Default East Heretic Wong Yerk See as a heroic figure?

When it came time to measure the heroism of the Greats, Yau Chui Gei opined to Gwok Jing that only North Beggar Hung 7 Gung deserved the description of "hero." East Heretic Wong Yerk See certainly did not fit the standard requirements of a hero. He certainly cannot be regarded as a hero in the same sense that Gwok Jing or even Yeung Gor was.

That being said, Wong Yerk See was far from a truly evil man. Did he have heroic tendencies in him? Despite his anti-social attitudes, he did seem to have sense of decency and justice within him (although he was loath to show it). Occassionally, he performed good deeds or punished the truly evil, although sometimes, these acts did not arise out of purely altruistic impulses.

More of an Anti-Hero, I think.

He was definitely that, but were there also traces of authentic heroism in his character?

He is patriotic. But he didn't devote his life or talent for his country till the battle of Xiangyang. He's just too self-righteous and conceited to do so. Kinda like current politcians who preach patriotism and defense yet they didn't go to active service when they were needed.
Underneath the fluffly, cudly exterior lies the tormented and complex creature known as the panda.

Only in LOCH '82. In the novel, he knew that she was definitely dead from the get go.

What did Hong Qigong do to earn this honor?

A lifetime of upholding justice, protecting the innocent, and fighting evil.

Mind you, it kinda came with the territory/position. The beggar clan was a righteous clan upholding justice, and their leaders were selected for that trait among and prob above other qualities.

HYS's personal history also influenced his anti-GJtype heroic nature.

Regarding patriotism and fighting for the country, HYS prob saw a lost cause, and did not bother fighting for it. GJ, however, fights for what is right, regardless of the outcome. Its almost like GJ dares to dream and fight for it, whereas HYS is too practical and intelligent for blind faith/hope.

Apart from his flawed character, HYS is the man in everything else. Who else can compete with his overall abilities.

This one has actually been described in the 3rd edition changes by Athena.

    17) Huang Yaoshi's grandfather was a government official during the Song Gaozong reign, this grandfather of his petitioned several times that Yue Fei was innocent. In the end he was demoted, but continued to fight for Yue Fei's innocence calling up the people to stand together and defend Yue Fei. Finally was captured and beheaded for stirring up the public, his family was banned to Yunnan. It was there that Huang Yaoshi grew up.
He learnt both literary and martial arts, he studied literature under his father's tutelage. It is not mentioned who taught him martial arts. As he grew up he felt that his family was wronged and often argued with his father about so-called loving and protecting one's emperor etc. Against his father's wishes he did not participate in the provincial examinations, and in the end (how very ironic) his father disowned Huang Yaoshi. Starting from then he roamed the realm and wrote rebellious poems, texts on the walls of all government institutions. The government sent out people to track him down, but in vain.

He was called the Heretic Hero by the common people, later on it became East Heretic.
HYS was disillusioned by the weak Song government, due to the persecutions experienced by his ancestors. He had never wanted to become patriot hero since he was young.

Either he or Yang Guo could have killed Huo Du with their Tanzhi Shentong. Huang Rong couldn't tell the different between the two projectiles.

    Huh..no. HYS killed Huo Du.

If you are referring to the temple incident, it was Ni Mo Xing and YG killed him.

Huo Du was hit simultaneously by two pebbles, pinged from two flagpoles far apart. Huang Rong guessed one of them must have been from her father, but she couldn't tell which, indicating that both users had achieved a similar proficiency in Tanzhi Shentong.
