South Korean cinema is on fire. One of its many anticipated films this year is April Snow, a lyrical love story entwining two tormented hearts broken by a terrible shock.

As unexpected as a snowstorm in summer, the news of a car accident tears In-su (Bae Yong-joon) away from his lighting gig at a Seoul rap concert and throws him into the unfamiliar environs of a nightmare: a hospital hallway in a quiet, unknown seaside town. While the doctors in the operating room try to save his wife’s life, the knife of doubt and jealousy slices through his soul with equal surgical precision. Sitting next to In-su in the waiting room is the quiet Seoyoung (Son Ye-jin), the wife of the man who almost died in the same car in which In-su’s wife was riding.

Seo-young and In-su’s worst fears are soon confirmed through explicit mobile phone messages and the scant articles they are asked to identify at the scene of the accident: a digital camera, lipstick, a condom. Their spouses were lovers. Hate, resentment and searing jealousy mingle with the fear of confronting death and grief, and with an even more terrifying, creeping desire: the wish that the accident had been a fatal one. And then, the two betrayed spouses begin to feel something new and romantic towards one another.

Cold, antiseptic atmospheres are bathed in a wintry light that seems to shine from inside the battered protagonists’ emotional cores. Hur Jin-ho’s airy and elegant directorial touch slides over the gestures of everyday life and empties them of their accepted meaning, creating a haunting limbo where the performances of Son Ye-jin and top Korean star Bae Yong-joon glow with deep psychological impact. An intimate narrative accompanies this subtle dance of passions. Like mirrored reflections on the two protagonists’ new intimacy we see rendered - with unusual simplicity - the complexity of heartbreak.

    Beneath the Radar

    Fri 21 Jul 2006
Director Hur Jin-ho's third feature is a bittersweet melodrama that will cast a spell over audiences. The South Korean director has yet again managed to craft a simple yet beautiful and emotive film, following Christmas in August and One Fine Spring Day.

In-su (Bae Yong-joon) and Seo-young (Son Ye-jin) meet at a hospital in the wake of a car accident involving their spouses, who are in a coma. They discover that their critically ill partners were conducting an affair and begin to seek solace in each other, growing slowly closer. Their relationship comes under threat with the imminent awakening of one spouse and deteriorating health of the other.

Whilst the plot is not startlingly original, Hur Jin-ho slowly and subtly draws a tremendous amount of emotional tension from a straightforward narrative with minimal dialogue. He’s greatly assisted by Korean heartthrob Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye-jin, who deliver terrifically understated performances that perfectly match the film’s mood. There’s no clumsy handling of the serendipitous situation either, the events being played out at a perfect pace, allowing the audience to be progressively drawn into the drama.

Only the hardest of hearts could be resistant to this film, a patiently told and thoroughly involving melodrama.

April Snow is showing on 17 and 19 August at Filmhouse.

[Trans] – ‘April Snow’ as a masterpiece was born (review)

    - 10/9 by Benny Lau in Xin志、新鮮 ISSUE 001 (Hong Kong)
translated & posted by Cam in Quilt freeboard

I have always been very fond of ‘Director Hur’s work. So I was psychologically prepared for his ‘slow’ style before entering the theatre. ‘April Snow’ is no exception, it fascinates the audience by slowly leading them into the theme/story. The script and the cinematic photography were just splendid. Gradually it follows the course of the main characters’ thoughts, their loves and hates, rights and wrongs, betrayals and morals, love sentiment between men and woman, and the ultimate love between husbands and wives. In addition, the characters' resigned emotions of which one cannot let go, were portrayed completely, profoundly and meticulously. You don’t lose concentration because of the slow rhythm. Instead you find yourself going to the hearts of the main characters or stepping outside the square as an outsider and asking yourself whether you had the similar point of view and the same bitter experience? Personally I believe ‘April Snow’ is director Hur’s best work.

The acting talents of BYJ and SYJ were another pleasant surprise. The film did not use magnificent backgrounds. BYJ’s character is no longer a prince charming and SYJ is not just a beautiful girl. The two characters are not packaged with dazzling clothes. Everything is very ordinary. There is very little dialogue. The main leads mostly depend on the eyes, expressions and body language to show the world their innermost feelings. This places the main leads acting skills into a real test, but they handled it appropriately. Their purpose is to really portray the lives of two ordinary characters. If one thought that BYJ & SYJ's success were advantages by their physical appearance, ‘April Snow’ may change this perception for both of them. Honestly speaking after the view of the film, as a writer, I have the utmost respect and admiration for BYJ.

