As for them being the Yanks. Well, you won't be saying that when the Yanks sign Furcal and convert him to CF.
That will be nuts if they do that. They should just go for Damon, since they need a CF and leadoff guy and Damon is exactly that. There's no need for them to go out and get another SS and convert him.

If I were Mets GM, I wouldn't be lavishly throwing money and longterm deals to 30 something year olds like Omah has been doing, but then he is the GM, I am the armchair GM.

A 34 year old lefty who relies on velocity, chances aren't good that he will still be able to throw 100 mph by 2009. LOL.

If the Mets don't at least make the WS in the next two years, these deals will start looking real stupid by 2008.

I hope Damon ends up on the Yanks. Heeeeeeeeee.

Ok, baseball season is upon us, and I have work to do. So what does that mean? Why... a long post about predictions of course!

    Division champs:
AL East: Yanks. I hate them but I don't see the Red Sox over taking them. Whatever, they'll lose in the first round because of bad middle relief.
AL Central: Da Tribe. Why? Because I'm drinking the cool-aid my friend, drinking the cool-aid. That and the White Sox can't be THAT good in one run games this year again.
AL West: Oakland. Even more cool-aid. And besides, Ken Macha can't be that stupid can he? The only reason they didn't win it last year was bad luck and injuries. Well, luck should even out shouldn't it?
Wild Card Angels. Because the rest of the AL West is weak and they get the weak NL West for interleague.

MVP: Going out on a limb here: Jhonny Peralta. Why? Because I like how I can't spell it right without double checking at least twice. Also he was amazing last year and is much better than Sizemore. And did you notice how the Indians are gonna win the AL Central?
Cy Young: Felix Hernandez. Leading the Hernando-mania!

NL East: Braves. Because, darn it, simple inertia says it has to be so right?
NL Central: Brewers. Did I mention I've been drinking some cool-aid recently?
NL West: Pads. I guess. Just based on Jake Peavy.
Wild Card: The Cardinals. Too much hitting to ignore.

MVP: Pujols. The more I watch Pujols, the more I appreciate just how good Joe DiMaggio was. Imagine, he was everything Pujols is, except he batted .370 instead of .330, hit just as many homeruns back when the power alley at Yankee Stadium was over 460 feet away from home plate, and played a gold glove Center Field. He's rapidly moving up my ever changing list of greatest players of all time.
Cy Young: The cool-aid is telling me.... Ben Sheets.

World Series: Gotta stick with my prediction last October: The Indians. And they'll beat the... Cards to do it? Hmm, but that's so mundane to predict that the Cards will lose in the World Series. Let's make it.... the Brewers! Yes. The Indians over the Brewers in 6.

Setting the cool-aid aside. I like to point out that, somehow, by what can only be described as a coincidence of cosmic proportions, the 3 more efficiently run franchises in baseball are my 3 favorite teams. Go ahead, take a wild guess which 3 (and no, you can't accuse me of being a "fake" fan. I liked them back when they all sucked, not my fault they sucked equally back then). This is most distressing as I don't know who to cheer for when/if they do play each other. Still, it's always fun to sit back and go, yeah, my team is full of great young talent and could be great for a couple of years.

Anyone else want to take a (much better and sane) crack at the prediction game?

Shelton has 8 jacks already... and a bunch more triples and doubles. I guess we can book him for 100 dingers this yr.

Thome is back... if he can play 140 games this year he might hit 50 out in that HR haven. Not sure if his elbow and back can hold up, but he doesn't have to play any D this year. I thought he was kept as a keeper in my fantasy league along with every team in the league and let him slip by to last yr's champion team, and I drafted... Aubrey Huff for 1B instead. Looking brilliant so far...

Pujols is the best pure hitter in the last 30 years probably. Bonds doesn't count since he has a fat head and he was and probably still is juiced.

That champion team has Pujols, Vlad, Mike Young, Thome, Utley, Oswalt AND Johan Santana after ripping off a silly owner in a trade in the offseason. For a 16 team league that is virtually invincible, at least on paper. If I can somehow beat him it would be an amazin upset. My team is in first place so far though, off to a quick start even though I have gotten practically nothing from 1B or LF.

The Mets are 9-2. Since they beat up on the Nats and Marlins, that's more like a 6-5 record against actual major league teams... but then the NL overall is pretty weak this yr. That roster is very thin though. If something happens to Pedro or Wagner...

All I'm saying, as great as the Mets are playing right now (and as great as David Wright will be), righteous retribution shall be had at the hands of the baseball gods against the Mets for the monstrous crime against humanity and civilization that is their 2006 theme song. (Besides, seriously, Reyes at leadoff and Lo Doca 2nd? What the hell? That's not gonna work. Even though some really dilligent person proved that lineups, apparently, doesn't matter.)

    Proceed, if thee dare!

Metsies in foist, my fantasy team's in foist, this season has been good so far. However, now the Mets have only 3 starters left, with questions about all of them. Pedro's fragility, Glavine's age, Trachsel's general mediocrity. If there has to be Lima Time every 5 days for two months, it's gonna be ooglay.

