Well, you can thank Swordmaster again for this next project whilst I make the most of the Christmas holidays and spend the cold, wintry evenings working my way through this mini-epic.

Much anticipated and long awaited - hope you enjoy this! (Em's comment after two eps: Promising start to a classic novel adaptation.)

    Story Overview

After leaving the Central Plains to live on a deserted island known as Snake Island, renowned martial master The Revered Duk Lung loses his control over the demons as he practises his art and as he dies, he instructs Gam Sai Wai, his adopted orphan to take a letter and return to the Central Lands to give to the leader of the Mong Shan Sect Lui Sei Leung, Gam Sai Wai holds back his sadness and leaves Snake Island. From the time that Gam Sai Wai arrives at the Central Lands, a great turning point in his life begins…

As he arrives in the Central Plains, because of the ragged clothes he is wearing, Wai is mistaken for being a member of the Beggar’s sect and he becomes dragged by the Beggars Sect into their battles with the Shaolin Monks. Sai Mun Muk Ye is instructed by Emperor Qian Long to break up the unity between the sects of the Martial World, so he sends out assassin Lai Shing Nam to go out and secretly cause rifts between the sects and create the basis of trouble; also, a quest for some great martial arts skills and gain both fame and fortune, Kong Nam arrives at Shaolin; simultaneously, Jan Ying Courier’s precious daughter Lee Sum Mui also arrives on the scene to join in the fun. Just as the two sects are beginning to battle, the naïve Wai shows off his skills and catches the attention of Lui Sei Leung’s student Kuk Chi Wah who has been sent from Mong Shan to be a mediator in the fight, also it causes Kong Nam to vow that he must follow Wai and learn his fighting skills, Mui also sees him as her knight in shining armour, only Nam becomes his greatest enemy as she angers at his disruption to her plans.

The innocent Wai knows not of any taboos between men and women, as he causes much embarrassment to Wah, she also gets to know him better and without knowing it, the two gradually develop feelings for each other…
On the other hand, Nam is dedicated to seeking revenge against Wai, so she plots to get friendly with him and she mixes him up with truths and lies to confuse situations and tricks him into fighting against the good forces, causing great trouble for Wai without him realising, however Nam becomes captivated by Wai’s pure and lovable nature and his bold and trusting heart and she finds herself creating a strange attraction towards him…
Wah finally brings Wai to Mong Shan to see Lui Sei Leung, it turns out that Duk Lung’s letter is one of explanation to his old friend Sei Leung that in their attempt to assassinate the Emperor Yong Zheng, he did not betray his friend for wealth, and also to ask that Sei Leung uses Mong Shan Martial Art’s pure and positive internal energy to help force out the demonic energy which is poisoning Wai. However, this incident causes the passing of Sei Leung, and the trouble which ensues causes the Acting Leader and all the disciples of Mong Shan to believe that it was Wai who killed their master, Wah and Wai cannot explain themselves and very disappointed, they leave. Wai continually comforts her and their feelings grow greatly as they decide to roam the lands together…
When Nam finds out that Wai is in love with Wah and cannot bear that there are three parties in this relationship, so along the way, she continually harasses and causes problems for Wah.

Wai and the others arrive at Volcano Island to try and find a Martial Arts Manual and on the way, Nam’s jealousy often causes arguments with Wah, stuck between the two women, Wai is very frustrated…
Meanwhile, an avid seeker of Martial Arts Manuals, Meng Shen Tung and his band have followed them to the island and as they alight the boat, they immediately seek the whereabouts of Wai and his companions. Wai is suspicious at Nam’s detailed knowledge of the island and on one occasion, she successfully drives away Wah, when suddenly Wai is ambushed by a strange man, not only is the attacker a skilled martial artist, what is more surprising is that he uses Sau Lor Yam Sat Gung and that Nam kneels to him abruptly and calls him “Uncle”, Wai realises that the reason she knows the island so well is that she has a map which has been passed on by her family. On the other hand, Wah meets with Meng on the island and with her inferior fighting skills, she is captured, Wai loses control of his spirit in an attempt to rescue the two girls and allows Meng to snatch half of the manual and take away Wah, escaping in his boat.

