Episode 1: Morning Sir finds the mysterious phone

A crime of passion takes place at a supermarket and the wife is suspected of murdering the mistress. Morning Sir leads his team to the crime scene to conduct an investigation. His subordinate, Ruan Zhigao, believes the wife is the murderer, but Morning Sir feels otherwise and combs the crime scene thoroughly. At that moment, Gao Shan appears and claims she witnessed the murder but her account is incomplete due to her physical impairment so she instead makes inferences from what she has seen to deduce the sequence of events. However Morning Sir refuses to admit Gao Shan's deduction as a police statement because he places great emphasis on physical evidence.

Morning Sir's mother, Zhang Yue Ping, is a law enforcement officer. Her husband, Dahe, was also a police officer who earned notoriety for setting a murder suspect free 20 years ago. He was later found dead on a prostitute's bed. Yue Ping hardened her heart toward men after that incident. Since Dahe's death, mother and son have been dependent on each other, and are good buddies at work and at home. As a result of his father's death, Morning Sir now hates unfaithful men. He has also been working continuously on the "severed leg" homicide case. Dahe oversaw the case 20 years earlier but let He Zhengnan go, and the latter has been scott-free all this while. Morning Sir resolves to crack the case to atone for his father's shame.

Continued investigations into the crime of passion reveals that Gao Shan's deduction was correct but Morning Sir thinks it's a lucky guess on Gao Shan's part. Gao Shan is a handicapped novelist who uses materials on true crime cases in her stories. She is greatly interested in the "severed leg" homicide case and believes He Zhengnan isn't the murderer. Li Shijing, Gao Shan's cousin, is a junior female police officer who has just been transferred to Morning Sir's team. While trying to catch up with Shijing, who had gone after a pickpocket, Gao Shan discovers a doll box containing a severed leg in a rubbish heap in a back alley. Morning Sir thinks He Zhengnan was behind it.

Around the same time, Morning Sir also discovers a phone amongst his late father's possession, and that phone surprisingly works... ...

Episode 2: Morning Sir nabs Zhengnan with Dahe's leads

...and Dahe, from twenty years back, is on the other end of the phone. Morning Sir is stunned but refuses to acknowledge his father. He asks Dahe to investigate Zhengnan's case, and tells the latter to locate Zhengnan's father, Hejiu. Dahe initially finds the encounter strange and is doubtful, but when he learns that Morning Sir is also a policeman and is able to accurately describe events twenty years earlier that have not occurred, he firmly believes in Morning Sir and both exchange information.

Gao Shan asks Yue Ping for information on the "severed leg" homicide case. Morning Sir finds this repugnant as he feels she's reopening old wounds. Gao Shan receives a mysterious ICQ message discussing the case she's investigating and thanking her for believing in He Zhengnan, and thinks this person may indeed be He Zhengnan. Morning Sir finally locates Hejiu following Dahe's tip off but Gao Shan is a step ahead of him. It turns out that she had deduced Hejiu's whereabouts from the contents of that ICQ message. The two of them discover altar tablets and newspaper clippings on the victims, as well as some information on plastic surgery and surmise that Zhengnan had undergone plastic surgery to elude capture.

Hejiu suffers an asthma attack so Gao Shan and Morning Sir send him to the hospital. Gao Shan's boss at the publishing company, Herman, looks Gao Shan up at the hospital. Gao Shan and Morning Sir notice he's overly anxious and uptight when it comes to Hejiu and suspect him. Gao Shan exposes Herman's true identity but he denies being a murderer. He had wanted to flee but was worried about his father so he decided to remain and look after him. Morning Sir leads a team to arrest Herman, and in a moment of desperation, Herman kidnaps Gao Shan. The car they are in crashes. With the police hot in pursuit, Herman contemplates suicide but Gao Shan urges him against it and promises she will do whatever it takes to help him prove his innocence. Morning Sir arrives at the scene and takes Herman into custody.

Episode 3: Gao Shan and Morning Sir pretend to be lovers

Gao Shan is annoyed with Morning Sir's indiscriminate way of handling Herman's (Zhengnan's) case and insists Herman is innocent. She believes Herman had quit smoking long ago so the cigarette butt found at the crime scene twenty years earlier proves a third person was present. Herman tells Gao Shan both his murdered girlfriends had been involved with other men, and despairs that his innocence will never be proven. When Gao Shan emerges from the police station, reporters waiting outside ask her how she's related to Herman's case. Since she thinks the murderer's targets were Herman's girlfriends, she deliberately claims she is Herman's girlfriend to lure the murderer into the open.

