Yeah, it's funny how differently people can see the same thing.

Well, DY was supposed to have a delicate scholarly look. Stephen doesn't look scholarly and delicate and is too old now to play a 20 yr old anyway. Jimmy Lin actually made a rather good DY. At least I found him just as annoying on screen as in the novel.

Xu Zhu is supposed to have a plain look. That Musa guy looks too good.

Who choose Austin Wai Tin Chi? Care to give some opinion?

IMO, Leung Kar Yan conveys the heroic qualities of Xiao Feng better. In DGSD 2004, people smile too much (as an example, JMZ was supposed to be crying at Celestial Dragon Temple, but he smiled in the series the whole time!), and the dialogue delivery is too relaxed/laid back for my taste--it feels like the actors don't take their role very seriously. The cool ancient mood that complements Jin Yong's great text is missing for me.

I must say, the foundation of DGSD 1982's memorable scenes is the fine music, which is one of the weaknesses of DGSD 2004.

In a somewhat related note, Leung Ka Yan actually has an anglicized name: he's known in martial arts acting circles as Bryan Leung.

Great. Now I've got an image stuck in my head of the 80s Kiu Fung and 80s ROCH Gwok Jing being called "Bryan."

Actually, I think he is known as Bryan only to extremely young crowds. The veteran kung fu fans all refer to him as Leung Kar Yan or Beardy In my 7 years of online film discussion, I don't recall anyone in the West calling him Bryan.

Well, that's not too uncommon? Yang Guo is acted by Andy and Louis. Wei Xiaobao is acted by Tony and Jordan. Shi Potian is acted by Max and Tony. Duan Yu is acted by Ken and Benny.... you get the message.

haha, yeah. But that guy's specialty is really his evil smile (and his extra-large cheek muscles, which are probably the result of doing that smile so much ) I really like that guy, but I think that out of all the characters he played for Zhang Zhi Jong, the one he has the best look for is Jebeh.

..and apparently him and sammo used to be next-door neighbours, and the thing they loved the most was playing soccer together in the park

Lol, that is the exact impression I got from the series.
Hu Jun (the guy who played XF) had a whole aura of arrogance about him. The dub for his voice was annoying at the same time.

Does anyone know, if the actor who played Jiumozhi in DGSD 2004, is the same actor who played Huogong Toutuo in the movie KUNG FU CULT MASTER which starred Jet Li as Zhang Wuji?

hmm, I don't remember that actor, you wouldnt happen to have a screen cap of him would you? But I think he's from the mainland, I doubt he would have been in a HK film in 93. Actually do you know who this guy reminds me of? Hwang Jang Lee. They have a similar face, and are both bad *** villains.

He also played Ling Hu Chong. I've only seen Liang Jia Reng and Hu Jun's adoptations, and I do agree that if Liang Jia Reng is a bit taller and bulkier, he would be the best Xia Feng.

Unfortunately i found most Kiu Feng actors not muscular enough

Kiu Feng seems to be way more muscular, tough and babaric

To protray XF correctly, we'll need an Oriental clone of Russell Crowe.

His acting in Gladiator is exactly how I see XF in DGSD.

In my opinion, only felix wong exludes the bearing of a hero
His potrait of XF was way better than the 2004 production. Maybe it's partly due to his better acting skills.

    Felix Wong.

His Qiao Feng surpasses all of them. His acting of a Da Xia is way better than Liang Jia Ren and Hu Jun.

Liang Jia Ren is a little bit more mellow.

    Hu Jun is just barbaric.

Felix just has a Da Xia Aura around him when he is QF. He just seems more heroic and manly.

    QF

I think LJR's face looks more like how I imagine QF would look like. (He looks kinda sissy in that pic attached to this thread... but I've seen other screen caps where he looks more the part)

I've only seen DGSD04 due to my TVB aversion, but I think HJ was pretty good. His face doesn't look like someone who would stand out as a da xia, and he's not that muscular from I could tell. The voice dub is great though. His acting is decent too. I didn't get the aura and presence of a QF from him however.

I think Felix's acting is definitely superior to all the other candidates. However, like a lot of you have already mentioned, he doesn't have the Qiu Fung build. Thus, maybe that's part of the reason he keeps wearing bulky clothes in the series. Leung Ka Yan makes a good Qiu Fung, however his acting was rather raw in the 82 series.

Then there was this part where he opens his shirt to show his chest and the wolf head tatoo! WEAK!

His acting was great though. The pain XF felt could be felt.

Rather have good acting than someone that looks good for the role but is shite.
    E.g. LYF.

That was always a scene I thought was hilarious. I don't know if there are a lot of Asian actors that have the size and look of Qiu Fung. Peter Ho has the size, but has a rather baby face. Maybe Ben Ng Ngai Cheung?