When Wai and Nam arrive back in the Central Plains, they find out that the Martial World has met with a great crisis, as Meng has completed his demonic martial arts and started his evil scheme to take over the whole of the Martial world by challenging each of the great sects and clans to a great fight at Mong Shan, Wah realises that Meng will not give up his slaughter for her, so she can only hope that she can escape from the Meng Family Mansion. The warriors of the good sects are no match for Meng, but Wai and Nam appear to save them from their fate, they are all surprised to see that Wai is still alive, but although Wai and Nam work together to fight back Meng, Sai Mun Muk Ye suddenly arrives with nearly twenty yellow-robed masters from Tibet to fight against the Martial World, this act knocks all the sects and clans into dispersed sands with many killed and injured, whilst all the leaders are captured, in the end only Wai and Nam are lucky to escape just in time with their lives.

In fact, Muk Ye and Meng had earlier agreed to use Meng’s power to defeat the sects, but Meng’s arrogance caused him to want the credit from Qian Long for this to himself and requests that the Emperor makes him the Chief Advisor of the Court, Muk Ye is not impressed at this insubordination and the the two fall out and a battle develops between their troops, with Wai and Nam hidden amongst the army, waiting for their chance to rescue the sect leaders and fight the final battle to the death with Muk Ye and Meng.

Episode Two - Chi Wah mediates between the sects

Nam sees that Wai drinks up with much delight the snake-insect-rat-ant soup that she has cooked up and curiously tries some for herself, finally gaining a taste of her own medicine. Chun Ying Couriers suspect that they have a consignment which has been stolen by Mong Shan and Chief Guard Lee Ying and his wife Fung Lam take advantage of the discussions at the Meng House to go up and chase this with Mong Shan. Nam and Wai meet with a group of people from the Beggars Sect in the rundown temple who are on their way to the talks at the Meng Mansion to gain revenge for the wounding of their elder by Shaolin’s Golden Finger Moves, Nam decides to join in with them in disguise.
Lee Ying has an only daughter called Sum Mui who disguises herself and secretly goes along with her Martial Brother Leung Leung Hong to the Meng Mansion to join the fun, on the way she hears Kong mocking the Courier Troupe and she goes forward to challenge him, however Kong finds out that she is a girl and embarrasses her in public, she cannot bear the shame and angrily chases after him, threatening to kill him. As Kong runs for his life, he finds himself in the room where the Acting Leader of the Mong Shan Sect Tso Kam Yee is getting changed and is accused of being perverted and once again he is being chased for his life, as he runs out of places to run, he is reunited with his three Monk Martial Uncles and is very relieved.

The members of the Beggars Sect find that they are suddenly struck with stomach upsets and the Sect Leader Yik Chung Mou is worries that they will waste time and agrees to go ahead with the elders, Nam plays the hero and offers to carry the sick along the way. Kam Yee likes to show her power and many at the Meng Mansion show their displeasure at this. Kam Yee reveals Sum Mui and Leung Hong’s disguised entry and Lee Ying is greatly ashamed. Fung Lam and Kam Yee do not see eye to eye and start fighting with each other, at this time, Yee sees Kong and turns to kill him, Wai appears and saves him, fighting against Yee until the owner of the Mansion Meng Shen Tung appears and calms everything down.

When Mo Sau inspects the Beggar Elder’s wounds, he is poisoned and the misunderstanding between the sects are deepened, at this time Sei Leung’s personal disciple Kuk Chi Wah appears at the instruction of her Master with some evidence which indicates that there is someone who is deliberately stirring up trouble between the groups. Everyone finds that Nam has suddenly disappeared and question Wai about her, but she returns to take him away with her. Wai scolds Nam for making him bear the accusations of the others, this angers Nam and she leaves.

Swordmaster - I will do the character summaries at the weekend when I have a bit more time on my hands....