Morning Sir, who is trying to determine the owner of the cigarette butt, calls Dahe and asks him to obtain the cigarette butt from He Zhengnan's case and leave it at a place where he can retrieve it. Dahe follows Morning Sir's instructions and the latter then passes that cigarette butt along with one he had discovered when he went in search of Hejiu to Yue Ping to compare the DNA. The analysis report generated shows that the DNA on the two cigarettes match, but they don't belong to He Zhengnan.

Gao Shan looks Morning Sir up and asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend. She wants to feign infidelity to make the murderer seek her out. Gao Shan's mother, Miaolan, inadvertently sees her daughter and Morning Sir together and is delighted because she thinks they are really dating; Shijing, on the contrary, is jealous. Morning Sir admires Gao Shan for her cheery disposition despite her physical impairment. The two of them have a meal at a pizza joint and one of the waiters there is extremely attentive toward Gao Shan. Gao Shan is later attacked and almost killed in the carpark by the murderer. Morning Sir regrets his inability to protect her and requests that his superior send backup to provide round-the-clock protection.

Gao Shan is forced to remain indoors and is unhappy. She calls Morning Sir to discuss the case and remembers a familiar phrase that the killer uttered when he attacked her. Both of them realise this phrase was lifted from a passage of He Zhengnan's thesis and Morning Sir immediately rushes to the library to locate it. He discovers He Zhengnan's thesis has been missing from the library for twenty years so he calls Dahe and asks him to catch the person who stole it. The thief sneaks away with the thesis when Dahe isn't alert but Dahe remembers that the thief was wearing the "Hao Ji" uniform. Morning Sir hurries to Hao Ji and follows the leads to the thief's house. He and his team discover the murder weapon and a skeleton from the homicide case.

Around the same time, a deliveryman sends pizza to Gao Shan's house. Gao Shan finds his actions suspicious and concludes he is the murder but before she can get away, he launches an attack... ...

Episode 4: Morning Sir discovers Dahe had an affair twenty years ago

The pizza deliveryman attacks Gao Shan. Thankfully Morning Sir arrives in time to save her. When Morning Sir interrogates him for his motive, the deliveryman said he used to be a lowly waiter at Hao Ji who was often treated harshly and bullied. He Zhengnan repeatedly came to his rescue, and over time his gratitude transformed into adulation. To understand Zhengnan, he read the latter's thesis but his erroneous interpretation of Zhengnan's theory of human nature led him to kill the two girlfriends, because he thought they were unprincipled and deserved to die. Zhengnan was implicated as a result of these murders. Yue Ping sympathises with Zhengnan and the two of them become good friends. Gao Shan gives Morning Sir a gift to express her gratitude to him for saving her life and their relationship takes a turn for the better. Morning Sir calls Dahe to thank him but is still unwilling to relent and acknowledge his father.

Business tycoon Zhao Zhicheng invites Gao Shan to write a biography of his late wife Miaoling, who had died in a car accident, and passes her a collection of love letters as reference material. Zhicheng then receives an extortion letter in which the writer claims to possess a photograph of Miaoling as a prostitute. He notifies the police and the person in charge of the case is none other than Morning Sir. Zhicheng confesses he was shocked to learn Miaoling was a prostitute and states he was never aware of this. Zhengnan deduces the suspect's personality from his analysis of the handwriting in the letter. Morning Sir is impressed. Gao Shan discovers a letter amongst the stack that Zhicheng passed to her that doesn't bear Miaoling's handwriting and is bewildered.

Morning Sir calls Dahe to ask some questions but is infuriated when he learns Dahe is in the company of another woman. It was Yue Ping's birthday at that time and Dahe had bought a bracelet which he intended to give to her as a present. Yue Ping accidentally learnt about this and was overjoyed but Dahe never gave it to her. He also didn't spend her birthday with her, claiming he had work to do. Yue Ping was extremely disappointed. Zhicheng receives a photograph of Miaoling and her customer and hands it over to the police. Morning Sir finds the profile of the man in the photograph familiar but can't place him because it is blurred. Yue Ping has the photograph enhanced, only to discover that Dahe and Miaoling are in the picture and that Miaoling is holding the bracelet Dahe bought in her hand. She is both ashamed and devastated to learn that Dahe spent the night of her birthday, twenty years ago, with a prostitute. Morning Sir consoles his mother and feels his resentment towards his father grow.

Episode 5: Gao Shan discloses her family background to Morning Sir

Dahe calls Morning Sir and the latter berates him angrily for being in the company of a prostitute. Dahe is baffled and finds it strange that Morning Sir has a photograph of him and Miaoling. He later tells Morning Sir that he is in urgent need of money and asks him to find out the winning numbers for that year. Morning Sir thinks Dahe is doing this for Miaoling's sake and rebukes him. He even hurls the phone down the hill.

Zhicheng gives a huge sum of money to Gao Shan as her writer's fee but tells her she need not continue work on the biography. Gao Shan agrees because she understands Zhicheng is trying to guard the secret that Miaoling was moonlighting as a prostitute.

