowe pulled a fast one and held on to the ball even though the play isn't over yet. He tagged a runner out at the 3rd base and the WHOLE was in on it!!! Wow! It's soooooooooo... amazing!

Yeah, Selig gets a bad rap alot. Alot of people are going about saying Selig was "wrong" for being "judge and jury" in the Rogers incident. Hello!! David Stern and Artest anyone?

We (read: I) deman pictures of Mrs. Lowe and the beat reporter.

    Deee-rrreeek, Deee-rrreeek....

Actually, pictures of her would be conducive to my understanding the implications of your point as well.

Well, sometimes the circumstances does you in. I remember once, about 4 years ago, the A's were coming off of back-to-back nights of extra inning games (the 2nd of which went around 15 innings) and then had to face the Yanks. To save his relievers (as you can imagine), Art Howe had to leave his starter in the game for like 11+ runs against the Yanks. Everyone understood what was going on and felt sorry for the kid, but hey, them's the breaks and somebody had to take the lumps for back-to-back extra inning work loads.

Scary moment at Petco today as Beltran and Cameron collided head-first with each other as both dove for a flyball. Cameron was carried off the field on a stretcher, he has a concussion and might be out for a while. Beltran was a bit better and walked off on his own feet, but it looks like his shoulder was hurt badly so he'll be out for a few games at least I would guess. To make matters worse, Otsuka of the Padres beaned Floyd in the knee in the next inning. Floyd went down hard and it looked like the entire Met OF would be wiped out in one inning, but Floyd stayed in.

Both guys could have been paralyzed. It was just a terrible sight to behold when both heads snapped back on impact. Hopefully the worst outcome is just a concussion.

I have both Beltran and Cameron on my fantasy team, gotta scramble now to find some replacements. Looks like Mr. Jonny Gomes is back on the squad.

    ---

Now onto less grim news, it sounds like Mr. Lowe will stay with the wife and break off the affair. You can imagine both are good looking ladies - one being a typical athlete's wife and the other being a TV reporter. You can find pics of both I'm sure if you googled Lowe's affair.

Actually I shouldn't pick on S. Waltman. Even though she can be annoying sometimes with her Yankee worship, she's nice. So I take it back.

Not that anyone cares except me, my fantasy team has climbed to 6th, but I have a question for y'all.

I have 8 keeper candidates, if I finish anywhere from 5th - 8th (out of 16) this year, I will get to keep only 7. If I finish 4th or higher, I only get to keep 6.

Which one of these 8 would you cut?

Schilling, Tim Hudson, Harden, Bonderman, Delgado, Beltran, Wright, Weeks.

I am definitely keeping Beltran, Wright, and Harden, but there are pros and cons to the other 5, it's too hard to choose.

Weeks is the least accomplished, but he has incredible upside, and the 2B position is just so thin. Outside of M Giles and Soriano, there aren't any 2B who is definitely better.

Schilling is the biggest injury/age/effectiveness question mark, but he IS Schilling.

Hudson has been pretty non-spectacular this year and last, and he has the least upside of the 4, but he pitches in the most favorable situation among the 4.

    Arghhhhhhhh. Tough call.

Speaking of Schilling, have you heard of the rumor that 2 big stars from playoff teams have been tested positive for steroids? One team is from the AL East while the other is from NL Central. Possibilities are Boston and Cardinals/Astros.

I heard this too and more specifically that the *possible* players are Johnny Damon and Roger Clemens.