I remembered when final curtain of the screening was slowly shutting , I unrestrainedly stood up and started clapping. Whilst leaving the theatre, the film continues to trigger many very deep levels of thoughts and associations. ‘April Snow ‘ is definitely the most loved Korean movie on my list. Personally, I think ‘April Snow’ is a must see movie for the married ones and those that have been in a relationship for a long time. We may have all gone through or have came across in our mind, the same emotions and feelings. ’April Snow’ may not be a big hit in the box office, but surely it will become another master piece among all the Korean movies.

<Trans> Details of Press Conference on July 23
    From Brokore Entertainment Information
Japanese to English translation by flowerbossa

On July 23, a press conference announcing the opening of the traditional Korean cuisine restaurant “Gosireh” (location- Siroganedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo, scheduled for opening on August 10) was held, attracting the keen attention of 60 people from the press. A “kosa” ceremony praying for the safety and success of the restaurant was also held on this day with the attendance of Bae Yong Joon-san.

A little after 4 p.m. the press conference began with Kim Tei-san (note: IMX artist and MC at the “April Snow” Reunion event) acting as MC.

First, Sohn Il Hyong, President of IMX, made a speech saying, “I hope “Gosireh” will come to be recognized as the finest restaurant that serves Korean cuisine in Japan. Your support will be appreciated.”
Following this, the President of Smart Kitchen and Director of A-Kitchen (operating body of “Gosireh”), Chung Kyeon Geon explained the concept of the restaurant, “the spirit of hospitality” and Professor Han Bok Jin who served as food advisor offered his explanation on the menu.

According to President Sohn, the staff held many tasting events and spent a year before the menu was finalized. The food does not contain artificial ingredients of any kind such as MSG and this is a point Bae Yong Joon-san who participated in the project from the development of the concept strongly insisted on. They offer food which includes ingredients which is gentle to the body such as Platycodi Radix and Codonopsis lanceolata (translator’s note; don’t quote me on these names!!!!) – wild vegetables and traditional Chinese medicine unique to Korea which can rarely be obtained in Japanese supermarkets.

When asked whether Bae Yong Joon-san plans to visit the restaurant regularly, the president answered, “He would probably like to, but because it would cause unpleasantness for the neighbors in the vicinity if his visits cause confusion, I hope that he would limit his visits to about once a year. I will do my best to report on how it is doing as frequently as possible.” On this day too, there were many fans crowing the vicinity even though his visit was not announced.

When Bae Yong Joon-san appeared in front of the guests to perform the “kosa” praying for the safety and success of the restaurant, the flash from the cameras of the press went off at once, and the air was charged with a certain amount of excitement although the atmosphere was solemn.

Bae Yong Joon-san was dressed in a black suit with a white tie, wore rimless glasses and had his hair tied in a loose ponytail. His appearance gave the impression of being a bit sharper than the time he visited Japan last August. With the unchanging gentle smile of his, he gave the following speech.

“Hello, everyone. I am Bae Yong Joon.
It has been a while since the last time I have seen you, and I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to say hello to you on this occasion. I am very grateful that all of you are showing such strong interest in this restaurant.

I would be most happy if “Gosireh”, which I have the pleasure of introducing to you today, will serve as a place for cultural exchange in Asia through the introduction of Korean culture.

“Gosireh” is a small starting point in introducing the food culture which is a part of our basic clothing, food and housing culture. The word “Gosireh” indicates the act which was performed in the old days to express appreciation towards God who gave his blessings with rain which is so essential for the crops, and also the act of offering the first bite of the meal. It was my wish to introduce to you the taste and flavor of Korean cuisine with the same feelings of appreciation and sincerity.

I hope to continue to introduce Korean culture to Japan, and the wonderful culture of Japan to Korea in a similar fashion. Moreover, it is my intention to make continuous efforts in participating in projects which will have a positive influence on cultural exchange in Asia. During this trip, I am very sorry for not being able to meet with my family who always show me such support and affection. I will present myself in my best form through my work, so I would like to ask you to wait. Again, I would like to express my appreciation towards everyone who kindly came to this event. I wish you all of you much happiness and good health.”

