Yes, internal energy does exist in real life. However Mr. JY's wuxia is not all true. He made internal TOO STRONG. There is no XL18Z or 9 Yin in real life. It said in the end of the book that these were made up by JY.
However internal energy harming people is true. Yang Unbeatable in the 1860s or somewhere around there was able to use Tai Chi to pratically rule the martial art society. He had internal energy.
What i'm more curious about is lightness kung fu, can qi really be used to help people jump higher to the point of floatation?
the real wu lin is much more bloody than jin yong ones . Its something like japanese samurai.
I don't know about floating, but i bet ya chi can help a person jumps real high. I read in a shaolin book once (not sure if it was true) that by breathing a certain way, a chi user can make his/her body lighter, thus that person can jump higher than normal.Originally Posted by zhou bo tong

What "wulin" that did actually exist was likely just a different version of today's criminal underworld. There were no noble superheroes going around protecting the weak from aggressors. Acts of heroism and nobility are glamourized for novels which changed the 36 (not so noble) bandits into the heroic outlaws of the water marsh, for example.
I have no doubt that rigorous martial arts training improves a person's power immensely, but I have my doubts about chi. A person may be able to perform a superhuman deed sparingly, but if chi was as great as certain people claimed it to be, then such people should be able to use their chi to do amazing things all the time.