Episode Three - Kam Yee is jealous of Chi Wah

Meng points out that the moves which Wai is using is that of Duk Lung and is suspicious of his identity. Kong is thrown out of Shaolin for breaking the rules, but he is pleased by this and vows to make Wai his new master. Yee meets Kong and pulls her sword with the intention on killing, but afraid this will ignite new misunderstandings with Shaolin, Chi Wah stops her. Yee is influenced by another martial sister Kam Hung and her jealousy at Wah turns to hatred. Wai wants to find out about Sei Leung from Wah and seeing that she has been bitten by a snake, he offers a helping hand, Wah builds some good feelings towards Wai and tells him of where Sei Leung lives.

When they arrive at the inn, the Mong Shan party find that Sei Leung has already left, when Yee finds that the letter Sei Leung has left does not refer to her in any way, she is not happy. Wai mistakes Wah for Sei Leung herself and Wah plays along with this and when Wai tells of his story, Wah is very touched and sympathetic. Nam is sent to investigate the reason why Sei Leung has called her students back to Mong Shan and on the way, she meets Wai and Wah, Nam is suspicious at Wah’s identity so she plots to make Wah look a fool in front of Wai. Wah is very embarrassed when Wai catches sight of her bathing and hurriedly returns to Mong Shan, leaving a note.

Even before he has formally admitted Wai as his master, Kong goes around announcing that he is Wai’s student, Tian Shan Sect’s eldest pupil Chung Chin is not pleased at this and stands forward to challenge him, but he gets his clothes dirty and calls out about this. Chin is Mui’s cousin and her parents want to arrange for her to marry him, but Mui cannot stand Chin’s arrogance and showiness and drags Hong with her to run away. Nam says that Wai with his strange clothing will be disrespectful to Sei Leung when he sees her and offers to make him some new clothes. Mui and Hong wander around aimlessly and use up all of their money, they meet with Kong in a restaurant and Mui mocks him for pretending to be upper class whilst only eating simple noodles, Kong does not stand for this and orders some expensive foods, not to be outdone Mui does the same whilst Hong silently suffers.

Episode Four - Sei Leung uses the last of her energy for the sake of Wai

Gei Hiu Fung and Yeung Chek Fu are sent from the Meng Mansion by Meng to go to Mong Shan, Chek Fu is a womaniser and Mui catches his eye in the restaurant, he finds out that she has used all her money and twice steps forward to help her out of a situation. Fu makes Hong very drunk and later he finds out from Kong that Mui has been taken away by Fu and he is horrified, luckily he meets with Wai and Nam on the way and the four go on their way to rescue Mui. Under the influence of Fu’s drugs, Mui screams out loud all through the night and makes it hard to bear for all.

Kong insists on making Wai his master and Wai is helpless. In order to maintain Mui’s reputation, he tells everyone to keep her drugging a secret, however Mui still realises her shameful behaviour in the end. Wah returns to Mong Shan and Yee arranges for her to stay in a very simple guest room. Mui starts to fall in love with Wai and tries to catch his attention on their way, Kong also does his best to gain favour, much to the annoyance of Nam who decides to re-use her old trick and cook up some insect and reptile broth for them all to try and get rid of them.

Wai goes up to Mong Shan to find Sei Leung but is refused entry by Yee, luckily Wah appears and takes them to see Sei Leung.

Sei Leung scolds Yee for being so impulsive and tells the story of how Duk Lung was misunderstood eighteen years ago by his peers, she also makes Yee treat Nam with hospitality whilst she takes Wah and Wai into the inner chamber, Yee resents this. Sei Leung checks Wai’s pulse and tests his inner energy before deciding to use her pure energy to help him with the problems caused by the opposing energy from his martial arts, however she uses all her power but can only help to hold back the opposing force and she urges him not to continue practising this martial art. Sei Leung already knows that her time is up and she does not hold back at using her remaining energies to cure Wai, when Wah sees Sei Leung spitting blood, she is devastated and as she dies, Sei Leung hands over the Yuan Lui Sword and the leader’s role to Chi Wah, urging her to continue practicing the Siu Yeung Martial Arts and internal chants.

Yeah, Michele's character will die in the end. But sad series always made a better impact on me than the series with a happy ending.