After the speech, the “kosa” for the safety and success of “Gosireh” was performed.
Placed in front of a pedestal holding rice, azuki bean cake, fish (dried cod), pork, water, rice, apples, persimmons, jujube, chestnuts, and pears, is a container holding rice with a pine leaf standing in it and a pot containing liquor. The person performing the ritual bows twice on the mat in front of the pedestal, pressing his forehead on the ground.

A “kosa” is a common ceremony in Korea, performed in such occasions as the start of the filming of a movie or drama by all members of staff and cast participating in the work.
At the photo session after the ceremony, Bae Yong Joon-san gave the brightest of his smiles as if he was relieved that he was able to perform the ceremony smoothly.

Though the time was short, the soft and warm aura of Bae Yong Joon-san enveloped the venue, and with his aura still lingering in the air, the ceremony came to a close. “Gosireh” the traditional Korean cuisine restaurant in which Bae Yong Joon-san served as the general advisor is scheduled for opening on August 10! How about going to the restaurant yourself to taste the Korean food that he feels so passionately about?

    Bae Yong-joon, Businessman Extraordinaire

Everyone's favorite son-in-law Bae Yong-joon should soon have the letters CEO on his name card. He is already regarded as something of an entertainment magnate as the largest shareholder of a Kosdaq-listed company and runs three restaurants at home and abroad.

The actor is the major shareholder of entertainment firm Keyeast with a 42.2 percent stake worth more than W50 billion (US$1=W950) at Friday's closing price. Bae bought Keyeast in March when it came close to being de-listed, changing its name from Ottowintech. He is believed to be managing some W80 billion, including his investments in restaurants and his Japanese agency.

Bae paid W7 billion in taxes last year. Softbank Korea, Bae's co-investor in Keyeast, says the investment decision came at the actor's proposal, who therefore "naturally" owns the largest stake. However, Bae will not directly take part in management, Softbank Korea President Greg Moon said.

But unlike other celebrities who just lend their name to business companies for promotion effects, Bae does now take a key part in the company's management. Most Keyeast executives including CEO Bae Sung-woong are the actor's former managers and have worked with him for some 10 years. For two or three years, Bae had been telling them he wants to start his own business to promote cooperation with entertainment companies of other Asian countries and thus sustain the Korean pop culture boom abroad.

Bae is also expanding his restaurant business. He established restaurants and cafes capitalizing on the well-being trend since opening a restaurant called Smart Kitchen last year. Then came the traditional Korean room Tea Loft at the main branch of Lotte Department Store and health food restaurant Gorilla In the Kitchen in Shinsa-dong in Gangnam, Seoul this April. A high-end Korean restaurant is scheduled to open in Tokyo next month.

Known as a perfectionist, the actor underlines and annotates his screenplays until they fall to pieces. Photographers who worked with him praise this skill at striking the perfect pose in every picture, none going to waste. Another business talent is his ability to make friends with anyone. People close to the actor say he is also good at spotting a lucrative opportunity.

Yet there are voices saying it is premature to conclude Bae is a leading business talent. The head of a management company admits that Bae has so far been successful in everything he has touched, but cautions it remains to be seen that was due to talent or the allure of his fame.

Default 2007 DRAMA IN THE MAKING

Kwon Ohkyeong posted this on the Talk Box of BYJ's official home

'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi', MBC decided to air it early next year
    [My Daily]7/11/06 19:02

The drama 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi'(script by Song Jina, Directed by Kim JOnghak), which becomes a topic of talks as the 'Korean Current star' BYJ takes starring role in it, was confirmed to be aired on MBC in early next year.

A high official in Drama Department at MBC revealed on 11, "We are in the status of signing a memorandum of understanding with Kim Jonghak Production, producer of the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' recently, and it will be aired in a form of 24 episodes drama on MBC early next year,"

The 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi', which began first shooting in Jeju in past March, is a drama depicting a biography of the Great King Kwang-gae-to of the Kogooryeo, and although it was predicted to be aired on MBC, this is the first time that the broadcasting company officially revealed its position.

This official told, "Although we want the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' to be programmed in early next year as the follow up drama of the 'Joomong' which is gaining popularity at present, however, a detailed schedule has not been out, " and "The 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' will become a history drama, emphasizing fantasy characteristics, different from the 'Joomong'."

The 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' is a work where writer Song Gina and Kim Jonghak PD of the 'Sandglass' join hands, including BYJ as the main character, the Great King Kwang-gae-to, Moon sori, Choi Minsoo, Chung Jinyoung, Park Sangwon, Yoon Taeyoung, etc. are scheduled to appear in major roles.

