Default Name your 3 favorite concepts in Jin Yong's novels

What are your 3 favorite concepts/ideas from Jin Yong's novels that you find particularly refreshing/engaging/outstanding/innovative? PLEASE TRY TO LIST NOVEL-SPECIFIC ITEMS. Mine are:

    1) Leaders betraying their subordinates in Smiling Proud Wanderers (it's almost always the other way around)

    2) The mysterious process of Rewarding the Kind, Punishing the Unkind in Ode to Gallantry

    3) Above all, the notion of introducing the most prominent protagonist midway into the story, in DGSD.

    1) mysterious characters with unknown backgrounds. (SM, Dugu etc)

    2) Falling of cliffs, falling into caves to find some hidden, super power manuals.
( 9 Yang, DY in DGSD etc)

    3) Almost always someone better than the main character.
    (hsds, dgsd)

I don't think that's quite true, unless you are specifically referring to protagonists only.

    Modifying Tazzy's response (no 2):

Protagonist finding/learning martial arts by chance as oppose to purposefully seeking it/primary goal of finding it (such as OYF seeking 9Yin/JMZ seeking 6MSJ).

    DY
    XZ
    LHC
    ZWJ
    YG
GJ - (even XL18Z was set up for him, whereas YK rigorously seeked OYF to be his sifu)

For me, i enjoyed the similarity in both XAJH and HSDS in the reversal of the 'righteous' and 'demonic'.

Also how some characters are good at everything such as HYS.

And how DSGD presented the idea of 'there people outside of people' 'there are skys above skys' (literally translated, someone pls help). Initially, evil 3rd appeared almighty and powerful, but gradually waned to 5th to 6th teir.

1.) charismatic, likable villains with redeeming qualities(Ouyang Feng, Ren Woxing, Li Mochou, Mei Chaofeng)

2.) Blending of history and historical figures with the novel (Condor Trilogy, DoMD, etc)

3.) Fights that I can almost see when reading them (Linghu Chong's fights, Brightness Peak Battle)
Underneath the fluffly, cudly exterior lies the tormented and complex creature known as the panda.

Not from birth, that's true, but he was among the few Jin Yong main characters to debut "fully formed", so to speak. We never went through Kiu Fung's martial arts development with him step by step as we did with Gwok Jing, Yeung Gor, Cheung Mo Gei, Ling Wu Chung, and others. As soon as he appeared, Kiu Fung was already one of wulin's baddest mofos.

Also of interest is JY hardly start of the novel with the main character, he always establish minor characters first and the setting of the story before introducing the main character.

Are there examples in JY novels contrary to that?

DY is all I can think of, but even then you don't realise he's a main character until the 2nd chapter.

Wasn't Ling Wu Chung there in STATE OF DIVINITY from the get go? Also, Yeung Gor showed up pretty quickly in ROCH (not Page 1, necessarily, but at least within the first chapter).

    You Tan Zhi.

    1. Moves (in fights) that don't make any sense physically and logically when you analyze them in details but you still think that they do while reading the novel.

    2. "Gold in sand" characters, as my mum put it once, meaning characters that appear to be average/boring/whatever but as the story progresses, their great qualities are unlocked and they become your favourites. Guo Jing is one example.

    3. Dickhead characters that you hate, but can't help enjoying discussing them with others. Obviously Yang Guo is an example.

    4. Protagonists getting over revenge for the greater good.

Only in adaptations like the Mainland one.

In the novel, the entire first part is dedicated to LPZ.

    1. I'll go with PJ for the first one: the concept of "Master betrayed his students & clan" - SOD / Smilling Proud Wanderers

    2. Anti-hero Theory - WXB in DoM

    3. Bad person doesn't necessary produce a bad descendant concept - YH & YG in ROCH

Compassion for others is more important that being able to kick someone else's butt.