Dahe buys a bottle of perfume in place of the bracelet and gives it to Yue Ping. She is disappointed. Dahe leads his team on a raid of the brothel. It turns out that he was working undercover when he was with Miaoling. During the raid, Dahe discovers a small hole in the wall of the room he had been in and learns that a reporter had secretly taken pornographic photographs through the hole. He guesses that the photograph Morning Sir had seen was the one taken by that reporter.

Gao Shan keeps a dispirited Morning Sir company and encourages him to bravely accept reality. She tells him how she ran away from home, met with a car accident and became half paralysed, after her parents separated because she missed her mother. This incident, however, made her parents reconcile and she was once again able to have a warm, close-knit family. So she thinks this is a blessing rather than a bane. Moreover, her intuition tells her Miaoling resorted to prostitution because she had her difficulties. Moved by Gao Shan's optimism, Morning Sir reviews the case again and speculates Miaoling's death may have been premediated.

When Morning Sir spots kids drawing on the tree he had planted, he rushes forward to chase them away. Gao Shan knows Morning Sir still holds Dahe in high regard as she watches him get flustered over his tree. Morning Sir unearths a time capsule Dahe had hidden and discovers a paper with the name of the reporter who had taken that photograph twenty years ago. Both hurriedly look for him but Morning Sir is unable to get a reply from the reporter so Gao Shan comes up with a way to get to the bottom of the matter. Unfortunately, the person before them isn't the reporter in question as he had passed away years earlier. Morning Sir is dejected by the news. Gao Shan and Morning Sir recall that the photograph had a certain unique fragrance and believe it is an important clue. Gao Shan heads to the Zhao residence and discovers Miaoling's last letter hidden in the glass house where her roses were grown.

Episode 6: Morning Sir and Yue Ping investigate Dahe's death

The contents of Miaoling's letter reveal that she became a prostitute to support Zhicheng's education. That was how she met Dahe who was working undercover. Dahe sympathised with her predicament and urged her to give up moonlighting as a prostitute. He even gave the bracelet he had bought for Yue Ping to Miaoling to help tide her over and let her start anew. Morning Sir discovers the source of the photograph's fragrance is the aromatherapy oil in the car and that the Zhao's chauffeur, Ah Qiang, is the one trying to extort money from Zhicheng. Ah Qiang only tried to blackmail Miaoling (and later Zhicheng), but he didn't kill her. She committed suicide because she feared facing Zhicheng. The truth had finally come to light. Zhicheng regrets neglecting Miaoling, which indirectly caused her death. Gao Shan takes the opportunity to encourage Morning Sir to be honest with Dahe.

Morning Sir hurries to locate his phone and then calls Dahe to apologise. Yue Ping and Morning Sir realise they have wronged Dahe and begin suspect that there is more to his death than meets the eye. Mother and son decide to return to the brothel Dahe died in to investigate. The brothel boss tell them Dahe died of a drug overdose and that the prostitute involved later became rich overnight and hurriedly migrated to UK. Morning Sir silently swears he will investigate the truth behind Dahe's death. Dahe places a call to Morning Sir and asks the latter to find out how his son is doing in 2004. Morning Sir comes up with excuses to evade the task and Dahe begins to suspect Morning Sir is his son.

Gao Shan goes to the hospital to do volunteer work. A patient, Xu Wenbiao, who had been in a coma for twenty years suddenly regains consciousness and claims he had been in that state because someone pushed him down a building. Morning Sir takes over Wenbiao's case but the trail is cold because twenty years have elapsed. He then calls Dahe and asks him to check out the crime scene in his era. Dahe does an experiment on Morning Sir's behalf to assess whether Wenbiao had been pushed off the building or had jumped of his own accord. Results of the experiment indicate that Wenbiao was pushed. Morning Sir learns Wenbiao had an enemy by the name of Sang Kun and finds him most suspicious. But Sang Kun would later be killed in a fight so Morning Sir calls Dahe and asks him to tell Sang Kun to be careful.

Episode 7: Morning Sir and Dahe acknowledge each other

Morning Sir heads to the woods and recalls how Dahe used to teach him the morse code during his childhood. He glances at the arrangement of the row of trees from afar and realises it says "Daddy loves you" in morse code. Morning Sir finally understands his father's love for him. Touched, he immediately calls Dahe and acknowledges him. Dahe all along had an affinity with Morning Sir and knew his son had reasons for hiding the truth so he waited patiently for Morning Sir to accept him. Father and son finally reach an understanding.

