*************
In the 61st year of the reign of Kangxi in the Qing dynasty, the country was run well with the officials in the court and the martials in the battlefield, historically, this period was known as the Great Times of Kangxi , but due to the large number of princes all fighting for the throne, there came a nervous time when it was time to choose an heir. Kangxi’s fourth son Yinzhing (later Emperor Yongzheng), with his determined nature and forceful approach, together with his knowledge of the control of power won through in the fight for the throne and ascended to the throne in the 61st year of Kangxi’s reign, the next year (1723 AD) was then named after his own reign and became the first year of Yongzheng: after the ascension, he worked and planned for the future and made the Qing dynasty continue to flourish and run into another prosperous era.
In the 13th year of Yongzheng, the 8th Earl plotted a coup against the government with the aim of forcing Yongzheng to hand over his reign, but Yongzheng used his intelligence to overcome the evil plans and led himself and his realm out of trouble: except that Han maiden Lui Sei Leung could not put aside the hatred of the end of the Han rule and vowed to rid the Qing and reinstate the Ming dynasty, but in her plan to murder Yongzheng, there was a change in the wind and clouds and the two are plunged into darkness, as changes take place in time and space, they are sent into the future and modern day Hong Kong.
Yongzheng and Leung are sent from the darkness into the scene of a traffic accident and the two are injured and taken to hospital. After they awaken, they are shocked and frightened by their surroundings and are stunned. By a great coincidence, Yongzheng takes the place of mainland immigrant Lee Dai Ha and is taken home by Ha’s uncle Bo Fei; on the other hand, Leung’s martial art skill is spotted by a martial arts master, who helps her to get an ID card and accepts her into the troupe. Later, the troupe arrives in Hong Kong to do a display and Leung meets again with Yongzheng, confirming with him that due to a change in time and space, they had been brought to the modern day, when he realises that he cannot return to the Qing dynasty, he is happy to stay as Ha’s identity and make a life for himself in Hong Kong.
Ha works hard and learns to become a modern person. He manages to find himself entering the enterprise of Shum Siu Hong as a junior worker and he finds that although times have changed, people’s hearts as just the same and that Hong’s sons and daughters are all fighting for the inheritance of the enterprise and plotting against each other, this makes him think of his own experiences when he was fighting with his brothers for the throne, Hong must also deal with affairs between his three wives and cannot enjoy his family life. Ha sympathises with Hong because of his experiences and through this they gradually develop a very intriguing father-son relationship.
After leaving the martial arts troupe, Leung still holds onto her ambition of murdering Ha to fulfil her wish, but she finds herself out on the streets and has a hard time, but she still holds onto her bold and honourable values. By chance, she meets with Hong who is being attacked and she steps out to help him and rescues him, although she runs away after this because she is chasing after Ha, in Hong’s heart she is his saviour. Ha tries to enforce to Leung the reality that they cannot return to the Qing dynasty and even if she kills him, this is of no use to anyone, Leung can only face up to the truth and put aside her differences with Ha. By another stroke of fate, Leung meets up with Ha again and he thinks that she has been hurt during her rescue of him, he decides to employ her as his personal bodyguard.
On the other hand, Ha uses his cunning to pave his way up the employment ladder and becomes the right hand man to Hong’s third son Shum Yat Lai, helping him to create some successes in the business, however Ha gradually learns of Lai’s own agenda and feels he is not a good master, and he finds that Hong’s fourth daughter Shum Yat Ngoi is genuine and is good to her staff and totally committed to the company, so he decides to help her instead, and pushes her towards the route of becoming heir to the realm of the business enterprise. Leung and Ha share so many experiences and Leung learns to get to know Ha again and finds that he is not as ruthless as is recorded in the history books, Ha is touched by Leung’s innocent devotion as the two start to develop affections for each other. Through the guidance of Ha, Ngoi’s performance in the business catches Hong’s attentions and Ngoi had early on succumbed to Ha’s intelligence and fallen in love with him. Leung feels that through her work, protecting Hong, she is having to visit the high class social venues and occasions and feels this is in conflict with her own personality, moreover she is rumoured as Hong’s fourth wife, in protest for her innocence, Leung resigns. At this time, Hong must prepare for his retirement and places a lot of responsibility onto Ha, with the aim of making him son-in-law and future heir. Hong asks Ha to enter the bargain and promises him that as soon as he marries Ngoi, the inheritance of the company will fall into their hands, but after all they have been through, Ha realises that Leung is the one whom he really loves. At the end, after much thought and consideration by Ha, he decides to leave Hong’s company and the arena of fame and fortune, returning to the basic life and pursuing a new life of real meaning with Leung.
