They were not his 1st cousins. Duan Yan Qing and Duan Zheng Chun were distant cousins, not brothers. They were all fair game.

You're right. I was thinking of MuRong Fu and Wang YuYan. But was Duan YanQing and Duan ZhengChun really all that distant? I thought they were uncle-nephew, or was there some more separation? Originally Posted by Candide

They were distant cousins. Two branches in the Duan family basically. Duan Yan Qing's branch were wiped out by the rebellion and Duan Zheng Ming's branch became heirs to the throne after defeating the rebels. Duan Yan Qing was about the same age as Duan Zheng Ming, although his status in the Duan family was higher (his branch was placed higher than Zheng Ming's). Because Duan Zheng Ming's branch were the ones who benefited most from the extermination of Yan Qing's branch, Yan Qing always thought that the rebellion and subsequent acts were all set up by Duan Zheng Ming.