Wenbiao's former enemy Sang Kun turns up at the hospital to visit him. Sang Kun had survived the fight because of Dahe's warning, repented, and became a follower of God. Morning Sir learns, from the information Dahe gathered, that a tenant by the name of Liang Shaofen had pushed Wenbiao, and goes in search of her. Dahe buries an eyewitness' drawing of Shaofen in the time capsule. Morning Sir retrieves it but is unable to make any headway because the drawing is a child's scrawl. Shijing, however, seems to find the drawing familiar.

Gao Shan finds a stamp bearing the name of Liang Shaofen amongst the possessions Miaolan discarded in the trash and begins to have her suspicions. She tails Miaolan and finds out that she is acquainted with Wenbiao. Twenty years ago, Miaolan had a one nightstand with Wenbiao in retaliation for Jingchang's infidelity and eventually gave birth to a daughter. Wenbiao uses this to blackmail Miaolan. Upon hearing their conversation, Gao Shan is full of disbelief (that she is Wenbiao's daughter) and cries bitterly. Morning Sir chances upon Gao Shan and tries to comfort her but Gao Shan doesn't confide in him. Shijing discovers Shaofen's possessions in Gao Shan's room and questions her. Gao Shan tells her the truth and the two decide to help Miaolan.

Morning Sir buys a pair of shoes for Gao Shan and she is delighted; their feelings for each other grow. Yue Ping had seen her son buying a pair of ladies shoes so she pestered him, wanting to know whether he was dating, but he just smiled and refused to reply. Morning Sir presses Shijing for Miaolan's whereabouts but she intentionally takes her time with the task and is scolded by Morning Sir. He then assigns Shijing and Zhigao to tail Miaolan and Wenbiao.

Episode 8: Shijing learns the truth about her background

Shijing threatens Wenbiao when he tries to extort money from Miaolan, and Zhigao appears in time to prevent her from beating Wenbiao up. Zhigao tries to pursue Shijing but she finds him annoying. Gao Shan and Shijing ask Miaolan for her daughter's whereabouts and Miaolan lies that she is dead. Dahe calls Morning Sir and wants to know how he (Dahe) is doing in 2004 but Morning Sir changes the subject and tells him to check up on Wenbiao's activities twenty years ago. Dahe finds the birth certificate of Wenbiao's daughter. Alas most of it has been burnt to ashes so Dahe collects the burnt paper and ashes, puts it in the time capsule, and buries it for his son. Morning Sir recovers the contents and passes it to Yue Ping to let her try restore the evidence. Yue Ping unexpectedly discovers the name Shijing on the birth certificate.

Morning Sir confronts Gao Shan for hiding Miaolan's past from him. To protect her mother Gao Shan refuses to divulge any information or let him search her house, and the two of them fall out. Miaolan heads to the hotel to get even with Wenbiao. Gao Shan is worried for her mother and tells Miaolan to wait until she reaches before proceeding to Wenbiao's room but Miaolan ignores her advice and goes in search of Wenbiao. Gao Shan sees Wenbiao plunge from the hotel window and land on her car windscreen just as she pulls up outside the hotel, and is shocked. Morning Sir orders Shijing off Xu Wenbiao's case because she is the offspring of Wenbiao and Miaolan. This revelation comes like a bolt out of the blue for Shijing and she is unable to accept the way things have turned out.

With Wenbiao dead, Miaolan becomes the prime suspect. Shijing accuses Miaolan of being the murderer and Morning Sir places her under arrest. Gao Shan is both anxious and furious. Morning Sir believes Miaolan had the motive to murder Wenbiao while Shijing incriminates Miaolan. Gao Shan tries to put in a good word for Miaolan but both Morning Sir and Shijing refuse to accept her statement. Shijing moves out despite Gao Shan's efforts to make her change her mind. Zhigao offers to let her stay at his place and Shijing reluctantly agrees. Gao Shan, seeing that Shijing had arranged a prayer ritual for Wenbiao, tries to console the latter but is rebuffed. Shijing is unyielding so Gao Shan decides to leave. During the court hearing, Shijing accuses Miaolan of murder and declares her hatred for her mother. On hearing her daugther's words, Miaolan is devastated... ...

Morning Sir and his men find a hotel cleaner who claimed he only saw Miaolan and no one else on the day of Xu Wenbiao's murder. However, Morning Sir later discovers that the cleaner was lying. Morning Sir finds two pairs of shoes of different sizes amongst Wenbiao's belongings and wonders who the owners are. Sang Kun turns up at the cemetry for the funeral ceremony Shijing has arranged for Wenbiao. Morning Sir notices Sang Kun's shoeprints match the shoes Wenbiao had and immediately chases after him. While trying to escape, Sang Kun is knocked down by a car and sent to the hospital in critical condition.

