    Remember his sad face when HD said to him:" When 2 people know each other too much,...", don't you? I feel at that moment HD has no heart to make him hurt.
    I make you misunderstood . I mean HD doesn't have the heart to hurt LY. When HD said this sentence, you're right, it's because he's selfish. But when he looked at LY's very sad face, and heard LY said: "Me, I feel good...'', he felt a little uneasy. Then HD tried to make LY happy. LY's pure can make HD's heart touched. It's also in the seperating, HD is heartless with LY once again. But the way Hu Jun acting HD, makes me feel that HD at that time is also very sad. Not because of the separating, seems HD is sinful for breaking LY's heart. Anyway, HD loves LY but he doesn't realise that, he never thinks that he needs LY, till they meet again after a long time. Hu Jun is excellent.
    The english subtitle didn't translate that part of the dialog accurately. The real chinese dialogue is even more hurtful. Handong didn't say "If u don't play with me, who are u going to play with". The actual dialogue is "If u don't let me play u, who are u going to let play u." In the subtitle, it denotes that Handong and Lan Yu are equal, they have fun together. But the real chinese dialogue, it's very degrading. It denotes that Handong is playing Lan Yu. Paying money for the right to play Lan Yu.
    When I read these lines, I feel a little sad. Poor Lan Yu. Hik hik... Does the sentence "If u don't let me play u, who are u going to let play u." means LY only needs money, and if LY is not with HD, he will have to be with someone for money?
    I really feel sad for Lan Yu at that moment. After Handong gave the "When 2 people know each other too much,...", speech, Lan Yu asked, "We are not that close yet, right?". So afraid that Handong will end the relationship.
    Yes, the dialogue in this scene is so touched.

We see later Liu Zheng was able to find a part-time job in a construction site for Lan Yu. So, the pimping is actually unnecessary.
    I think that LY is not Liu Zheng's friend's brother, because when Liu zheung said: "He's my friend's brother", HD laughed and asked:"You have got many friends?", means HD doesn't believe what LZ said. So maybe LY and LZ haven't got any relationship. It's just the money.
    LY believes LZ through HD. When LY and HD are couple, LY certainly believes HD's friend (LZ is HD's close friend). LY said LZ is a nice man, it's just because he's rather trusting of people. I think that.

    Well, the reality is not like that. Lan Yu can support himself (he already has 3 par-time jobs by that time). But that is roughly what Handong meant when he said those words. He makes it sounds like Lan Yu is a kept-boy or a prostitute who gives him service for his money. Very degrading. Too bad you don't understand chinese. I can't translate this dialogue properly.

    Actually, I think Liu Ye acted too feminine in a few scenes, like the scene where he greeted Handong Happy New Year with a kiss. Before that kissing scene, we were shown Lan Yu walking from the bed to the bathroom. His posture and gesture a bit too femine.
    This scene is so lovely...
    Let's talk about Liu Ye as Lan Yu. I've read somewhere that Liu Ye's acting is sweeter than a girl. His description is so soft and tender, just like water. Suppose an actress tries to do like him, she'll fallen. Just imagine... If it's a girl with the posture like Liu Ye, does it as interesting? I myself feel these scene a little fun, to me he's like a cute and gentle boy, not like a girl so much.

    Why would I imagine an actress playing Lan Yu? Lan Yu is a boy. A girl playing Lan Yu is out of the question and irrelevant. Why do u always want to bring up how a girl playing Lan Yu would be awful to support Liu Ye's feminine potrayal? Lan Yu did look feminine in that scene. Yeah, it's a cute playful scene, but he still looks feminine to me.

    Well, to answer your question, a girl with that posture will not be as interesting because that posture will look natural in a girl and so will not be anything unusual. But I can imagine the scene to be equally cute and the girl equally adorable. Honestly.

    Anyway, no need to convert me to your way of thought lah . Liking the movie doesn't mean I have to like every bit of it and has no critisism. Same the Liu Ye's potrayal of Lan Yu. I like his overall potrayal of the character. Lan Yu is my favourite character in the movie and Liu Ye played a big part for this. Just 1 or 2 scenes I felt he's too feminine.

    I don't want to convert you to my way of thought, honestly. Only want to say what I think. Next time, I'll only answer with quote when it's necessary.

    This film is sucessful because of the 2 leading actors. Besides, must include the talent of director Stanley Quan. When I watch the clip underneath, I realise that they must think very hard to produce those perfect camera angles. They even pay attention to actors'clothes, and the colours...

    Hi season of fun. Haha, Glad that we get u interested in the movie and novel.

    You can read the novel here (warning: beware of explicit sex scenes) :
    http://www.bookdns.com/dangdai/dangd...beijstory.html
    http://www.shuku.net:8082/novels/beijing/beijing.html
    http://www.nifty.org/nifty/gay/begin...beijing-story/

    As for the DVD. I don't know where to buy. It's hard to get it in shops since it's a pretty old movie. I have problem getting it locally too. So, I ordered it from yesasia. sensasia also have. But if u want to buy the uncut version, make sure the movie length is not 86 mins. 86 mins is the cut version. It should be longer. Also the HK version published by Universe Laser (HK), although movie length not stated, is also the cut version.

    Here's some of the covers of the uncut version:

    Why don't we post some photos of Lan Yu?

    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://www.dvdroad.net/catalog/images/dvd/lan_yu_n.jpg')

    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://img.timeinc.net/time/asia/magazine/2001/1210/lan_yu.jpg')

    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/strand_releasing/lan_yu/_group_photos/hu_jun1.jpg')

    Lan Yu reminds me of Love story, from the way telling story to the song in the end. It can become Love story of gays, when people admit homosexual in the future. In fact it mentions public opinions very little. Even when Handong leaf Lan Yu to got married, probably just because it's his decision, his choice, not bacause of bearing pressure from people around him. Film makes the story become a bit too romantic--> a bit unbelievable.

    The novel is sader and more mournful, particularly the ending. In the discussion board where the story was post, I've read many responses of readers that they can't stop crying when they know the ending. How poor Handong is. Pity him so much.

    Mature Lan Yu, he keeps the sadness for his own.

    I like this scene. Don't know why it was never shown in the film itself. The film just shows the close-up of the Lan Yu's and Handong's faces and Handong's arms, but not the whole scene in 1 screen.

    I like how tightly Handong embraces Lan Yu. Shows how precious Lan Yu is to him at that moment. I believe this scene can make Handong seeing Lan Yu for the first time after the tiananmen massacre even more effective.

    Yeah. The ending is very sad. Finally, Handong is able to commit fully to Lan Yu, and this ending comes.

    Anyway, what version did u watch? Does your version has this scene?

    the novel absolutely fantastic.... althou alittle too indepth, still not bad a story...

    the ending too sad... but really captive all my attention into reading...

    except tat i went hmv & realised that lanyu (dvd/vcd) was actually banned in s'pore coz of the topic.... kinda sad tat i actually missed the show when it was airing in s'pore..... kinda of stunned me when i heard wat the sales person told me... the authories allows the show to be aired but banned the dvd/vcd...

    i'll find my way to watch the show.... at least once (but i was tinking at least let me find the dvd/vcd & keep).. for once i actually want to find it so much...
