2) if Dugu Qiubai couldn't find a match and was getting massively lonely, do you think he would have found comfort by inviting a group of decent fighters to gang up on him?

About DGKB, I always thought about that. If he relishes a challenge so much, he can fight without a sword. Or once at the final no sword stage, fight with :

1: 1 hand behind back
2: 2 hand behind back
3: 1 hand tied to his leg.
4: Blindfolded
5: Fight while carrying a heavy weight (big condor?) in one arm.
6: Right arm tied to left leg, right leg tied to neck etc etc
7: Both legs behind his head contortionist style.
8: Fight while standing on his hands
7: All the above!


Yes I can see it. DGKB standing on his hands, wrists tied together, both ankles tied behind his neck with brother condor perched on his nuts taking on all comers!

I've sort of imagined that he started to use no sword because he wanted to handicap himself and then figured some way to become even better thus ruining his intention.

Maybe he died before he figured out how to overcome no sword with blindfolded, weighted, tied-down, upside-down, backwardness

I'm not certain but I think 'The Four Greats' was a term that evolved over the years at the Jin Yong Forum that members used for 四大高手.

In Cantonese, the term "jeut" ("extreme" or "peak") is often used to describe the Greats. The English term "Greats" has been used at the cinple.net Wuxia Novels Discussion Forum (then called Yushy's Jin Yong Discussion Forum) since at least 1999, if not earlier. One poster (nobody remembers who) first used it around then and it caught on.

Yep ... the only three novels in the Condor Trilogy are LOCH, ROCH, and HSDS. Any other serials are most likely spinoffs. I think there was a TVB spinoff called Jian Mor Dugu Qiu Bai (Sword Demon, Dugu Qiubai) too.

五絕 = Wu Jue/Ng Juet, 四絕 = Si Jue/Sei Juet (Also used in Chinese forums as 天龍四絕 for XF, XYS, MRB and JMZ).