At the hospital, Sang Kun's wife tells Morning Sir Sang Kun never repented, he only treated the church as a safe haven from his enemies. When he discovered the affair between Wenbiao and Miaolan, he ganged up with Wenbiao to blackmail Miaolan but greed caused the two of them to fall out. A struggle ensued and Sang Kun pushed Wenbiao to his death. Morning Sir begs Sang Kun to tell the truth on his deathbed so Miaolan can be set free but Sang Kun dies before he can finish his account of the events twenty years earlier; Morning Sir doesn't tell Gao Shan he didn't manage to record Sang Kun's last words to avoid disappointing her.

Morning Sir calls Dahe and asks him to look Sang Kun up to record 'his last words in 2004.' Sang Kun is perplexed but goes along with Dahe's demands. Morning Sir submits the recording as court evidence in Miaolan's defence. The court eventually rules in her favour and she is acquitted. The Gaos thank Morning Sir. Gao Shan apologises to Morning Sir, but he dismisses their earlier spat and helps her to tie a shoelace that had come undone. Gao Shan is smitten.

A theft occurs at Dahe's police station and the only clue is a strand of hair. Dahe asks his son to check the records in 2004 to find the culprit but Morning Sir discovers the case was never solved, and tells Dahe to collect hair specimens from the suspects so he can run a DNA test. Ding Sir finds Zhigao's work attitude unsatisfactory and wants to have him transferred. Morning Sir vouches for him but Zhigao misunderstands and thinks Morning Sir badmouthed him.

Episode 10: Morning Sir is suspected of stealing the Star of Cupid

Legend has it that couples who are fated will see a vision of Cupid when optical rays are shone on the Star of Cupid. Gao Shan is intrigued. The owner of the Star of Cupid, Mrs Cheng, receives a threat so the police are on high alert and Morning Sir is assigned the responsibility of providing security at the exhibition. Zhigao makes things difficult for Morning Sir and the latter feels frustrated. Gao Shan visits the exhibition alone but bumps into Morning Sir. She thinks they have an affinity. Morning Sir and Gao Shan both see the vision of Cupid and are delighted. Shijing tells Gao Shan she likes Morning Sir, so Gao Shan pretends she didn't see the vision to avoid hurting Shijing's feelings. Morning Sir is disappointed at Gao Shan for concealing the truth. Morning Sir has been receiving many queer phone calls lately. He finds this weird.

The DNA from the hair specimens Dahe gave his son are analysed but none match that of the strand of hair. Morning Sir asks his father whether it was an inside job and Dahe thinks of his partner Liu Zhong. Morning Sir finds out Liu Zhong was to be killed in a traffic accident back in 1984 and asks his father to tell Liu Zhong to be wary. Dahe questions his buddy and learns that he stole the money because he was deeply in debt. Dahe then persuades Liu Zhong to turn himself in. Liu Zhong chooses to flee and is almost hit by a car but Dahe pulls him out of harm's way. Liu Zhong tries to scramble away as Dahe turns his attention to the injured driver of the car and is killed by an oncoming lorry. Dahe is guilt-ridden.

One day, Dahe unwittingly hears his son mention his death to Yue Ping and is stunned. He writes his thoughts in a letter and buries it in the time capsule next to the tree. Morning Sir is extremely worried after reading it because he can sense his father is in low spirits.

The Star of Cupid is stolen during Morning Sir's watch. Morning Sir insists he saw someone dressed in black stealing it and rushed into the exhibition room to nab the person. However, when Zhigao and the rest of the team review the video surveillance recordings, there is no sign of that person in black. Morning Sir is suspended pending investigations. Gao Shan comforts him and exchanges her handphone with his so he won't be harrassed. Shijing believes Morning Sir is innocent and helps him in his investigation. She finds Weifeng suspicious and questions him only to learn that he isn't the culprit. They unintentionally discover that Zhigao owns a big collection of video recording and editing equipment.

Episode 11: Morning Sir is in trouble

Zhigao is unhappy that Shijing is enthusiastically investigating the theft of the Star of Cupid on Morning Sir's behalf. Gao Shan receives one of those queer phone calls Morning Sir had been receiving and because she doesn't think it is a prank call, she asks Shijing to check their origin from the police files. Morning Sir and Shijing learn that a person called Li Wenqiang made those phone calls and go in search of him. Wenqiang turns out to be a smuggler. He manages to give both Morning Sir and Shijing the slip when they try to apprehend him. Zhigao arrives at the scene just as Wenqiang escapes in a boat and he accuses Morning Sir of aiding Wenqiang. Shijing tries to defend Morning Sir but is suspended from duty by Ding Sir for divulging confidential information.

Zhigao searches Morning Sir's residence and upsets Yue Ping when he damages the music record Dahe gave to her. Gao Shan tells Morning Sir to pursue Shijing, but he decides to reject Shijing when he realises Gao Shan's feelings for him after seeing the SMS' she meant to send to him in her handphone. Shijing, however, says she won't give up. Morning Sir tells Gao Shan he loves her but Gao Shan turns him down for Shijing's sake.