My fantasy team also lost two starters, and it's not losing whatevers like Bannister and V Zambrano. I lost Harden to a torn back muscle, and now Contreras may be gone for a month two. Those are my 2 best SP's... Not sure how my team has been able to lead the league so far, half of the roster has been injured one way or another, plus my firstbasemen hit like middle infielders. House of cards...

This thread has been awfully quiet for most of the season. Is anyone watching the World Series? It doesn't make a difference to me whether the Cardinals or the Tigers win, but I would like the series to go to a game 7.

I haven't watched either gm, though Rogers with his "dirt" was funny.

Wagner blew the season for the Mets. Who could've guessed THAT? LOL
Well, basically anyone who has paid any attention to his career.

For once, I just wish they would stop overpaying for overhyped pitchers. Closers, unlike the "old-timers" love to insist, are easily found. You don't need to sign "proven" closers to long years and big money to win.

i'm not a big baseball fan, but i think it's strange how red sox nation is so excited about this daisuke guy. sure, he seems good, but everyone is totally banking on him. i just think that maybe people should set their hopes a little lower to avoid possible disappoint. from the way people talk, you'd think that daisuke was the greatest baseball player of all time, and he's gonna win the world series for us and kick jeter in the balls or something. yah think maybe we should let him play one season before claiming him as our new baseball god? but of course, this is red sox nation and we're not known for being ...low key.

He seems like a genuine article, has lots of tools, and success in the japanese leagues.

However, i don;t really think he is worth his price (counting the price that the Red Sox needing to pay the japanese club as well).

This off-season for me (i.e. Yankee) has its good and bad- good, because we are finally trading off some veterans to re-stock the farm; bad, because we are still not addressing the weakness of the pitching.

Would love to, except that work/time difference prevents me from the drafts!

How bout the AROD Jeter lovefest? LOL

They used to be best buds, but no more. Jealous of Jeter's 4 rings, AROD dissed Jeter as being lucky in 2001. Jeter rightfully gets pissed. PAYROD is the one who chose the moola in Texas to play for last place, so he had no right to rip Jeter for winning.

AROD has no friends on the Yanks, apparently. Funny stuff.

Fantasy baseball is fun. Nowadays I root for my players more than the Mets. It's hard to get excited when your team gives 12 million to an old fart like El Duque and another outlandish contract to Wagner the year before. As expected, Wagner stinks in the playoffs. I love David Wright though.

I'm with ARod on this one though. What he said and what Jeter said was exactly the same thing. That they don't get along as well as they did before. Well, duh! How is this news to anyone? How is this creating any new rift that wasn't there before? Sheffield didn't get along with Jeter and Torre either. Nobody cared.

And what happened in 2000 wasn't really ARod's fault. At the time, the Yanks weren't going after him anyways, neither were the Red Sox (thanks to Jeter and Nomah). So if he wanted to get on a team that won the ring, he had to sign with either the Angels, the Marlins, the White Sox, or the Cardinals. 4 teams that looked not so different from the Rangers in 2000. You are telling me you are going to turn down an extra 100 million to sign with the White Sox?

Besides, when he was asking to be traded, ARod agreed to a salary cut. Just that the MLBPA ruled against that. And he still excepted a position change to yield to an inferior fielder to get on a contender. I'm sorry, but the guy deserves a break here somewhere.

Payrod started the non-existent existent "grudge" by dissing Jeter for no reason other than jealousy.

There's no doubt overall Payrod is the better player, the comparison isn't even close except to biased Yankee fans. However, Jeter has indeed won 4 championships. Whether he deserves all the credit that he gets or not is irrelevant. Payrod shouldn't have called out a friend like that in a national publication. I forget which mag it was, but it was probably SI.

I love it when the Yanks fans boo him. Sure he doesn't deserve to be booed every AB, but that's what makes it fun for me.

True true, but that "grudge" was started 6 years ago. One year after ARod's big contract. He, like everyone else, was probably tired of hearing how Jeter was "better" when clearly he isn't. So he made one comment 6 years ago. But how about Jeter huh? Holding on to that grudge for 6 years. Some captain he is huh? Way to look out for your team and teammate there. Remember when Jeter gave Giambi when he admitted to steroid use? Where was that for ARod? Team first my arse.

True that, true that. Now if only Carlos Beltran strikes out looking with the bases loaded a couple times more, I get double the fun!

I agree that Jeter has gotten more credit than he deserves (I think you may know that from my posts over the years), but I don't think that it's AROD's place to call him out on that. It just makes him come across as a jealous hypocrite. He had won nothing, and he had taken the cash and ran to TEX. This is especially true, as I mentioned before, since he and Jeter used to be very close friends. You don't throw friends under the bus like that. He was never in the Yankee clubhouse during their championship years, who is he to say that Jeter never had to lead?

I don't think Jeter is doing anything to make AROD's life in the clubhouse miserable. He just hasn't warmed up to him. Do you think he should make a public announcement about how the Yanks are all behind AROD?

Beltran's AB to end the NLCS was as bad as you could have. Took a fastball in the wheelhouse, then swung at an unhittable pitch, then took a hammer down the middle. Shoulda swung at the two that he took, and taken the one that he swung at.

But the Mets lost because of Wagner. The turning pt in the series was the Taguchi HR off Wagner.
