The Academy voters tend to include a film that does very well at the box office in the list of nominees for Best Picture. It's a trend from the past.

That's why I put in King Kong. A very strong alternate would be Walk the Line now that it won 3 major Golden Globe Awards.

    Memoirs of a Geisha

    - Best Picture? I don't think it has a shot. It wasn't very well received by the critics. The movie was enjoyable but not great (7.5 out of 10). It would be an extreme longshot.

    - Best Actress? There is a possibility with Ziyi's enchanting pics during the Golden Globe Awards. She was also received nods for Golden Globe and the SAG. That should augur well for her but she has very strong competition from Keira Knightley for the 5th position. For her to win, I would say her chances are almost non-existing.

    - Best Supporting Actress - Only one mention from a critics' award. Although her performance was strong, she was hampered by her command of English. She might get in though.

Naomi Watts for Best Actress? That's a longshot too but she is a good actress.

Sandra Bullock for Crash? Huh? She was just ok and there so many better performances than hers.