Morning Sir and Gao Shan revisit the crime scene to review the case. Gao Shan discovers some alterations had been made to the toilet for handicapped people and that a panel in the wall hid sockets to which some video cables were connected. Both deduce someone had played a recording of that person in black from this toilet to lure Morning Sir to the exhibition hall. Morning Sir's suspicions are aroused. Gao Shan and him believe the theft was pre-meditated and immediately pay a visit to the company in charge of the retrofitting. The unit that the company occupies seems to be vacant. They find Morning Sir's photographs and related news clippings plastered all over the walls of one of the rooms, and suspect he is the criminal's target. Morning Sir wonders whether that person is Liu Zhong's son and suspects Zhigao is the person in question. Dahe visits the doctor and is told he is suffering from cancer. He decides to end his life so he won't be a burden to Yue Ping and calls his son to bid him farewell. Morning Sir is tailing Zhigao as this moment so Gao Shan answers the phone and is shocked to hear Dahe, who was supposed to have died twenty years ago, on the other end of the line... ...

Episode 12: Dahe encourages Yue Ping from the 'other world'

After Liu Zhong died, Dahe took care of his wife and son but his efforts have gone unappreciated . Yue Ping has become high strung because she has been missing Dahe and worrying constantly about Morning Sir. Concerned for her wellbeing, Gao Shan and Herman keep her company. Herman even uses hypnosis to calm her down but Yue Ping's condition fails to take a turn for the better so Gao Shan places a call to Dahe and asks him to provide Yue Ping with moral support. Dahe follows Gao Shan's instructions. Yue Ping's mood improves after her chat with Dahe. Yue Ping (in 1984) wants Dahe to dance with her after he hangs up. Upon seeing how reliant his wife is on him and knowing he doesn't have long to live, Dahe tells her to cherish life but Yue Ping is blissfully ignorant.

Herman discovers the cold medication Yue Ping has been using had been swopped with hallucinogens and tells Morning Sir and Gao Shan. Morning Sir thinks someone is targeting his family. Shijing is adamant that Zhigao is the culprit but Zhigao continues to investigate Morning Sir, so Shijing finds him detestful. While out shopping, Gao Shan and Shijing pass by a television set at an electronics store and see a video clip of Zhigao expressing his love for Shijing. Shijing learns from a store assistant that Zhigao had bought video equipment but had beseeched him to create the video and play it in-house as he didn't know how to use them. Gao Shan finds this news strange because it means Zhigao doesn't have the tecnical knowledge to change the images of the video surveillance recordings. Yue Ping is attacked and Zhigao, who happens to witness the incident, comes to her rescue. Shijing is worried when she sees his injury and accompanies him to the hospital. Zhigao tells her he didn't harm Morning Sir.

Morning Sir suspects Liu Zhong's son, Liu Yaozu, is the mastermind so Gao Shan and Shijing head to Liu Zhong's resting place to ambush Liu Yaozu. They see a mentally handicapped male cleaning Liu Zhong's plaque and learn that he is Liu Yaozu. The series of events that ensue seem to indicate Yaozu had the ability to frame Morning Sir despite his handicap. Dahe discovers Liu Zhong's wife was pregnant and had given birth to a baby girl. Morning Sir and Yue Ping were with Mrs Cheng when Morning Sir learnt about this new development. Mrs Cheng, who had also heard the news, immediately holds Yue Ping at gunpoint.

Episode 14: Morning Sir changes Gao Shan's fate

Gao Shan develops an inferiority complex: she doesn't want to be dependent on Morning Sir for everything. Once, when Morning Sir made a date with her, she refused to let him pick her up and came on her own but the stairs posed an obstacle to her getting to their meeting. She tried to go up the steps using her wheelchair but accidentally fell over. Afraid Morning Sir would discover her, she stealthily left. When he questions her, she frankly tells him that in the past she had never felt inferior despite her physical disability because it was her disability which reunited her family. But now that she has fallen for him, she detests her current condition and feels confused so she decides they should break up and remain good friends. Morning Sir, however, thinks he is the cause of Gao Shan's pain and places a call to Dahe, asking him to prevent that fateful car accident that robbed Gao Shan of her ability to walk. Dahe follows his son's instructions and rescues the young Gao Shan. Morning Sir is delighted when he hears Dahe had accomplished the task and tries to contact Gao Shan but discovers he can't find her handphone number in his phone.

Morning Sir heads to Gao Shan's house to look for her but only finds Shijing there. When Shijing learns that he has come in search of Gao Shan, she is extremely taken aback. Both Shijing and Miaolan tell Morning Sir that Gao Shan had gone missing twenty years ago and he is stunned. He returns home and calls Dahe. Yue Ping sees her son holding her late husband's possessions, flies into a temper and scolds him for being unable to forget his father. Morning Sir is bewildered.