Default Moon So-Ri Cast in TV Blockbuster 태왕사신기 (The Four Gods)

I thought 2006 was the year of the Dog, but it seems it'll be the year of Goguryeo after all, at least on Korean TV.

Goguryeo (37 BC–668) was part of the Korean Three Kingdoms, yet in the last decade few Dramas ever focused on this period, mostly covering the Joseon Dynasty. But in 2006, several TV Dramas will use Goguryeo as a background. We have MBC's 주몽 (Jumong) - formerly titled 삼한지 (The Three Kingdoms), starring Song Il-Guk as Jumong, who (allegedly) founded the Kingdom in 37 BC, after conquering Biryu, Haengin and Okjeo in less than a decade; SBS' 연개소문 (淵蓋蘇文, General Yon Gae Somun), which brings back Yoo Dong-Geun to Historical Dramas as the man who killed King Youngryu in 642, causing the beginning of the kingdom's demise, which at the time was embroiled in a war with the Tang Dynasty, allied with Goguryeo rivals Shilla; also in production are 대무신왕 (Daemu Shin Wang) and 고선지 (General Go Seon-Ji), but details are scarce. The most exciting of them all might just be MBC's 24 Episodes Fusion Drama 태왕사신기 (The Four Gods).

Telling the story of King Gwanggaeto the great, the most legendary ruler of the period, the Drama has a budget of almost 40 Billion Won, and everything about it says 'big'. First is the main character itself: thanks to Gwanggaeto's expansion plans, in less than two decades Goguryeo destroyed its foes, conquering thousands of villages and dozens of cities, decimating tribes who had the misfortune to cross paths with them, and scared the other two Kingdoms Shilla and Baekje enough to severely hamper their development. Another huge point of interest is Kim Jong-Hak, producer of classics like 모래시계 (The Sandglass) and 여명의 눈동자 (Eyes of Dawn), who will return to the small screen working with his favorite writer, the great Song Ji-Na. The Drama is building a mammoth set in Jeju Island, and Kim Jong-Hak Productions expect to sell distribution rights to around 50 countries. WETA Design, currently involved in the making of Bong Joon-Ho's 괴물 (The Host), will be responsible for the visual effects and CGI, which will cost around 10 Billion Won.

I left the best bit for last on purpose: the cast. We reported back in August that Bae Yong-Joon and Choi Min-Soo were already cast, along with Jung Jin-Young of 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown), but the leading heroine role was rumoured to go to Shim Eun-Ha. Producer Kim failed to convince Shim, who recently married and seems perfectly happy living outside of the entertainment circle. So they got someone else. A 'replacement'? Anything but, folks...

Moon So-Ri. Yep, one of the best, most respected actresses on the planet will make her debut on the small screen, in the Drama which starts shooting late next month. After theater, short films, art house and commercial fare, she finally completed the circle. It's inevitable expectations for the show will grow even more, as she's playing Yonsama's love interest. The Drama is slated to start airing around the end of 2006.

Default Yoon Taeyoung will debut in history drama as a rival of BYJ.

    [Ilgan Sports]2/8/06 10:42

Yoon Taeyoung was cast as the character of Yeon Hogae, a nobleman in Kogooryo in the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi'(script by Song Jina, directed by Kim Jonghak), the most talked about drama among the dramas to be aired in this year, so that he put the period mark in casting for the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' which experienced long period of labor pain.

Yeon Hogae is the character who conflicts with Damdeok(The Great King Kwang-gae to) acted by BYJ. He is a nobility in Kogooryeo, and is the son of powerful courtier Yeon Garyeo, who monopolize government in the position of Makrigi (Prime minister) and he is full of resources and has bravery, so that he became the rival of prince Damdeok from the youth period.

It is a character who loves Keeha(Moon Sori), an ambitious person as well as female priest, and who exiles to China after Damdeok was enthroned and doing the villain character until the last including threatening Damdeok as he becomes a general. Although the production crew of the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' initially planned to appear King Ahshin in Baekje as a rival of The Great King Kwang-gae-to, in the end of discussion by Kim Jonghak PD and script writer Song Jina, they have changed the setting for the domestic power struggle in Kogooryeo as the major conflict so that Yeon Hogae came to appear as the main character.

