Default Wu Lin Wai Zhuan / 武林外传

Didn't see a thread about this. It's a long (80 episodes!) comedy series set in an ancient-time inn that pokes fun at wuxia conventions and parodies all sorts of cultural/social trends, in the vein of something like Stephen Chow movies. The ensemble cast seems to be relative newcomers, at least there's no one I recognize. I think it just finished airing in China. Easily found on BT.

THere's a 2006 series out, right? I saw it but don't recognized any of the actors.

Isn't Huang Haibing and Ning Jing in the older version. I haven't watched it, but this is what I heard from Lady Zhuge and others in the Huang Haibing thread.

No, you're mistaken. The series starring Huang Hai Bing and Rebecca Wang Yan (not Ning Jing) is called Wu Lin Wai Shi. This series is called Wu Lin Wai Zhuan. Huang Hai Bing's series with Ning Jing is called Ying Xiong.

Oh, I am watching this one ... it's very funny. Low budget but creative, it's a parody of wuxia.

Oh, thanks Lady Zhuge for the clarification. I must get my hands on all three shows. I love Huang Haibing. He's very pretty, almost in a feminine way, yet he possess machoism in a very gentle and appealing way.

I think I'd go to shop around for more series later. I just love buying them. They're such enjoyment to the human soul.

I watched two episodes of Gong Qin Wang starring Chen Bao Guo. It's very well-filmed and quite historical.

Suprised there aren't most posts about this series. I think it's absolutely fabulous. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a comedy, mostly because they're usually all stupidity and no intelligence. I thought this was going to be stupid too, but after I caught several eps on tv, I realized the dialogue is actually pretty complicated, even though it's also amazingly silly at the same time. There're a lot of really fast puns and hilarious references that make it more work to enjoy than most, because you actually have to pay attention to catch everything that's packed in each ep.

I'm not very far into it, only up to the 20ies, but I plan on watching all 80 eps. Anyone finish it yet and want to share if the ending was good? Or at least not too disappointing to go through 80 eps for?

There're lots of fan videos made for this series; thought I'd share some that people might find interesting. Check them out if you want an idea of what the series is like. It seems Wu Lin Wai Zhuan's also available for online viewing. It's great fun.

Share your thoughts on this series or what Wu Lin Wai Zhuan videos you like... One thing I love about this series is all the regional dialects; usually you don't get to hear such a variety with the dubbing people do all the time. It's a refreshing (sometimes challenging) change.

Being a comedy this probably doesn't translate well outside of Chinese-speaking areas.

And what happened to that so-called 40 Ep tv cap that was supposed to have caused ZJZ to sheet his ROCH06 to hell?

This series isn't a big-budget, flying-wires kind of thing and doesn't depend on eye-candy to be effective. The dialogue and the 小品/相声-style of the plots make it addictive.

It's a simple story about the average person's jiang hu; thus the setting is humble and the people are of average appearance (some are actually quite nice-looking, ex: Guo Fu Rong's handmaiden and the innkeeper from across the street).

As to the actors and actresses being bad...I respectfully disagree. If they're bad at acting, the series wouldn't be funny anymore; it'd be just be plain lame. Not just anyone can pull off this kind of dialogue as smoothly as they do.

Thanks very much for the interview link, mermaidmelody33!

I've never thought that I'd actually be watching a show like this...and grow attracted to it. Seriously, this is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Of course, a good understanding of the Chinese language is pretty much necessary here, as the different dialects and the interlocking between classical Chinese with modern Chinese words is what in essence, make the series fun to watch.