Morning Sir contacts Dahe. Dahe knows he has changed history by saving Gao Shan in 1984 and by doing so everything connected with Gao Shan in 2004 has ceased to happen. Morning Sir feels helpless with this turn of events. Dahe consoles him, telling him though everything may have changed, relationship between father and son haven't and Morning Sir feels comforted. Dahe tells his son to approach Gao Shan's parents for clues. Morning Sir locates Gao Jingchang's law office and tails him to a big mansion. An explosion suddenly occurs just as both are standing outside. Morning Sir finds a corpse at the scene which forensics determines is that of the gangland chief, Ding Guoshen. Guoshen had left a videotape behind for Jingchang, in which he had recorded his last words. The police believe he had committed suicide. When Morning Sir analyses the videotape, he notices Gao Shan's image reflected in the pupils of Ding Guoshen's eyes... ...

Episode 15: Gao Shan becomes the adopted daughter of a chief of the underworld

Morning Sir obtains some leads from the videotape. He finds himself wandering back toward the place where he and Gao Shan had seen the rainbow. There he witnesses Gao Shan being attacked and comes to her rescue but she doesn't remember him. He brings her to the hospital and the doctor says she is suffering from amnesia. When Morning Sir brings her home, she has no impression of Shijing and Miaolan. Gao Shan is pursued by assailants who are trying to kill her. As she fights them off, she suddenly recalls she was staying at a hotel. Both Morning Sir and Gao Shan head to the hotel, locate her room and find a big stack of letters in her suitcase. From the correspondence in the letters, it turns out Gao Shan's actual name is Ding Zhiyun, and she is Guoshen's adopted daughter.

Morning Sir brings Gao Shan back to the scene of the explosion in a bid to jog her memory. He even locates the driver of the car that knocked Gao Shan down, causing her amnesia. Shijing is unhappy with Morning Sir for being so attentive toward Gao Shan. Jingchang reads Guoshen's will. Gao Shan will inherit the majority of Guoshen's vast estate and assume his position at the helm of the gang. Guoshen's third wife, Betty, and his subordinate, Moluo, are discontent. Morning Sir tells Gao Shan that her birth father is Jingchang, but Gao Shan refuses to acknowledge him. He then brings Gao Shan to see the rainbow. She is intrigued by the spectacle but doesn't have any impression of him. Morning Sir is disappointed. While they are enjoying the scene, someone tries to murder Gao Shan using a long-range sniper's rifle but she manages to dodge the bullet. Morning Sir's superior is unhappy with the attention he is paying Gao Shan and urges him to keep his distance from the underworld.

Dahe tells his son that Moluo and Betty are having an affair. Morning Sir tells Dahe to keep them under surveillance. He then assigns Weifeng and Zhigao to tail Betty and Moluo. The police learn from the adulterous couple that Guoshen had a mistress in secret and that mistress liked painting. Morning Sir and his team discover nine small paintings on a wall in Guoshen's office. There is also a safe hidden behind one the paintings. It contains a copy of Guoshen's will but the wax seal on the envelope has already been broken. Morning Sir suddenly thinks of piecing the nine small paintings together. This reveals the image of a long-haired woman. However, no one present can recognise the painting's subject.

Episode 16: Guoshen's murderer is discovered

He Zhengnan, who is currently serving his jail term in prison, had previously written a biography on Guoshen so he is somewhat familiar with the latter. Morning Sir looks him up to discuss the murder. Zhengnan's analysis indicates Guoshen's mistress intentionally hung those drawings in his office to flaunt her relationship with him. Morning Sir instructs his father to follow Guoshen and his mistress. Dahe tracks the two lovers down but sees the mistress entering the male toilet and finds this odd.

Morning Sir forgets Shijing's birthday because he's busy investigating Guoshen's death. Shijing, however, believes Gao Shan is the reason why Morning Sir has neglected her and goes to the nightclub to confront Gao Shan. Morning Sir locates the art gallery Dahe had told him about and bumps into Guoshen's henchman, Zhaojun. Zhaojun denies ownership of the drawing and says it belongs to another subordinate, Ah Yu.

Zhaojun brings Morning Sir to look Ah Yu up but discovers he has committed suicide and left a letter behind. In it, Ah Yu acknowledges his homosexual relationship with Guoshen, confesses how he hated Guoshen's concern for Gao Shan and how he murdered him in a fit of anger when he discovered Guoshen had chosen to leave his estate to Gao Shan. With the close of this case, Dahe asks Morning Sir to help prove Zhengnan's innocence so Morning Sir uses everything he knows about the "severed leg" homicide case to lure the real murderer into the open. The deliveryman is arrested and Zhengnan is freed.