Saying, "Because I like the character so much, I gave O.K. as soon as I got the offere," Yoon Taeyoung voluntarily began training in horse riding and martial arts. Yoon Taeyoung, who boasted unusual ability in martial art in recent film 'Mr. Socrates', is getting training in horse riding at present with help from people he knows. With that, the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' will finish the luxurious castings of BYJ to begin with and Moon Sori, Jeong Jinyoung, Park Sangwon, & Choi Minsoo, etc. and will begin shooting at last. Cheongam Entertainment, production company of the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' told that the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' team will hold Gosa(Well wishing ceremony) while entire casts gather in Jeju Island on coming 28, and will shoot for the first time. An official at the Cheongam Entertainment told, "Although open sets in Jeju Island is scheduled to be finished by the middle of the next month, will will shoot the out door scenes in Jeju Island from 28."

I agree. He is gearing up for his new TV Series (after WLS 2002, he didn't appear in any TV Series. Instead he focused on two movies and one photo album) with the long hair and also shaped up to look like the King.

Thought this thread was too outdated..so I selected some updates to share here. I am glad you like them! =)

Actually lots happened since 2003 (most posts before me are from 2003). I'll post some other updates when I get the chance later. Others who has info, please share them too....

    Hi Tweety365,

hehe..don't stay feeling guilty..you can do something about this thread..ha! hint hint.

The new project due sometime early 2007 is a tv series...will be on MBC. He returns to the tube as the lead in the 24-episode "The Great King and Four Gods," a historical drama about an emperor from the Goguryeo Dynasty who lived from A.D.A.D. 375-413.

ha! Many are looking forward to this series because it has been a long time since Bae Yong Joon is in a tv series....Since Winter Love Sonata! besides this series is also the first korean drama that will be filmed completely prior to being broadcasted. Usually korean dramas will filmed as they are broadcasted. That shows how much preparation is going into this drama. They are currently filming in Jeju Island.

[Translation of report from the VOD] ~

Drama 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi', having further more topic of talks as Korean Current star Mr. BYJ takes leading character, held Gosa in Jeju yesterday(16th) and will begin full scale shooting now.

The 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' attracted attention as team of 'Sand Glass', popular drama in the past '95 has joined together again. Director Kim Jonghak and writer Song Gina of the drama 'Sand Glass' which has recorded an amazing viewing rate at 64% at the time, are again holding hands. And also the big caliber actors were in the cast including Choi Minsoo and Park Sangwon who performed passionately at that time.

Also, the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' is a big project drama which is pushing forward for distribution in over 90 nations in the world, and it has been getting attention already from the production stage.

This drama with Jeju Island as its main stage, had built sets, investing about 13 billion won, inside the Myosanbong Tourist Area in the North Jeju County.

13 billion won for the sets alone, and the guarantee Mr. BYJ is to get has been known to be in the range of several billion won. The total production cost of the drama seems to go beyond the production cost for blockbuster film in our country. From the aspect of its scale at least, it is not behind from any other drama which have been produced until now. No, it is not that it is not behind, but the expression of ''overwhelming' is fitting better.

Any way, the 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi', will shoot for 10 months from now and we will be able to watch it only from early 2007, next year.

The interests from fans, Japanese fans in particular, are already very hot.

At the Gosa that was held on yesterday, not less than over 400 Japanese fans have gathered in Jeju Island in order to see Mr. BYJ. Because of that, they say that even the police commandos went out to the airport.

Yes, enthusiastic fans in Japan. As they are to that extent of coming to wedding ceremony of Kim Namjoo-Kim Seungwoo in order to see Mr. BYJ, come to think of that, it is not a surprising thing.

I remember at that time. That is the time of shooting the film 'Oe Chool, when Japanese fans never stopped their steps to the sets all the way through shooting.

In this time, thanks to the sets built in Jeju Island, it is expected that Jeju Island will enjoy special demand of Japanese tourists, special demand of BYJ.

Although it is the drama 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi' having many factors to pay attention here and there, first the power Mr. BYJ is leading like this is tremendously huge.

Mr. BYJ, probably because of that, he felt his thoughts that he was trembling and tense at the Gosa yesterday. To Mr. BYJ ~ Please do not tremble, and it will be fine if you show good acting and wonderful appearance as you have been showing until now.

The Korean Current star power shown by Mr. BYJ in this time also, we will expect to see how much it would be.
