    SPOILERS AHEAD.......................

    1. there's one part where ennis was telling jack of his bitter past, when he was a child and he saw a dead man. what's the story behind that? i don't understand the effect of that incident on him.
    2. how did jack died? was he killed by his wife?
    3. did i understand correctly? in that final meeting of ennis and jack, jack was saying that they should leave the place and live in brokeback...start anew and all, but ennis was saying he can't because he still has to support his family. is that what they were crying about?

    strawberry,

Can u not put the spoiler itself in the same sentence as the spoiler warning?

    That's a pretty useless, don't u think?

According to Ennis's dad, the dead man was a homosexual. He and another gay man lived together. But some town people, abhored by this fact, tortured the man to death. This is what written in the short story (which is what Ennis told Jack):

"They'd took a tire iron to him, spurred him up, drug him around by his dick until it pulled off, just bloody pulp. What the tire iron done looked like pieces a burned tomatoes all over him, nose tore down from skiddin on gravel."

This incident made Ennis never able to move forward and make a life together with Jack, because he was afraid he would end up like that dead man. I think this also made Ennis a repressed man. He can't act on his feelings. The most he is able and willing to do is having that occasional get together with Jack.

The book didn't make it clear how he died. It's written from the POV of Ennis and Ennis believed Jack was murdered. It might only be Ennis's imagination. Ang Lee choose to believe that Jack was murdered. So, in the movie, Jack did die of gay-bashing.

Who killed him was also not clear. A few viewers thought his father in-law might have done it. From the messages in imdb Brokeback Mountain Board (busiest BBM board ever), no one seems to think his wife did it and I don't think so either. His wife might be just lying to cover up how he died as her husband dying of gay-bashing is certainly not a good thing to spread about given the mindset of people during that time. I see no reason for her to do it. She doesn't seem like such a violent and cruel person and she's genuinely fond of her husband eventhough they have grown apart through the years. Look at how she tried to hold back her smile when Jack put her father in place.

They were crying because their relationship is going downhill. They are frustrated with the state of their lives now. Ennis all alone, achieving nothing, family ruined and dirt poor. Jack is frustrated because after waiting for 20 years for Ennis to take their relationship to the next level, Ennis still refuses to do so. Jack is not contented with the very few and far between get together they have. Jack wanted them to live together. That is the basis of their fight.

    I've always wondered.

    1. Why was this particular gay movie so well-received and able to move to mainstream cinema but other gay movies couldn't? I'm sure there are other good gay movies out there. Any thoughts?

    2. If this movie has a
     click to show spoilers
, will it still be so memorable and well-received by the mainstream audiences? Will it be as touching?

    This movie was touching?

I guess that "Brokeback Mountain" just came at the right time. Before then, people were still too uncomfortable with the subject matter.

I think many gay movies are made by gay directors and/or actors. I'm not sure if this is true, but I would think that for a team of rather high profile "outsiders" to make such a film, perhaps makes people take it more seriously.

    Ah, such a great movie

I thought it was overrated. I've seen better from Ang Lee.