Zhengnan expresses his gratitude to the Hes. Yue Ping cooks a meal for Zhengnan and his father, Hejiu. Though Hejiu is suffering from dementia, he still remembers Dahe's honesty and love for his family. Dahe overhears Yue Ping lamenting that she still takes his death to heart. He knows his death has caused her great sorrow but doesn't know why he died on a prostitute's bed. Zhigao looks Gao Shan up at the nightclub and professes his love for her. It turns out that he is doing this for Shijing's sake. Gao Shan is infuriated and complains to Morning Sir. Morning Sir states that Gao Shan and himself are the true couple and Gao Shan is mystified.

Episode 17: Gao Shan confesses the truth to Morning Sir

Gao Shan decides to return to Canada. Morning Sir tries to stop her. He asks Zhengnan to hypnotise Gao Shan to try to stimulate her memory but it doesn't work. Morning Sir then asks Gao Shan to speak with his father. Unfortunately the phone fails to function at the crucial moment, thus Morning Sir has no choice but to send Gao Shan off at the airport. Dahe buries a wedding ring and a love letter addressed to Miaoling in the time capsule, and asks his son to pass the contents to Yue Ping so Yue Ping will give up on him but Morning Sir doesn't agree with his idea because he thinks this will make Yue Ping hate Dahe more. Dahe, on the other hand, would rather hurt Yue Ping once than make her suffer half a lifetime so Morning Sir agrees to help him. When Yue Ping sees Dahe's letter and ring, she thinks Dahe was unfaithful and is grief stricken.

Dahe tells Morning Sir to bring Yue Ping and Zhengnan together in the hope that his wife will enjoy happiness. Morning Sir is frustrated that Gao Shan has no recollection of the time they spent together; Dahe urges him to let things take its course. Morning Sir witnesses Gao Shan trying to kill Guoshen's maid and intervenes. The two of them fight it out and he manages to disarm her and handcuff her. Gao Shan says Ah Yu killed Guoshen because he was unhappy Guoshen decided to forsake their relationship for the sake of the gang. He decided to retaliate and even made Gao Shan his accomplice. Afterward Ah Yu made excuses to see Gao Shan and tried to kill her by spiking her drink and rendering her unconscious. Gao Shan thinks no one will believe her words because they think she's always been untruthful but Morning Sir declares he believes everything she told him.

Morning Sir brings Gao Shan to live with Miaolan and Shijing is upset. Zhigao encourages Shijing to interact with Gao Shan. Shijing resents Gao Shan for stealing Morning Sir from her and goes all out to make things difficult for her. Gao Shan chooses to tolerate her behaviour. Zhengnan finds Gao Shan's transformation odd and believes she is hiding something. He worries that she will harm Morning Sir and urges the latter to be on his guard.

Yue Ping sees Gao Shan visiting her son at the hospital, rebukes her and chases her away. Zhaojun notices that Gao Shan is exceptionally concerned for Morning Sir and urges her to be wary of him. Gao Shan ignores everything she has heard and continues to visit Morning Sir. She even kisses him to let him know she is willing to be with him. Morning Sir is overjoyed. Yue Ping opposes the relationship between her son and Gao Shan but Morning Sir pays no heed. Dahe carries on with his search for the young Gao Shan and discovers she is being used to move drugs by drug peddlers. Morning Sir relates their past to Gao Shan but she has no recollection. He later gives her a bracelet she fancies and asks her to leave the underworld to continue her studies. Gao Shan agrees to give this consideration.

When she returns home she tells her stepfather she wants to leave Hong Kong with Morning Sir. Zhaojun approves her decision, but in the dark, he schemes to tear the two apart. Gao Shan leads her gang members to save her stepfather from being ambushed by Black Ghost and both sides get embroiled in a big clash. Morning Sir, who has led a police team to the scene to observe the proceedings, sees Gao Shan killing again and chases after her. He again urges her to leave all the violence and squirmishes behind and return to Canada. He also tells her he is willing to give everything up to be with her. Gao Shan is moved and agrees. The latter tells her he was hurt in a police ambush and shows her a bugging device in the bracelet Morning Sir had given her. Gao Shan is led to believe that Morning Sir was using her. Morning Sir is suspended by Ding Sir for letting Gao Shan flee.

Zhaojun recalls how he abducted Gao Shan from the streets twenty years ago and used her and other small children to transport drugs. During one of these operations, Zhaojun hurled Gao Shan and the drugs she was carrying off a cliff to evade capture by Dahe and his men. After the police left, Zhaojun returned to look for his drugs but only found an unconscious Gao Shan. He rushed her to the hospital, demanding the doctor cure her so he could locate the drugs but Gao Shan misunderstood and thought Zhaojun truly cared for her.
