    Default Clay Aiken

The current season of American Idol saw Simon walking out of the auditions after Paula mentioned something about Clay Aiken. It appeared that Clay is the-one-who-must-not-be-named where Simon is concerned. Why? What happened between them? I'm afraid I didn't pay much attention to the seasons before the one with Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood.

I've missed most of the seasons between the first and the most recent one, but I think Simon didn't approve of Clay's voice at the beginning when the three judges either say "yes" or "no" (two "yeses" get you to Hollywood) and yet Clay ended up being the runner-up after all the fans voted. That's kind of an insult to Simon's initial judgment if you know what I mean.

no, that's not what happened at all. paula wasn't even a judge when they first met clay. paula wasn't there for some reason and only randy and simon were judging that day. when they first met clay, simon thought he looked like a dork and expected him to sing horrible. but then clay sang and blew both simon and randy away. so simon commented that clay looks like a pen salesman, but has a great voice. and both simon and randy passed him. that's why paula and randy mention clay to simon whenever there's a dorky person trying out. it's to remind him to not judge someone without hearing him sing first. and he doesn't like to be reminded about that, i guess.

I see. Thanks, Pemberly and Lady Zhuge.

By the way, Simon also made the "pen salesman" comment to Jon Peter Lewis of the season in which Fantasia was the winner, didn't he? I remember Jon Peter Lewis saying something along the lines of him being able to sell more than pens, which elicited a guffaw out of an amused Simon.

And that's why I shouldn't make stuff up or assume anything when I didn't actually watch that particular season. Thanks for the real answer.
